Koh Phi Phi is six islands in the Andaman Sea between Phuket and Krabi, the most famous of which are Phi Phi Don, the inhabited backpacker hub with no roads and a maze of pedestrian sois, and Phi Phi Leh, the uninhabited limestone fortress whose Maya Bay starred in The Beach. Maya Bay reopened in 2022 with daily caps, mooring bans, and a strict no-swimming-on-the-bay-side rule that lets the coral recover. Ferries take 90 minutes from Phuket or Krabi. Days revolve around longtail island-hopping and snorkel stops; nights revolve around fire-show beach bars on Loh Dalum Bay and the cheapest bucket cocktails in Thailand.

Koh Phi Phi is a chain of six limestone islands between Phuket and Krabi in the Andaman Sea — the inhabited Phi Phi Don is shaped like a butterfly with a thin sand isthmus connecting two halves, and Phi Phi Leh, 4 km south, is uninhabited and houses Maya Bay
Maya Bay was the filming location for Danny Boyle's 2000 film The Beach (Leonardo DiCaprio) — closed in 2018 due to over-tourism damage and reopened in January 2022 with strict daily caps (around 4,500 visitors), no overnight stays, and a no-swimming-on-the-bay-side rule that lets the coral recover
Phi Phi Don has no roads and no cars or motorbikes — the entire inhabited zone of Tonsai Bay is pedestrian-only, with goods moved by handcart and longtail boat
The 2004 Boxing Day tsunami struck Phi Phi catastrophically — the wave hit both Tonsai Bay and Loh Dalum Bay simultaneously from opposite sides of the island's narrow neck, killing more than 700 residents and visitors and destroying most of the inhabited area
Ferries from Phuket take 90 minutes; from Krabi 90 minutes; from Koh Lanta 60 minutes — Phi Phi has no airport and no road connection to anywhere
Loh Dalum Bay (the north side of Phi Phi Don) is the nightlife heart — fire shows on the beach, bucket cocktails, and the loudest beach bars in the Andaman; Tonsai Bay (south side) is the ferry pier and quieter family-oriented side
Snorkeling and diving conditions in November-April are among the best in Thailand — the Bida Nok and Bida Nai reefs south of Phi Phi Leh are PADI training favourites with leopard sharks, sea turtles, and reef sharks
Top Sights
Maya Bay (Phi Phi Leh)
🏖️The filming location of The Beach, reopened in January 2022 with daily caps and a no-swimming-from-the-bay-side rule. Boats now dock at the rear of Phi Phi Leh and visitors walk a short trail to enter Maya Bay from the back. ฿400 entry. Most accessible via half-day or full-day tour from Phi Phi Don. Visit on the first morning slot to avoid the bigger Phuket day-trip flotilla.
Phi Phi Viewpoint
📌A 30-minute climb up steep concrete steps from Tonsai village to the highest accessible ridge of Phi Phi Don, with three viewing platforms. View 1 (closest, free) overlooks Tonsai Bay; View 2 (฿30) frames the iconic isthmus shot of both bays; View 3 (highest) is reached by a further 15-minute jungle scramble. Best at sunrise or one hour before sunset.
Loh Dalum Bay & Beach Bars
📌The northern bay of Phi Phi Don, fronted by a long sand beach and a strip of beach bars known for fire shows, bucket cocktails, and Muay Thai matches under thatch roofs. Slinky, Stones, and Carlito's are the venerable names. Action starts around 9pm and runs to 2am or later. Bring earplugs if you stay nearby.
Long Beach (Hat Yao)
🏖️A 30-minute walk south of Tonsai (or 5 minutes by longtail), Long Beach is a quieter alternative to Loh Dalum, with calm clear water, simple beach bars, and good shore snorkeling at the southern end. Several mid-range and budget bungalow resorts line the back of the beach. The walking trail crosses two small headlands.
Bamboo Island & Mosquito Island
🌿Two small islands northeast of Phi Phi Don. Bamboo Island has a perfect circle of white sand and shallow turquoise water for swimming; Mosquito Island is uninhabited with snorkeling reef but no beach landing. Most snorkel day trips include both. Bamboo Island has a ฿200 national park fee separate from boat tour cost.
Pileh Lagoon (Phi Phi Leh)
🌿A natural enclosed lagoon on the east side of Phi Phi Leh, with vivid emerald water surrounded by sheer 100-metre limestone walls. Boats can enter through a narrow gap; swimming and snorkeling inside is allowed. Almost every Phi Phi tour stops here.
Monkey Beach (Ao Ling)
🏖️A small beach on the west coast of Phi Phi Don accessible only by longtail boat (15 minutes from Tonsai). Crab-eating macaques live on the cliff above and routinely come down to the beach. Do not feed them and keep all food and drink secured. Half-day longtail tours include Monkey Beach with snorkeling at Ao Maya Bay nearby.
Diving at Bida Nok & Bida Nai
📌Two small limestone pinnacles south of Phi Phi Leh, with reef walls dropping 25-30 metres and frequent leopard shark, sea turtle, and reef shark sightings. A standard Phi Phi PADI Open Water training dive site. Day boats from Tonsai pier 8am-3pm. Two-tank dive ฿2,800-3,500.
Off the Beaten Path
Sunrise Maya Bay Tour
A handful of operators run sunrise tours that depart Tonsai pier at 5:30am and arrive at Maya Bay before the standard 9am-3pm slots open. ฿1,800-2,500 per person; book the day before through your hotel. Sunrise on the empty bay is the experience the daytime crowds came hoping for and never get.
Maya Bay since reopening has strict daily caps but the slots fill fast. The sunrise window is the only time the bay still feels like the postcard. Worth the early wake-up over almost any other Phi Phi activity.
View 1 at Sunset
View 1 is free and reaches in 20 minutes from Tonsai village; the higher Views 2 and 3 charge ฿30. View 1 frames the western Tonsai Bay and the sunset over the Andaman. The standard photo-postcard isthmus shot is from View 2; View 1 is often empty when the others are crowded.
Most visitors push straight to View 2 for the iconic isthmus shot and skip View 1 entirely. View 1 has the better sunset because it directly faces west, while View 2 is north-facing.
Long Beach Walk at Low Tide
At low tide you can walk from Tonsai to Long Beach (Hat Yao) in 30 minutes along the rocky coast — at high tide the route is flooded and you must take a longtail. The walk passes coves and small beaches that day-trippers never see. Check tide tables; aim for low tide between 7am and 11am for easy walking.
The longtail to Long Beach is fine but the walk along the coast is genuinely beautiful and almost entirely empty. Two hours away from the Loh Dalum noise.
Late-Night Roti at Tonsai Village
A handful of roti carts (Indian pancake stalls) set up in Tonsai village from around 8pm to 2am, selling chocolate-banana roti and savoury roti for ฿40-80. Most are on Soi Phra Nang and the small alley by the dive shops. The post-bar 1am roti is a Phi Phi rite of passage.
Phi Phi food otherwise is mostly mediocre tourist Thai. The roti carts are an exception — fresh, cheap, and a real local favourite. Find one that has a queue at 11pm.

🎉 Festivals & Events
Songkran (Thai New Year)
April 13-15Thailand's national water festival sees Tonsai village turn into a giant water fight lasting 2-3 days. Locals and tourists soak each other with water guns and buckets. Accept that everything you wear will be wet.
Loy Krathong
November (full moon)Thais release small lotus-shaped baskets bearing candles and incense onto the sea. Phi Phi celebrations take place at Tonsai and Loh Dalum bays — the lit krathongs drifting on the dark water are a moving sight.
Phi Phi Triathlon
October (alternate years)Annual triathlon with swim, kayak, and trail-run sections around Phi Phi Don. Open to amateur entrants. Brings a fitness crowd to the island during the rough monsoon weeks.
Thai New Year Lantern Festival
December 31Loh Dalum beach hosts a mass sky-lantern release at midnight on New Year's Eve, with dozens of beach bars running countdowns. The lanterns drifting over the bay are extraordinary; book accommodation 2-3 months ahead.
Safety Breakdown
Moderate
out of 100
Phi Phi is broadly safe for foreign travellers, with a heavy tourism economy and police presence. The main hazards are environmental, traffic-on-the-water, and alcohol-related: longtail boat accidents, drowning at unguarded beaches, sun and dehydration, and incidents at the Loh Dalum bars. Petty theft from beach loungers and unsecured rooms exists. Solo female travellers consistently report feeling safe but should exercise standard caution at the late-night Loh Dalum strip.
Things to Know
- •The Loh Dalum bars use fire shows nightly — keep at safe distance, do not pose with fire poles for photos, and watch your alcohol intake near the flames; injuries to drunk tourists happen every season
- •Do not drink anything from open bottles at the beach bars — drink tampering has been reported; order canned beer or bottle-opened-in-front-of-you cocktails
- •Bucket cocktails on Loh Dalum are notoriously strong and the alcohol quality is variable — pace yourself, especially in heat
- •Box jellyfish appear occasionally during monsoon (May-October); local pharmacies sell vinegar wash. Stings are rare but can be serious
- •Watch for rip currents at Loh Dalum during wet-season swells — there is no flag system; if seas look rough, swim only in shallow water
- •Falling coconuts cause injuries each year — heed signs under coconut palms on beaches; the danger is real
- •Keep valuables in hotel safes — beach lounger thefts during midday hours have been reported across all Phi Phi beaches
- •Sunburn is severe — UV at this latitude is intense even on overcast days; reef-safe SPF 50+ and a rash guard are sensible for full-day boat trips

💡 Money-Saving Tips
- •Stay on Long Beach rather than central Tonsai — bungalows are 30-40% cheaper, the beach is better, and the noise from Loh Dalum bars is gone
- •Withdraw cash before arriving on Phi Phi — mainland ATMs charge ฿220 per withdrawal versus ฿250 on the island, and Phi Phi machines often run dry at peak times
- •Eat at the small Thai restaurants in the back lanes of Tonsai rather than the main beach-facing strip — same dishes for half the price
- •Visit during May-October low season for 35-50% off accommodation — Maya Bay slots are easier to secure too
- •Book snorkel and Maya Bay tours direct from beach kiosks rather than through your hotel — the hotel mark-up is typically ฿200-400 per person
- •Buy beer and water from 7-Eleven rather than from beach bars — beer ฿35-50 at 7-Eleven versus ฿100-200 at bars
- •Walk everywhere on Phi Phi Don rather than taking water taxis — the island is small and the walks are scenic
- •Do snorkel trips from Tonsai pier rather than longtail charters — group trips include more sites for less money per person
Thai Baht
Code: THB
1 THB is approximately 0.03 USD (35 THB to 1 USD as of early 2026). Phi Phi has limited ATM access — about a dozen machines clustered near Tonsai pier and the village centre. Foreign card fees are ฿220 per withdrawal. Bring extra cash from Phuket or Krabi if planning longer stays. Exchange booths in Tonsai village offer worse rates than mainland — change money before arriving. USD cash is accepted at some larger resorts but at poor rates.
Payment Methods
Cash is essential on Phi Phi. Credit cards are accepted at larger resorts, dive shops, and some restaurants but with a 3-5% surcharge. ATMs cluster near Tonsai pier but can run dry during peak periods — withdraw cash early. Carry smaller bills (฿20, ฿50, ฿100) for boats, beach bars, and street food. The pier ฿20 entry fee is paid in cash.
Tipping Guide
Not traditionally expected but appreciated at tourist-oriented restaurants. Ten percent is generous. Some upscale places add a 10% service charge automatically.
No tip expected. Rounding up small change is fine.
฿20-50 tip per trip is appreciated, especially on rough crossings or if the driver waited for you. Not expected on shared fares.
฿100-200 per person for a full-day boat or snorkel tour is generous and warmly received. Guides depend heavily on tips.
฿200-400 per dive day is appreciated and customary at the larger schools.
฿20-50 per bag for porters; ฿20-50 per night for housekeeping at mid-range and above. Not expected at backpacker hostels.
฿50-100 per hour for traditional Thai massage. ฿200-300 at upscale resort spas.

Phi Phi Don has no roads, no cars, and no motorbikes. All in-island movement is on foot, by handcart for goods, and by longtail boat between beaches. Inter-island movement is by ferry to Phuket, Krabi, or Koh Lanta, or by speedboat day-tour. Tonsai pier handles all ferry traffic.
Walking
FreePhi Phi Don is entirely pedestrian — Tonsai village, the path to Loh Dalum, the climb to the viewpoint, and the trail to Long Beach are all walkable. Distances within the inhabited zone are 500m-2km. Wear sturdy sandals; the village paths are crowded and uneven.
Best for: All in-village movement and short hops to Long Beach
Longtail Boat
฿1,500-4,000 (~$43-114) private charterCharter longtails wait at Tonsai pier and Loh Dalum beach for charter trips around the island and Phi Phi Leh. Half-day private charter ฿1,500-2,500; full-day ฿2,500-4,000. Group day tours include longtail transport from ฿700 per person.

Best for: Onward travel to Phuket, Krabi, Koh Lanta
Beach-to-Beach Water Taxi
฿100-300 (~$3-9) per personSmall longtails will run quick beach transfers — Tonsai to Long Beach ฿100-150 per person, Tonsai to Loh Bagao ฿200-300. Useful late at night when the walking trail is closed by tide. Fix the price before boarding.
Best for: Beach transfers, late-night returns, high-tide bypass
Walkability
Tonsai village is entirely walkable — about a 1.5 km maze of pedestrian sois with restaurants, dive shops, and bars. The path to Loh Dalum takes 5 minutes. The viewpoint is a 20-30 minute climb from the village. Long Beach is a 30-minute walk at low tide or a 5-minute longtail. Phi Phi Don is one of the easiest beach destinations in Thailand for a car-free traveller.

Visa-Free Entry
Visa on Arrival
Tips
- •Keep your TM.6 departure card stapled in your passport — required when leaving Thailand
- •Phi Phi has no immigration office — extensions require ferry to Phuket or Krabi, which is a 2-3 hour each-way trip
- •For stays longer than 60 days, apply for a 60-day tourist visa at a Thai embassy before travel, or consider the Destination Thailand Visa (DTV) for remote workers
- •The pier ฿20 entry fee on arrival to Phi Phi is a separate non-immigration charge for waste management — non-negotiable, paid in cash
- •Dress modestly only at temples; standard beachwear is fine everywhere else on the island
Shopping
Phi Phi shopping is almost entirely tourist-oriented. Tonsai village has dozens of small shops selling beachwear, dive gear, sarongs, and souvenirs. Prices are higher than Phuket or Krabi (everything is shipped in by boat). Bargaining is expected at street stalls; avoid the most heavily marketed shops near the pier where mark-ups are highest.
Tonsai Village Shopping Sois
tourist shopsThe pedestrian sois of Tonsai village are dense with small shops selling elephant pants, fisherman trousers, sarongs, beach bags, sunglasses, and Phi Phi t-shirts. Prices are tourist-oriented; bargain 30-40% off marked prices.
Known for: Elephant pants, sarongs, dive t-shirts, beach bags, Thai boxing shorts
Dive Shops
specialty shopsPhi Phi has 30+ dive shops in Tonsai village offering courses, fun dives, and gear sales. Mask, snorkel, and fin sets ฿1,500-3,500. PADI Open Water courses ฿11,000-13,000. Many shops also rent gear by the day for non-divers wanting better snorkel kit than free hotel masks.
Known for: Snorkel and dive gear, PADI courses, day boat trips
Beachwear Boutiques
fashionSeveral mid-range boutiques along the main Tonsai sois sell Thai-designed beachwear, bikinis, kaftans, and resort wear. Prices ฿800-2,500 per item. More stylish than the standard sarong stalls.
Known for: Thai-designed swimwear, kaftans, resort dresses
Late-Night Convenience Stores
convenience7-Eleven and Family Mart have multiple Tonsai locations open 24 hours, with cheap beer (฿35-50), bottled water (฿15-25), snacks, sunscreen, and toiletries. Prices are 20-30% higher than mainland Thailand because of boat-shipping costs.
Known for: Cheap beer, bottled water, sunscreen, late-night supplies
🎁 Unique Souvenirs to Look For
- •Phi Phi or Maya Bay branded t-shirts and tank tops — sold in dozens of variations from every Tonsai shop
- •Hand-painted Phi Phi limestone karst paintings (small) from the boutiques on the main soi
- •Thai hill-tribe silver jewellery from the larger souvenir shops
- •Elephant-print cotton fisherman trousers — the unofficial uniform of Thai island travel
- •Thai boxing shorts — sold everywhere on the island and far cheaper than at home
- •Reef-safe sun cream from dive shops — important for snorkeling at protected sites
- •Coconut-shell carved jewellery and small boxes
- •Thai silk scarves in Andaman blues and greens

| Hello (female / male speaker) | Sawasdee kha / Sawasdee khrap | sah-wah-DEE kah / sah-wah-DEE krahp |
| Thank you (female / male speaker) | Khob khun kha / Khob khun khrap | kohp KOON kah / kohp KOON krahp |
