Maui

Maui has a tropical climate with two distinct sides: the leeward (west and south) coasts are sunny and dry nearly year-round, while the windward (north and east) coasts and Hana receive abundant rain from northeast trade winds. Haleakala summit can be cold and windy at any time of year — bring layers. Hurricane season runs June through November but direct hits are rare. Trade winds keep coastal temperatures pleasant even in summer.

Turks and Caicos

TCI has a tropical maritime climate with consistent year-round warmth — average highs 27-31°C, lows 22-26°C. The constant trade winds (15-20 mph from the east-northeast) keep the islands feeling cooler than the temperatures suggest, especially on the windward beaches. Annual rainfall is just 530 mm — among the driest in the Caribbean. Hurricane season runs June-November with peak risk August-October; TCI sits in the northern Caribbean hurricane corridor and has been struck by major hurricanes (most recently Maria 2017, Irma 2017).

Maui

A rental car is essentially mandatory for exploring Maui beyond resort areas. The Road to Hana, Haleakala National Park, Upcountry Maui, and most beaches are inaccessible without one. Book well in advance — rental car availability is limited and prices spike during peak season. Maui Bus provides limited public transit but has significant gaps in coverage.

Walkability: Maui is not a walkable destination by design. Wailea resort area has a paved beachfront path connecting several hotels and beaches. Parts of Kihei along South Kihei Road are pedestrian-friendly. Downtown Lahaina (pre-fire) was walkable within the historic district. Outside these pockets, walking between destinations is impractical — distances are long and sidewalks are sparse.

Turks and Caicos

TCI has limited transport options — taxis (no Uber), rental cars (drive on the LEFT), bicycles (popular along the Grace Bay strip), and inter-island flights or ferries between the inhabited islands. There is NO public bus system on Provo. The Grace Bay resort strip is walkable end-to-end (about 5 km from the Conch Bar at the eastern end to Wymara at the western end); most other movement requires a vehicle.

Walkability: The Grace Bay resort strip is highly walkable — the entire main resort area is on a 5km strip of beach. Beyond Grace Bay, distances require a vehicle. The other islands (North/Middle/Grand Turk) are spread out and require driving.
