How do Mallorca and Seville compare?

Two Spanish moods in one debate: Mallorca is the Balearic island where Palma's Gothic cathedral La Seu rises straight from the harbour, the Serra de Tramuntana's UNESCO terraces drop into pine-fringed coves, and Cap de Formentor's lighthouse marks the dramatic northern tip. Seville is the Andalusian heat-and-flamenco capital where the Real Alcázar's Mudejar courtyards run cool tile against orange-blossom air, the Cathedral and Giralda tower stand over Santa Cruz alleys, and Triana's tablao bars run flamenco late into the night. The choice is sea-and-hike against tapas-and-tile.

Mid-range budgets diverge meaningfully — Mallorca runs about $220 a day on island-hotel and rental-car economics, while Seville sits at $140 with cheap pension stays and $3 cañas of beer. Mallorca scores higher on safety (86 vs 80) and nature (5 vs 3); Seville wins on walkability and cultural sites tied at 5. There is no direct flight between the two, but Vueling and Ryanair run Palma-Seville in 1h 25min for around $50-90 if you book three weeks ahead. Both peak April through June and again September-October before the Andalusian August furnace and the German charter season hit.

A combined ten-day Spain swing works cleanly: four nights Seville with a Cordoba day trip, then fly to Palma for five nights split between the Tramuntana villages of Deia and Valldemossa and the southern coves at Cala Mondrago. Pro tip: rent a car the moment you land in Mallorca — the bus network barely covers the interior, and the back roads through Soller and Sa Calobra are the actual reason to come. Pick Mallorca for island hiking, terraced olive groves, and Mediterranean coves; Pick Seville for flamenco nights, Moorish architecture, and tapas crawls in Santa Cruz.

🛡️ Safety

Mallorca80/100Safety Score78/100Seville

Mallorca

Mallorca is generally very safe — violent crime is rare and the Guardia Civil and Policía Local are visible and effective. The main risks are everyday tourist-economy ones: pickpocketing in central Palma and the harbour, opportunistic vehicle break-ins at trailheads and beach car parks, and the well-publicised drunk-tourism issues in Magaluf and Playa de Palma. The road network requires respect — the Tramuntana coast road and the Sa Calobra descent are not forgiving — and the Mediterranean current at certain north-coast beaches genuinely catches swimmers out.

Seville

Seville is generally safe but has higher pickpocketing rates than many European cities. Tourist-heavy areas like the Cathedral, Plaza de Espana, and the Santa Cruz quarter are hotspots. Bag snatching from scooters also occurs.

🌤️ Weather

Mallorca

Mallorca has a textbook Mediterranean climate — hot dry summers, mild wet winters, around 300 sunny days a year. Palma averages 18°C across the year, with July highs around 31°C and January lows around 6°C. Annual rainfall is 350–500 mm depending on where you are on the island (the Tramuntana mountains catch significantly more than the southern plain), concentrated almost entirely in October–December. Sea temperatures are swimmable June through October — peaking around 26°C in August and still 23°C in early October. The island's tourist season is dictated by air temperature: charter traffic from May 1 to October 31, near-silence in winter outside Palma itself.

Spring (March - May)10 to 22°C
Summer (June - August)20 to 31°C
Autumn (September - November)12 to 27°C
Winter (December - February)6 to 16°C

🚇 Getting Around

Mallorca

Palma itself is walkable and well-served by EMT city buses and a small Metro; the rest of the island is best explored by hire car, with the TIB (Transports Illes Balears) intercity bus network as the main alternative. The 1912 Tren de Sóller is a destination in itself rather than a real transit option. Distances are deceptively long — Palma to Cap de Formentor is 75 km and 90 minutes — and a hire car for at least three days is the standard recommendation for any non-Palma trip.

Walkability: Excellent inside Palma's old town (1.5 km square), good along the seafront and into Santa Catalina, limited beyond. Almost no resort towns are walkable end-to-end without a hire car. The Tramuntana hill villages (Valldemossa, Deià, Sóller, Fornalutx) are individually walkable but the connections between them are road-only.

Walking (central Palma)Free
EMT Palma city buses and TIB intercity buses€2–11 per journey
Palma Metro and Sóller train€1.50–32

Seville

Seville's old town is compact and best explored on foot. The city has a single metro line, an extensive bus network, a tram, and an excellent public bike-sharing system (Sevici). The historic center is largely pedestrianized.

Walkability: Seville's centro historico is very walkable and largely flat. The main sights are clustered within a 20-minute walk of each other. The pedestrianized streets around the Cathedral and Santa Cruz are delightful. Summer heat is the main obstacle to walking.
