Batumi
Georgia's subtropical Black Sea city is a unique architectural kaleidoscope โ Ottoman, Art Nouveau, Soviet, and contemporary towers sit side by side. The Alphabet Tower rotates in the wind at 130m; the Ali and Nino kinetic sculpture merges and separates every 10 minutes. Visa-free for 95 nationalities for a full year โ Batumi is one of the most accessible destinations in the Caucasus.

Batumi is Georgia's most subtropical city โ the Black Sea coast and the Caucasus Mountains create a microclimate so humid and warm that tea and citrus are grown commercially in what is otherwise a mountain country known for snow
The Alphabet Tower, a 130-metre landmark rising from the seafront, spirals upward through the 33 letters of the Georgian alphabet and contains an exhibition on Georgian writing system โ invented by King Pharnavaz I in the 3rd century BC, one of the oldest in the world
Batumi was part of the Ottoman Empire for 300 years before Russia annexed it in 1878 โ this Ottoman heritage is visible in the Old Town mosques and the multicultural Muslim-Orthodox-Jewish community that has coexisted here since antiquity
The Adjara region surrounding Batumi is home to the Adjarian people โ an ethnically Georgian Muslim community maintaining distinct food traditions (Adjaruli khachapuri โ a boat-shaped cheese bread with an egg, found here in its purest form)
Batumi became a free industrial zone and gambling hub in the 2010s โ when gambling was banned in Tbilisi, casinos relocated to Batumi, and the resulting investment boom produced the extraordinary mix of Soviet, Art Nouveau, Ottoman, and futuristic buildings visible today
The Batumi Botanical Garden, founded in 1912 on a cliff above the Black Sea, contains 2,000 plant species from every humid subtropical climate zone on earth โ arguably the most biodiverse temperate botanical garden in the world given Batumi's unique climate
Top Sights
Old Town (Akhali Ubani)
๐Batumi's historic centre combines Ottoman-era mosques, Tsarist-period Art Nouveau mansions, Soviet-era apartment blocks, and Georgian churches within a few walkable blocks โ a layered architectural history unique in the Caucasus. The central piazza (Piazza Square) was created in 2012 as an Italian-themed tourist zone but has been absorbed into the city's eclectic character.
Batumi Seafront Promenade (Bulvar)
๐ผA 7 km Black Sea promenade โ the city's social spine, with the Ali and Nino sculpture (a Azerbaijani and Georgian lover whose bodies merge and separate as they rotate), the Alphabet Tower, bicycle paths, beach access, and the dramatically eclectic skyline of casinos and towers that emerged after 2012.
Batumi Botanical Garden
๐ฟFounded in 1912 by Andrรฉ Krasnov on a cliff above the Black Sea โ 2,000 plant species from subtropical zones worldwide (Japanese, Mexican, New Zealand, Chinese, Australian, Himalayan, and Caucasian sections) in a 113-hectare cliff-side garden with Black Sea views. The most comprehensive subtropical botanical garden in the former Soviet Union.
Adjaruli Khachapuri at Local Restaurants
๐The original and finest version of Georgia's most celebrated dish โ an open-topped boat of bread dough filled with Adjarian sulguni cheese, topped with a raw egg and knob of butter, served immediately from the wood-fired oven. You break the edges of the bread into the centre, mix the egg into the cheese, and eat the interior first. Available at every restaurant.
Gonio-Apsaros Fortress
๐A 1st-century Roman military fortress 12 km south of Batumi โ one of the best-preserved Roman forts in the Caucasus, with intact towers and a small museum. According to local legend, Medea's father buried the Golden Fleece here. The Argonauts' territory of Colchis (which Jason sought in Greek mythology) was centered in modern-day Adjara.
Makhuntseti Waterfall & Acharistskali River Valley
๐ฟThe Adjara highlands 30 km from Batumi โ a medieval arched bridge (Makhuntseti Bridge, 12th century), a powerful 20m waterfall, and the narrow gorge of the Acharistskali River through a subtropical landscape that transitions from beach to Caucasus forest within an hour's drive.
Off the Beaten Path
Adjaruli Khachapuri at Retro
Batumi's most beloved traditional restaurant for the Adjaruli khachapuri โ wood-fired, cheese freshly made that morning, egg cracked tableside. The restaurant is unglamorous by design; the khachapuri is the entire point. Order a half-bottle of local Adjarian white wine with it.
The Adjaruli khachapuri was born in this city โ every version in the world is derived from what Adjarian grandmothers perfected. The best versions are found in family restaurants without English menus.
Botanical Garden at Sunrise
The Batumi Botanical Garden opens at 9am and the cliff-side paths above the Black Sea are extraordinarily beautiful in early light โ mist in the subtropical canopy, the sea below. The gondola ride down to the beach at the base is operational from April.
The confluence of subtropical jungle, Black Sea vista, and Russian-era pavilions at dawn is one of the most unexpectedly beautiful experiences in the South Caucasus.
Old Town Wine Bar and Churchkhela
Churchkhela โ grape juice-and-walnut sausages hung to dry โ is Georgia's most distinctive sweet, and the Adjarian version (made with local Adjarian grape varieties) is darker and more intense than the Tbilisi versions. Buy them from street vendors in the Old Town and pair with a glass of Adjarian wine at one of the terrace bars.
Adjarian Churchkhela is made with a different grape must from the Tbilisi version โ the local wine culture predates recorded history and the products reflect it.
Evening at Ali and Nino
The 8-metre kinetic steel sculpture of a Georgian woman and Azerbaijani man slowly rotating โ their bodies passing through each other over a 10-minute cycle โ is best seen at dusk when the promenade is at its most social: Georgian families walking, children on bicycles, chacha-sellers at plastic tables.
The sculpture tells a love story that defines the cultural complexity of the South Caucasus โ two different peoples, two different faiths, merging and separating in a cycle that mirrors the region's own history.
