Manado is the capital of North Sulawesi province (Sulawesi Utara) and one of the few Indonesian cities where Christians form the overwhelming majority โ about 70-75% of the Minahasan population is Christian (mostly Protestant), the legacy of 19th-century Dutch missionary work
The city sits 1.5 degrees north of the equator at the northern tip of Sulawesi island โ its airport (MDC) is the gateway to Bunaken National Marine Park, a 75,000-hectare protected reserve featuring some of the most accessible deep-wall diving in the world
Bunaken Marine Park preserves vertical coral walls that drop 1,500 metres into the Sulawesi Sea, with reliable sightings of green and hawksbill turtles, schools of barracuda, occasional manta rays at Manta Point near Lembeh, and an estimated 70+ coral species per dive
Lembeh Strait, an hour east by car and ferry, is regarded as the world capital of muck diving โ black volcanic sand bottoms hide hairy frogfish, mimic octopus, ghost pipefish, mandarin fish and dozens of other rare critters that draw underwater photographers from around the world
Tomohon, an hour south of Manado at 700 m elevation, hosts the Pasar Beriman (Faith Market) where Minahasan cooks shop for the famously eclectic ingredients of their cuisine โ including paniki (fruit bat), rica-rica (extreme chilli stew) and the occasional dog and python (controversial; tourist-friendly stalls do not sell these)
Christ Blessing (Yesus Memberkati) statue in the Citraland district is the third-tallest Jesus statue in the world at 50 metres including the 30 m base โ built by the Ciputra group and unveiled in 2007. Free to visit; impressive at sunset
Top Sights
Bunaken National Marine Park
๐ณA 75,000-hectare marine reserve covering five islands (Bunaken, Manado Tua, Siladen, Mantehage, Nain) reachable in 30-45 minutes by speedboat from Manado port. Vertical coral walls drop to 1,500 m, schools of barracuda and reef sharks, hawksbill turtles on most dives, 70+ coral species. Park entry IDR 150,000 for foreigners.
Lembeh Strait (muck diving)
๐ณA 1-hour drive plus 15-min ferry east to the volcanic-sand strait between Lembeh island and the Sulawesi mainland โ globally regarded as the best muck-diving site on Earth. Hairy frogfish, mimic octopus, ghost pipefish, flamboyant cuttlefish, and the rare wonderpus. Most divers stay in Lembeh resorts (Kungkungan Bay, NAD Lembeh) for 3-7 nights.
Tomohon Pasar Beriman (Faith Market)
๐A vast highland market 1 hour south of Manado where Minahasan cooks shop for the eclectic ingredients of their cuisine โ orchids and chrysanthemums in the morning flower section, fruit bats and snake meat in the controversial protein section. Best 06:00-10:00. Park outside; walk through with a local guide.
Christ Blessing (Yesus Memberkati) statue
๐The 50-metre statue of Christ in the Citraland luxury subdivision โ the third-tallest Jesus statue in the world (after Christ the King in Poland and Cristo de la Concordia in Bolivia). Unique angled posture leaning forward over the city. Free to visit; viewpoint deck below the statue. Sunset is the moment.
Tangkoko Nature Reserve
๐ณA protected forest reserve next to Lembeh hosting the endemic black crested macaque (Macaca nigra, with the punk-rock hairdo), the tarsius spectrum (a saucer-eyed primate cousin of the Philippine tarsier), and the maleo bird. Guided 2-hour walks at dawn and dusk for the best wildlife. Entry IDR 150,000.
Linow Lake
๐A volcanic crater lake near Tomohon famous for its constantly shifting colour โ turquoise, green and red according to the day's mineral and algal balance. Surrounded by sulphur fumaroles and a small cafรฉ terrace where you can drink the famous Tomohon arabica. Entry IDR 30,000.
Mahawu Crater hike
๐A short (15 min) hike from the parking area to the rim of Mount Mahawu volcano (1,324 m) for views into the active crater and across the Tomohon plateau to Mount Lokon. Walkway around the rim takes 45 minutes. Entry IDR 10,000.
Boulevard waterfront promenade
๐The reclaimed waterfront strip along the Manado coast (Jl Piere Tendean) lined with malls (Manado Town Square, Mantos), seafood restaurants and weekend night markets. Sunset over the Bunaken silhouette is one of the city's daily highlights.
Off the Beaten Path
Wakeke Bubur Tinutuan strip
A short street in central Manado lined with warungs serving tinutuan (Manado porridge) for breakfast โ a thick rice and corn porridge with pumpkin, cassava leaf, basil and salted fish. IDR 25,000-40,000 a bowl.
Tinutuan is the Manado morning ritual; locals queue 06:00-09:00 at the half-dozen Wakeke specialists and the porridge runs out by 10:00. The condiment table of sambal roa (smoked-fish chilli paste) is the secret weapon.
Ikan Bakar 99 (waterfront)
A no-frills waterfront seafood warung where you pick your fish from the morning catch (snapper, grouper, skipjack, mahi-mahi) and the kitchen grills it over coconut husks with rica-rica chilli paste. IDR 80,000-200,000 per fish.
The waterfront has a dozen seafood restaurants but Ikan Bakar 99 is where the dive instructors and Bunaken boatmen actually eat. The dabu-dabu salsa is the test โ fresh, fierce and free.
Kawanua Coffee (Tomohon plantation)
A small Tomohon arabica plantation 45 minutes south of Manado offering 2-hour tours covering the entire bean-to-cup process โ tree to fermentation to washing to roasting to cup. IDR 150,000 per person includes a full tasting and a 250 g bag.
Tomohon arabica is genuinely excellent โ high altitude, volcanic soil, washed processing โ but rarely seen outside North Sulawesi. The plantation is family-run and the price-versus-quality is exceptional.
Boulevard sunset dock fishermen
Every evening the local fishermen set up alongside the Boulevard reclamation strip selling the day's catch directly off their wooden boats โ skipjack tuna, marlin, mackerel, the occasional reef shark. IDR 30,000-80,000 per kilo.
You can buy a whole skipjack for less than the cost of a Bintang and bring it to the next-door warungs to grill on the spot. A genuine working scene that has not yet been gentrified.

Safety Breakdown
Moderate
out of 100
Manado is among the safer Indonesian cities for tourists โ Christian-majority Minahasan culture is open and friendly to visitors, petty crime is low, and the city receives modest international tourism numbers (mostly divers) with no entrenched scam ecosystem. Real risks are scooter accidents, dive incidents, and the occasional malaria case in Lembeh and Tangkoko.
Things to Know
- โขDiver safety โ Bunaken walls drop to 1,500 m and currents can be strong; only dive within your certification limit and use operators with current PADI or SSI accreditation
- โขMalaria is present in low numbers in Lembeh and Tangkoko โ consult a travel doctor about prophylaxis for trips of more than 3-4 days; sleep under a treated net
- โขVolcano alerts โ Mount Lokon and Mount Soputan in the Tomohon area are both active; check magma.esdm.go.id before any approach
- โขTap water is not potable โ drink bottled or boiled water; ice in mid-range and dive resort restaurants is safe (made from filtered water)
- โขUse Grab or Gojek rather than street taxis to avoid meter-tampering scams
- โขIn Lembeh, the boat drivers anchor on volcanic-sand bottoms โ wear thick-soled water shoes against the occasional sea urchin or stonefish

๐ก Money-Saving Tips
- โขStay in Manado city and do day trips to Bunaken rather than a Bunaken resort โ saves 50% on accommodation though you lose the early-morning dive window
- โขBook diving directly with Bunaken or Lembeh operators by email โ booking platforms add 15-25% commission
- โขEat tinutuan and grilled fish at warungs rather than the Boulevard tourist restaurants โ same quality at a fraction of the price
- โขUse Grab Bike for short trips (IDR 8,000-15,000) instead of Grab Car when travelling alone
- โขTomohon is reachable by mikrolet from Karombasan terminal for IDR 15,000 if you have a half-day to spare and no aversion to chickens on board
- โขBring your own dive computer โ most operators rent for IDR 100,000-150,000/day which adds up over a week
- โขSkip the Tomohon market shock-tour โ go for the highland scenery, Linow Lake and Mahawu hike instead
Indonesian Rupiah
Code: IDR
1 USD is approximately 15,300 IDR (early 2026). ATMs are widespread in Manado city centre โ use BCA, Mandiri or BNI ATMs in malls or bank lobbies to avoid skimmers. Bunaken and Lembeh resorts often have on-site cash exchange but at poor rates; bring sufficient IDR cash for tips and incidentals.
Payment Methods
Cash dominates outside the modern malls. Mantos, Megamall and most central hotels accept Visa and Mastercard with a 2-3% surcharge. Bunaken and Lembeh dive resorts often require 50% deposit by bank transfer and the balance in cash on arrival. QRIS QR-code payment is growing but not universal.
Tipping Guide
IDR 50,000-100,000 per dive (~$3.25-6.50) for good guides who spotted creatures and watched the group carefully. On a multi-day Bunaken or Lembeh stay, IDR 100,000-150,000 per day pooled is standard.
IDR 50,000-100,000 per day (~$3.25-6.50) pooled, given to the dive operator at the end of the trip.
Mid-range and upscale restaurants add 10% service plus 11% tax; no additional tip expected. At warungs, round up to the nearest IDR 5,000.
IDR 20,000-50,000 ($1.30-3.25) per bag for porters at upscale hotels. IDR 30,000/day for housekeeping at dive resorts.
IDR 80,000-150,000 ($5-10) per day for a Tomohon or Lembeh transfer driver. More if they doubled as guide.
IDR 50,000-100,000 (~$3.25-6.50) for a 2-hour market walk-through.

Entry Requirements
Indonesia offers Visa on Arrival (VOA) to citizens of most Western countries valid for 30 days and extendable once for another 30 days. The VOA costs IDR 500,000 (~$33) at the airport. The e-VOA is recommended (apply at molina.imigrasi.go.id before travel). Indonesia's tourist tax of IDR 150,000 applies only to Bali arrivals, not Sam Ratulangi (MDC).
Entry Requirements by Nationality

Visa on Arrival
Tips
- โขApply for the e-VOA online before travel โ saves 30-60 minutes at Sam Ratulangi arrivals
- โขBunaken National Park entry tickets are bought separately from your boat tour โ keep the receipt as rangers spot-check at the marine park boundary
- โขIf you fly via Singapore (SilkAir / Scoot direct route), the Singapore ASEAN visa-waiver simplifies the layover
- โขBring proof of onward travel and accommodation booking โ immigration at MDC has been known to ask, especially for solo arrivals on long stays
- โขCarry sufficient IDR cash for the VOA fee at the airport โ credit card payment is officially supported but the terminals are unreliable
Shopping
Manado is not a major shopping destination โ visitors come for the diving, not the boutiques. The city has two main mall complexes (Manado Town Square and Mantos) and a working wet market downtown. Distinctive local goods are Tomohon coffee, kain bentenan ikat textile, and processed cengkih (clove) products. Bargaining is expected at traditional markets but malls are fixed price.

Language & Phrases
Indonesian is universal in Manado. The local Manado Malay (Bahasa Manado) is a creole spoken at home with strong Dutch and Portuguese loanwords โ "kita" meaning "I" rather than the standard Indonesian "we", "ngana" meaning "you", "torang" meaning "we". A few Manado tags ("kita pe nama..." = "my name is...") earn instant warmth from locals.
