Cherokee, Bryson City, and Townsend are compact but you'll still need a car to reach trailheads.

Expect traffic — rush hour on the 405 or 101 can be brutal. Rideshare is widespread, and neighborhoods like Santa Monica, Venice, and Downtown are walkable in pockets.
