How do Jeju and Seoul compare?

By day three of any Korea trip, the question is rarely Seoul vs the rest — it's whether to fly south for Jeju's volcanic coast or stay in the capital. Seoul is K-pop neon, 24/7 Korean BBQ in Mapo, the night market under Dongdaemun's Zaha Hadid curve, and a metro that runs to the airport in 50 minutes. Jeju is the opposite tempo: 1,947m Hallasan rising out of the sea, 7-km lava tubes at Manjanggul that smell of cold mineral wet, and haenyeo women in their 70s walking out of the surf with octopus.

Mid-range budgets land at $135 in Seoul against $150 on Jeju — Seoul wins on value because Jeju's resort coast inflates room rates, especially in summer. A pork-belly samgyeopsal dinner in Hongdae runs $20 a head; the same meal in Jeju City pushes $30 because everything except black-pig pork is shipped over. Seoul gives you the world-class transit and nightlife (Itaewon and Hongdae go until 4 AM); Jeju gives you the 425-km Olle coastal trail and a sunrise climb up Seongsan Ilchulbong that genuinely needs a 5 AM start.

Practical tip: domestic flights from Gimpo to Jeju run $40-60 round-trip and take 65 minutes — combine both for a 7-day trip and book the flight in advance because this is the busiest air route on Earth. Time Jeju for late April through early June or October to dodge typhoons; Seoul peaks in the same shoulder windows but adds the cherry-blossom rush at Yeouido in early April.
