San Antonio is the seventh-largest US city (1.5M) and the most Mexican-feeling major city in the United States, anchored by the Alamo and a 3-mile pedestrian River Walk that runs 20 feet below street level through downtown. The five Spanish colonial missions (Mission San Jose plus the Alamo and three others) form a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the King William Historic District holds Victorian mansions, and the Pearl District has turned a 19th-century brewery into the city's best food and shopping zone. Tex-Mex was effectively invented here.

San Antonio is the seventh-largest US city (1.5M city, 2.6M metro) and the most Mexican-feeling major city in the country โ€” roughly 64% Hispanic or Latino, with deep family roots that go back centuries before the city joined the United States

๐Ÿ›๏ธ

The Alamo (Mission San Antonio de Valero) was the site of the famous 1836 battle in the Texas Revolution โ€” the actual building survives in the middle of downtown, smaller and more solemn than most visitors expect

๐Ÿ›ถ

The 3-mile River Walk runs 20 feet below street level along the San Antonio River, lined with restaurants, hotels, and cypress trees โ€” a separate pedestrian world that connects downtown to the Pearl District

โ›ช

Five Spanish colonial missions form the San Antonio Missions National Historical Park, jointly inscribed by UNESCO in 2015 โ€” the Alamo plus Mission Concepcion, San Jose, San Juan, and Espada

๐ŸŒถ๏ธ

Tex-Mex was effectively invented here โ€” chili con carne, fajitas, and the breakfast taco all have San Antonio origin stories. Mi Tierra in Market Square has been open 24 hours since 1941

๐ŸŽ‰

Fiesta is the city's 11-day spring festival in April โ€” over 100 events including the Battle of Flowers parade, NIOSA at La Villita, and crowns of medals worn by everyone

โ˜€๏ธ

San Antonio's climate is hot semi-arid โ€” summers (June-September) reach 100ยฐF+ regularly with less humidity than Houston, and winters are mild

San Antonio Missions (UNESCO)

๐Ÿ“Œ

Mission Concepcion, San Jose ("Queen of the Missions"), San Juan, and Espada โ€” four 18th-century Spanish colonial missions still functioning as Catholic parishes. Free entry. The Mission Trail (8 miles, paved) connects all four; rent a bike at Blue Star.

South side along the Mission ReachBook tours

Pearl District

๐Ÿ“Œ

A former 19th-century brewery turned mixed-use development โ€” restaurants, weekend farmers market, the Hotel Emma, and the CIA (Culinary Institute of America) Texas campus. Easily the best food and shopping zone in the city. Walk from downtown along the River Walk's Museum Reach (1.5 mi).

Pearl / BrackenridgeBook tours

Market Square (El Mercado)

๐Ÿ“Œ

The largest Mexican market in the United States, three blocks west of downtown โ€” handmade goods, Tex-Mex restaurants (Mi Tierra is the anchor since 1941), live mariachi most weekends. Touristy but unmistakably authentic.

Downtown / West SideBook tours

Tower of the Americas

๐Ÿ—ผ

A 750-foot observation tower built for the 1968 World's Fair (HemisFair). Observation deck $20; revolving restaurant at the top. The most complete view of the city, from the Hill Country to the missions to Mexico's ranges on a clear day.

Off the Beaten Path

Mission Reach Bike Ride

The southern 8 miles of the River Walk extension links downtown to all four southern missions on a paved trail. Rent at Blue Star Bike Shop ($25/day); pack water and start by 9am in summer. The least crowded part of the river.

โ˜…

Almost every visitor sees the downtown River Walk loop and stops. The Mission Reach is the same river extended 8 miles south through a restored prairie corridor โ€” quiet, free, and the best way to experience the UNESCO missions.

South Side / Mission Reach

Carnitas Lonja

A roadside taqueria in the South Side with arguably the best carnitas in Texas โ€” slow-cooked Michoacan style, served on hand-pressed tortillas. Cash only, weekend brunch lines run 30+ minutes, $4-6 per taco.

โ˜…

San Antonio is full of Tex-Mex but Mexican food (interior, not Tex-Mex) is harder to find well-executed. Lonja is on every serious Texas food list. 10 minutes from downtown.

South Side

The Esquire Tavern

Texas's oldest bar on the River Walk โ€” opened 1933 the day Prohibition ended, with the longest wood bar in Texas (100 feet). Craft cocktails, riverside seating, no cover.

โ˜…

Most River Walk bars are tourist franchises. The Esquire is the local serious-drinks spot with deep history. Sit at the bar at sunset and watch the river barges pass.

Downtown / River Walk

Mi Tierra at 2am

A 24-hour Tex-Mex restaurant in Market Square open since 1941 โ€” the late-night version is a local rite of passage. Mariachi until well past midnight, a 3am margarita, breakfast tacos at 5am.

โ˜…

Everyone's been to Mi Tierra at lunch. The 2am version is when you understand it โ€” locals after weddings and quinceaneras, mariachi serenading birthdays, full menu without waits.

Market Square

San Fernando Cathedral light show

A free 24-minute video projection ("San Antonio: The Saga") lights up the front of the 1738 cathedral in Main Plaza Tuesday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday at 9, 9:30, and 10pm. Viewable from Main Plaza.

โ˜…

A genuinely impressive free show that tells the city's 300-year history projected on its oldest building. Almost no one in Texas outside San Antonio knows about it.

San Antonio is one of the safer large Texas cities for visitors โ€” downtown, the River Walk, the Pearl, King William, and Alamo Heights all feel comfortable day and evening. Property crime (car break-ins, opportunistic theft) is the biggest concern. The East Side and parts of the West Side beyond Market Square have higher crime but visitors will not naturally pass through them.

Things to Know

  • โ€ขNever leave valuables visible in parked cars โ€” particularly at trailheads, the missions, and downtown garages
  • โ€ขKeep an eye on bags on the River Walk โ€” pickpocketing happens in the densest tourist sections
  • โ€ขEast side neighborhoods east of I-37 and the far west side have higher crime โ€” visitors have no reason to be there at night
  • โ€ขUse rideshare after drinking โ€” VIA bus service drops off after 10pm and the city has aggressive DWI enforcement
  • โ€ขSummer heat is the most underestimated risk โ€” carry water, plan walking during cooler hours
  • โ€ขTexas is open-carry โ€” firearms are legally present but conflicts involving them are rare in tourist areas

Natural Hazards

โš ๏ธ Flash flooding โ€” San Antonio is prone to flash floods on the river; never drive through standing waterโš ๏ธ Extreme summer heat โ€” heat index over 105ยฐF is common from June through Augustโš ๏ธ Severe thunderstorms with hail are possible March-May; tornadoes are rareโš ๏ธ Ice storms (rare but disruptive) can shut down the city for days; the Texas grid is not winterized

US Dollar

Code: USD

The US Dollar is used everywhere. Mexican pesos are not accepted (despite the proximity). Sales tax 8.25% added at the register.

Payment Methods

Credit and debit cards are accepted nearly everywhere. Contactless (Apple Pay, Google Pay) is standard. Cash is helpful at Market Square stalls, food trucks, and a few Mission Trail vendors. Many businesses pass on a 3-4% credit card surcharge.

Tipping Guide

Restaurants (sit-down)

18-22% of pre-tax total is standard. Many receipts now suggest 20/22/25%. Auto-gratuity is added to parties of 6+.

Coffee shops / Quick service

$1-2 or use the 15-20% button on the card reader.
