🛡️ Safety

Komodo Islands68/100Safety Score75/100Raja Ampat

Komodo Islands

The Komodo Islands are generally safe for travelers, but the remote marine environment and presence of Komodo dragons demand respect. Strong ocean currents at dive sites are the primary risk. Always use licensed guides in the national park — it is mandatory and enforced.

Raja Ampat

Raja Ampat is physically safe in terms of crime — the communities are welcoming and tourist-related crime is essentially unheard of. The main risks are maritime (rough seas, boat safety), diving-related (decompression illness, strong currents), and remoteness (medical facilities are 1.5 hr away in Sorong).

🚇 Getting Around

Komodo Islands

Komodo National Park is entirely boat-accessed from Labuan Bajo, a small harbor town on western Flores. There are no roads or public transport between the islands. All exploration happens by boat — day trips, multi-day liveaboards, or private charters.

Walkability: Labuan Bajo town is small and walkable along the main harbor road. Within the national park, guided walking trails on Komodo and Rinca islands are 1-4 km. Padar Island has a single steep hiking trail. No roads exist on any park island.

Multi-Day Liveaboard Boats$150-400/day depending on boat class
Day Trip SpeedboatsIDR 600,000-1,500,000 ($38-95) per person shared; $200-400 private charter
Dive Operator BoatsIDR 2,500,000-4,500,000 ($160-285) for 2-3 dives including gear

Raja Ampat

All transport in Raja Ampat is by boat. The main port is Waisai on Waigeo Island. Speedboats (sewa kapal) can be chartered between sites; public ferries connect major islands on a slow schedule. Most resorts and homestays arrange transport for guests.

Walkability: Very low — essentially all movement is by boat.

Charter SpeedboatIDR 1,500,000–3,000,000/day
Public Ferry (Waisai–Sorong)IDR 120,000–250,000

The Verdict

Choose Komodo Islands if...

you want live dragons + pink sand — Komodo + Rinca ranger treks, Padar viewpoint, Pink Beach, Manta Point snorkel, and Labuan Bajo liveaboards

Choose Raja Ampat if...

you want the world's richest marine biodiversity — 75% of all coral species, manta ray cleaning stations, whale sharks, and karst island magic. Pure expedition diving; not a beach-bars destination
