A long volcanic spine of an island in Indonesia's Lesser Sundas chain east of Bali, anchored by the harbour town of Labuan Bajo where every Komodo National Park live-aboard and day boat departs. Inland, the 1,639-metre Kelimutu volcano holds three crater lakes that shift colour independently โ turquoise, olive, black โ and the cool highland villages of Bena and Wae Rebo preserve thatched conical houses and Ngada megalithic ancestor stones. Days run from dawn dragon walks on Rinca to swim stops at Pink Beach, manta cleaning stations at Manta Point, and the 5km drone-friendly ridge of Padar Island. Christian-majority and overwhelmingly local in feel.

Flores is a 360-km long volcanic island east of Bali in Indonesia's Lesser Sunda chain โ Christian-majority (about 90% Catholic, the legacy of 16th-century Portuguese missionaries) in a country that is 87% Muslim. The island's name comes from the Portuguese "Cabo das Flores" (Cape of Flowers)
Labuan Bajo, on the western tip, is the only practical gateway to Komodo National Park โ every dive boat, day-tour bangka and live-aboard departs from its harbour. The town has exploded from 5,000 to over 20,000 people in the last decade as tourism took off
The 1,639-metre Kelimutu volcano holds three crater lakes that change colour independently โ usually turquoise, olive-green and black, but each can shift to red, brown or blue between visits. Local Lio belief is that they hold the souls of the dead by age and morality
The Komodo dragon (Varanus komodoensis) survives in the wild only on five islands clustered around Flores โ Komodo, Rinca, Padar, Gili Motang and Nusa Kode โ with about 3,000 dragons spread across the 1,733 sq km Komodo National Park (UNESCO World Heritage since 1991)
The Trans-Flores highway from Labuan Bajo to Maumere runs about 670 km but takes 2-3 days of driving on tight, switchbacking road โ most travellers either fly the Labuan BajoโEndeโMaumere hop on Wings Air or do a 5-day overland trip with stops at Bena and Ruteng
Wae Rebo, a remote Manggarai village 1,200 m up in the hills above Ruteng, is reached only by a 3-4 hour hike from Denge โ its seven conical thatched mbaru niang houses won a UNESCO Asia-Pacific Heritage Award in 2012 and travellers stay overnight as guests of the chief
Top Sights
Komodo & Rinca Islands (dragon walks)
๐ณGuided 1-2 hour ranger walks through dry savanna spotting the world's largest lizard โ adult males reach 3 m and 90 kg and have venomous saliva. Rinca is the easier and more reliable sighting island; Komodo itself adds Pink Beach and Loh Liang ranger station. Park entry IDR 150,000-300,000 plus ranger fees IDR 80,000.
Padar Island viewpoint
๐The most-photographed view in Indonesia โ a 30-minute hike up a ridge spine reveals three crescent bays (white, black and pink sand) framing turquoise water from a 200-m saddle. Boats anchor at the eastern jetty; arrive by 06:00 sunrise to avoid both the heat and the day-tour crowds.
Manta Point & Pink Beach
๐๏ธThe shallow channel between Komodo and Padar is a major manta cleaning station โ schools of 5-15 reef mantas glide through year-round, peaking December-February. Pink Beach owes its colour to crushed red foram coral mixed with white sand. Most island-hopping day boats from Labuan Bajo include both stops in a 7-stop loop for IDR 750,000-1,200,000 per person.
Kelimutu three-coloured lakes
๐A pre-dawn 30-minute climb from the trailhead car park (1,500 m) reaches a viewpoint over three crater lakes set within walking distance of one another, each a different colour due to dissolved minerals reacting with volcanic gases. Reach: 1.5 hours by car from Moni village. Park entry IDR 150,000.
Wae Rebo village (overnight)
๐A ridge-top Manggarai village of seven conical thatched mbaru niang houses, reached only by a 3-4 hour hike from Denge through cloud forest. Travellers stay overnight as guests of the chief, eat a communal breakfast of arabica from the village plot, and contribute IDR 350,000 per person to the community fund.
Bena & Tololela Ngada villages
๐A cluster of pre-Christian Ngada villages south of Bajawa with megalithic ancestor stones, thatched bhaga shrines and ngadhu sacrificial posts. Bena is the largest and most visited; Tololela and Luba a 30-minute walk away are quieter. Entry IDR 25,000 plus a kain ikat purchase from one of the women weaving on the porches.
Cunca Wulang waterfall
๐A sloped gorge canyon 30 km from Labuan Bajo where a series of rock pools lead to a 25-metre waterfall โ half day trip, IDR 250,000 with guide, includes the cliff jump (10 m) and an 800-metre walk through the cocoa and cashew forest. Best done after the November-March rains when the falls are full.
Liang Bua hominid cave
๐The cave outside Ruteng where the 18,000-year-old skeleton of Homo floresiensis (the "Hobbit", a metre-tall extinct human species) was discovered in 2003. Small site museum on the path; the cave itself is a 50-m gallery still being excavated. Entry IDR 50,000.
Off the Beaten Path
Mediterraneo (Labuan Bajo waterfront)
A long-running Italian-Indonesian restaurant on the Labuan Bajo waterfront strip โ wood-fired thin-crust pizza, fresh tuna carpaccio, the best wine list in town. The upper deck has the harbour-sunset view.
After 4 days of ship-galley spaghetti and rice dinners on a Komodo live-aboard, this is what every dive boat captain books their guests into for the welcome-back meal.
Mama Maria warung (Moni)
A roadside warung in Moni village run by a Lio matriarch โ single-pot daily menu of jagung bose (corn-and-bean stew), babi tunu (slow-grilled pork) and ikan kuah asam tomato-tamarind fish soup. IDR 35,000 a plate.
The Lio cooking that disappears the moment you leave the Kelimutu road โ outside the village no restaurant serves it. Eat a long late lunch after the Kelimutu sunrise on the way back to your homestay.
Cancar Spider-Web Rice Fields
A 20-minute drive from Ruteng, Cancar village divides its rice paddies into wedge-shaped lingko plots radiating from a central temple stone โ viewed from the hillside they form perfect spider-web circles. Local kids guide you up the path for IDR 20,000.
Most Trans-Flores travellers blow through Ruteng without stopping. The 30-minute detour produces the photo Lonely Planet ran in their 2023 cover.
Bajawa Bena coffee co-op
A small farmers' co-operative in Bena village selling Flores arabica grown on the volcanic slopes of Inerie โ single-origin, washed process, packed in 250 g bags labelled with the farmer's name. IDR 90,000 per bag, half what it costs in Bali.
Flores arabica is gradually appearing on third-wave menus from Melbourne to Brooklyn but at the source you buy it from the man who grew it.
Climate & Best Time to Go
Flores has a tropical monsoon climate with two pronounced seasons โ dry from April to October and wet from November to March. Coastal Labuan Bajo is hot and humid year-round (28-32ยฐC); the Bajawa, Ruteng and Moni highlands run 5-8ยฐC cooler and can drop to 12ยฐC overnight in July-August. The Komodo region is among Indonesia's driest, in the rain shadow of the Lesser Sunda chain.

Safety Breakdown
Moderate
out of 100
Flores is one of the safer parts of Indonesia for visitors โ low petty crime, almost no scams, predominantly Catholic and very local in feel. Real risks are road crashes on the Trans-Flores highway, dragon encounters when hiking off-trail in Komodo NP, and live-aboard boat fires (multiple incidents 2018-2023). Wear a helmet on any scooter and only book live-aboards with verifiable safety records.
Things to Know
- โขKomodo dragons are wild predators โ never separate from your ranger group, never sit down on the ground, and report any cuts or menstrual bleeding to the ranger before walking (they track blood scent at 5 km)
- โขLive-aboard boat fires have killed several tourists in Komodo waters since 2018 โ book only operators with smoke detectors, life rafts and a recent KSOP safety certificate visible at the dive shop
- โขThe Trans-Flores highway is narrow, switchbacking and full of overtaking trucks โ hire a driver rather than self-driving and travel only in daylight
- โขMosquitoes carry dengue and (less commonly) malaria in eastern Flores โ sleep under a net at non-aircon homestays and use DEET evening through dawn
- โขBring small denomination IDR cash for the highlands โ ATMs exist in Labuan Bajo, Ruteng, Bajawa and Maumere but smaller villages take cash only
- โขSea swells can build fast in the Komodo channels โ only swim and snorkel when your boat captain confirms the current is safe; the Sembulan and Lintah straits move at 4-6 knots

๐ก Money-Saving Tips
- โขBook Komodo day-tour boats directly at the Labuan Bajo harbour the night before โ IDR 750,000 instead of IDR 1,500,000+ through hotel concierge
- โขTake the Wings Air island hops (LBJ-ENE-MOF, ~IDR 700,000 each leg) instead of a private Trans-Flores driver for solo travellers
- โขEat dinner at the night market on Jl Kasimo in Labuan Bajo โ fresh-grilled fish for IDR 70,000 vs IDR 200,000 on the waterfront
- โขRent dive gear in Bali rather than Labuan Bajo for IDR 150,000/day savings on a multi-day trip
- โขStay in Moni village rather than Ende โ homestays IDR 200,000 vs hotels IDR 600,000 and you cut the Kelimutu dawn drive by 90 minutes
- โขBuy ikat textiles in the village (Bena, Tololela) rather than the Labuan Bajo waterfront โ same cloth at 30-50% of the price
- โขBring your own snorkel mask โ saves IDR 50,000/day rental on every Komodo day boat
Indonesian Rupiah
Code: IDR
1 USD is approximately 15,300 IDR (early 2026). ATMs are widespread in Labuan Bajo, Ruteng, Bajawa, Ende and Maumere โ daily withdrawal limits are typically IDR 2,000,000-3,000,000. Carry small denominations (IDR 5,000-50,000) for the highland villages where IDR 100,000 notes are hard to break. Money changers in Labuan Bajo offer better rates than the airport.
Payment Methods
Cash dominates outside of Labuan Bajo. Mid-range and luxury hotels in Labuan Bajo and Bajawa accept Visa and Mastercard with a 2-3% surcharge. Live-aboard operators usually require 50% deposit by bank transfer and the balance in cash on the first day. Outside Labuan Bajo plan to pay everything (homestays, drivers, food) in IDR cash.
Tipping Guide
IDR 100,000-200,000 per person per day (~$6.50-13), pooled, given to the cruise director on the last evening. Standard practice on every Komodo live-aboard.
IDR 50,000-100,000 per dive (~$3.25-6.50) for good guides who spotted creatures and watched the group carefully.
No service charge in local warungs; round up the bill to the nearest IDR 10,000. Mid-range Labuan Bajo restaurants add 10% service plus 11% tax โ additional tip not expected.
IDR 50,000-100,000 (~$3.25-6.50) for the ranger who walked your group on Rinca or Komodo โ they earn modestly and rely on tips.
IDR 100,000-200,000 (~$6.50-13) per day for a Trans-Flores driver. More if they doubled as guide and English interpreter.
IDR 20,000-50,000/day (~$1.30-3.25) at mid-range and upscale resorts; not expected at homestays.
How to Get There
โ๏ธ Airports
Komodo Airport (Labuan Bajo)(LBJ)
2 km east of Labuan Bajo townAirport taxi IDR 80,000-120,000 (~$5-8) to most hotels. Grab pickups from designated area outside arrivals. Many hotels include a free shuttle if booked 48 hours ahead.
โ๏ธ Search flights to LBJH. Hasan Aroeboesman Airport (Ende)(ENE)
2 km east of Ende townBemo (shared minivan) IDR 15,000 to town centre, taxi IDR 60,000-80,000. Most travellers continue 1.5 hours by car to Moni for the Kelimutu sunrise.
โ๏ธ Search flights to ENEFrans Seda Airport (Maumere)(MOF)
3 km east of Maumere townAirport taxi IDR 70,000-100,000 to most central hotels. Maumere is the eastern terminus of the Trans-Flores highway; many overland travellers fly out from here back to Bali or Jakarta.
โ๏ธ Search flights to MOFGetting Around
Flores has no trains and very limited public buses โ getting around the island means either hiring a driver-and-car for the Trans-Flores highway, renting a scooter for Labuan Bajo and short hops, or flying the Wings Air island hops. In Labuan Bajo and Maumere, Grab and Gojek work but coverage drops to zero in the highland villages.
Grab / Gojek
IDR 10,000-50,000 (~$0.65-3.25) for in-town tripsBoth ride-hailing apps work in Labuan Bajo and Maumere only. Cars and motorbike taxis are cheap and metered through the app โ useful for airport runs and around town. Unavailable outside the two airport hubs.
Best for: Airport-to-hotel transfers in Labuan Bajo and Maumere, late-night returns from waterfront restaurants
Scooter Rental
IDR 80,000-120,000/day (~$5-8)Automatic 110-125cc scooters available from any guesthouse in Labuan Bajo, Bajawa and Moni. Good for short-day trips (Cunca Wulang, Bena village) but exhausting for long Trans-Flores stretches. Always wear a helmet โ police roadblocks check.
Best for: Day trips around Labuan Bajo, Moni-Kelimutu road, Bajawa-Bena loop
Hired Car & Driver (Trans-Flores)
IDR 5,500,000-8,000,000 for 5 days inc fuel (~$360-525) for car + driverThe standard way to do the Trans-Flores trip โ a 5-day private car with English-speaking driver-guide for Labuan Bajo to Maumere with stops at Ruteng, Bajawa, Moni and Maumere. Operators: Florescom, Komodo Tours, Bajo Mighty.
Best for: Trans-Flores overland trips, family or couple travel, anyone who wants the comfort of door-to-door pickup
Travel (Shared Minibus)
IDR 80,000-200,000 (~$5-13) per legLocal minivans called "travel" run between major Flores towns โ Labuan Bajo to Ruteng (4 hr, IDR 150,000), Ruteng to Bajawa (4 hr, IDR 130,000). Cramped, frequent stops, no aircon. Book through your guesthouse the day before.
Best for: Budget travellers, those who want to mix with locals, single travellers without a partner to split a private car
Walkability
Labuan Bajo town is a 10-minute walk end to end along the waterfront strip โ most dive shops, restaurants and guesthouses cluster on Jl Soekarno-Hatta. Moni village is a single 500-metre street. Outside these compact centres, walking is impractical due to distances and the lack of footpaths on highway shoulders.
Travel Connections
Entry Requirements
Indonesia offers Visa on Arrival (VOA) to citizens of most Western countries valid for 30 days and extendable once for another 30 days. The VOA costs IDR 500,000 (~$33) at the airport. The e-VOA is recommended (apply at molina.imigrasi.go.id before travel) to skip the airport queue. Indonesia's Bali tourist tax of IDR 150,000 does not apply to Flores arrivals.
Entry Requirements by Nationality
| Nationality | Visa Required | Max Stay | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| US Citizens | Visa-free | 30 days (VOA, extendable to 60) | IDR 500,000 fee. Passport must be valid 6+ months with 2 blank pages. |
| UK Citizens | Visa-free | 30 days (VOA, extendable to 60) | Same VOA terms; e-VOA recommended. |
| Australian Citizens | Visa-free | 30 days (VOA, extendable to 60) | Heavy Australian tourism to Flores; e-VOA strongly recommended for July-August arrivals. |

Visa-Free Entry
Visa on Arrival
Tips
- โขApply for the e-VOA online before travel โ saves 30-60 minutes at Labuan Bajo arrivals queue, especially on Bali-LBJ flight days
- โขKomodo NP entry tickets are bought separately from your boat tour โ keep the receipt as rangers check it on Rinca and Loh Liang
- โขCarry a digital copy of your passport on phone โ useful when checking into homestays in the highland villages where they require ID for the guest book
- โขCash IDR is essential outside Labuan Bajo โ change USD or EUR at the Labuan Bajo waterfront money changers (better rates than the airport) before heading inland
- โขIf extending the VOA, allow 5 working days at the Labuan Bajo immigration office (Jl Yos Sudarso) and bring your hotel bill as proof of address
Shopping
Flores is famous for ikat โ handwoven textiles dyed in indigo, morinda red and yellow turmeric using designs that vary village by village.
