How do Mexico City and Seoul compare?

Two megacity capitals on opposite sides of the Pacific, both 5-rated for cultural sites and food scene, both legendary for late-night street life — but the price-and-safety gap is real. Mexico City is Latin America's cultural capital — the Zócalo's Aztec Templo Mayor sitting beside the Spanish-colonial Catedral, Frida Kahlo's Casa Azul in Coyoacán, $2 al pastor tacos at El Vilsito, and a 9 PM Roma-Norte mezcalería scene. Seoul is hyper-modern Asia density — Gyeongbokgung Palace and Bukchon Hanok Village, Myeongdong shopping, Korean BBQ in Gangnam, and 5 AM Hongdae bars.

Mid-range budgets land at $115 in Mexico City against $135 in Seoul. Mexico City wins on value, cultural-historical depth (3,000 years of layered civilizations in 12 km), and the kind of food range — pre-Hispanic, mole-driven, Pujol's tasting menu — that genuinely rivals any food capital. Seoul wins on safety (85 vs 60 — CDMX has real petty-crime concerns in Insurgentes/Reforma), transit (5 vs 4 — Seoul's subway is the gold standard), cleanliness (4 vs 3), and the K-pop/K-drama cultural moment that's hard to overstate right now.

Practical move: don't combine them; they're 16 hours and a Pacific apart. Pick one and commit a full week. Time Mexico City March–May or October–November (rainy season is May–October but afternoons-only). Time Seoul April–May (cherry blossoms) or September–October (foliage). Festival anchor: Día de los Muertos late October–early November for CDMX; Seoul Lantern Festival early November.

🛡️ Safety

Mexico City60/100Safety Score88/100Seoul

Mexico City

Mexico City's tourist areas (Roma, Condesa, Polanco, Coyoacan, Centro Historico) are generally safe during the day. Petty crime like phone snatching and pickpocketing occurs. Use common sense, stay in well-traveled areas at night, and use ride-hailing apps rather than hailing random cabs.

Seoul

Seoul is one of the safest major cities in the world. Violent crime against tourists is extremely rare. You can walk through most neighborhoods at any hour with minimal concern. Petty theft is uncommon compared to European cities. The main "risks" are taxi overcharging and the occasional bar scam in Itaewon.

🌤️ Weather

Mexico City

Mexico City's high altitude gives it a mild, spring-like climate year-round. There are two main seasons: dry (November-April) and rainy (May-October). Temperatures are remarkably consistent, rarely exceeding 28°C or dropping below 5°C.

Dry Season (November - April)7-24°C
Rainy Season (May - October)12-25°C
Spring (transition) (March - May)10-27°C
Autumn (transition) (September - November)10-23°C

Seoul

Seoul has a humid continental climate with four very distinct seasons. Summers are hot and humid with a monsoon season (jangma) in July. Winters are cold and dry with Siberian air masses. Spring and autumn are short but spectacular.

Spring (March - May)4-23°C
Summer (June - August)22-33°C
Autumn (September - November)3-25°C
Winter (December - February)-7-4°C

🚇 Getting Around

Mexico City

Mexico City has an enormous public transit network anchored by the Metro (12 lines), Metrobus (rapid transit buses), and regular buses. The Metro is incredibly cheap but crowded during rush hours. Uber and DiDi are widely used and affordable.

Walkability: Central neighborhoods like Roma, Condesa, Coyoacan, and Centro Historico are very walkable with wide sidewalks and pleasant tree-lined streets. Chapultepec and Polanco also reward walking. However, the city is vast — distances between neighborhoods often require transit. Sidewalks can be uneven, and traffic is aggressive at crossings.

Metro CDMXMXN 5 (~$0.28 USD) per ride — rechargeable Metro card required
MetrobusMXN 6 (~$0.34 USD) per ride with rechargeable card
Uber / DiDi / InDriverMXN 60-200 (~$3.40-11 USD) for most trips within central neighborhoods

Seoul

Seoul has one of the world's best public transit systems. The subway is clean, punctual, and covers virtually everywhere you need to go. Get a T-money card (reloadable transit card) at any convenience store for 2,500 KRW and load it up. It works on subways, buses, and even taxis and convenience stores.

Walkability: Seoul is moderately walkable but spread out. The historic core (Jongno, Insadong, Bukchon) is compact and pleasant on foot. Hilly terrain in some neighborhoods (Bukchon, Itaewon) can be tiring. Use the subway to cover distances between districts and walk within them.

Seoul Metro / Subway1,400-2,500 KRW (~$1.05-1.85) depending on distance with T-money
Seoul City Buses1,200-2,500 KRW (~$0.90-1.85) with T-money; free transfers within 30 min
Kakao T (Taxi)4,800 KRW base fare + 100 KRW per 131m; typical ride 7,000-15,000 KRW (~$5.20-11)
