How do Dubrovnik and Sofia compare?

Adriatic UNESCO postcard versus underrated Balkan capital — same continent, opposite price tags. Dubrovnik is Game-of-Thrones tour groups packed onto the Stradun, the salt-and-pine air on the city walls walk, and Buža Bar's cliff-side cocktails over the Adriatic. Sofia is Eastern Orthodox onion domes (Alexander Nevsky), the smell of banitsa-and-yogurt breakfasts at Sun and Moon, and Vitosha Boulevard cafés where two espressos and a slice of cake costs €3.

Mid-range nights cost $200 in Dubrovnik against $85 in Sofia — that's a 58% gap, the largest in this bucket, and it shows up everywhere. Dubrovnik mid-range covers a small Old Town apartment that books out four months ahead in July; Sofia's $85 buys a four-star hotel in Center with breakfast included. Walkability is similar (Dubrovnik 5/5, Sofia 4/5), but Dubrovnik is a 1-square-kilometer marble theme park while Sofia is a real working capital with metro (4/5 transit vs 2/5). Cultural sites are 4/5 in both, but Sofia's free Boyana Church and Rila Monastery day-trip ($10 bus) deliver more art per dollar.

Combine via Wizz Air SOF-DBV ($90) and a 6-day twin works well (3 each). Time Dubrovnik for May or late September (June-August is wall-to-wall cruise-ship traffic); time Sofia for May (Rila lilacs) or October (Vitosha foliage).
