How do Athens and Fethiye compare?
Athens and Fethiye are both Eastern Mediterranean, both reachable on the same SunExpress or Aegean route, and both anchor very different trip styles. Athens is 3.2 million metro under the Acropolis — the Parthenon, the Acropolis Museum, Plaka taverna nights, Lycabettus sunset, and ferries out of Piraeus to Santorini, Mykonos, and the Cyclades. Fethiye is 170,000 wrapped around a sheltered Lycian harbour bay, with Ölüdeniz's Blue Lagoon 14km south, paragliders launching off Mount Babadağ (1,969m) toward the turquoise lagoon, the western Lycian Way trailhead, the 12-island gulet cruise route, the rock-cut Tomb of Amyntas, and the abandoned Greek ghost village of Kayaköy.
Costs run in Fethiye's favour. Athens sits at $160/day mid-range; Fethiye at $85, with the gap most pronounced on accommodation and gulet cruises. Both are best April through May and September through October — July and August work for Fethiye's beach scene but Athens summer (34°C average) is punishing on Acropolis stone. Both score 5/5 on cultural sites and food, but in different registers — Athens is Greek classical and modern Aegean cuisine; Fethiye is Turkish Mediterranean (mezze, fresh fish, Turkish breakfast) with the Aegean coast's calm influence. Athens scores higher on transit and English fluency; Fethiye scores higher on nature access and on safety relative to cost.
Most travelers fold them into a single Aegean loop — fly into Athens for four nights, ferry or fly Cyclades for a week, then ferry from Rhodes to Marmaris and overland to Fethiye for four nights of gulet cruising and Ölüdeniz time. Pro tip: book a 3-day, 12-island gulet cruise from Fethiye to Olympos in advance through a reputable operator (Olympos Yachting or similar) — the per-day cost runs around $80 with all meals and the Lycian coast scenery is the entire reason to come. Pick Athens for Acropolis-Parthenon classical-Greece weight, taverna culture, and a ferry hub for the Cyclades; Pick Fethiye for the turquoise coast — Ölüdeniz lagoon, paragliding off Babadağ, gulet cruises, and Kayaköy ghost village at half Athens prices.

🛡️ Safety
Athens
Athens is generally safe for tourists. The main risks are pickpocketing on crowded metro lines and in tourist areas (Monastiraki, Plaka, Syntagma), bag snatching on motorbikes, and some petty scams. Exercise normal urban awareness, especially on public transport and at night around Omonia Square.
Fethiye
Fethiye is a safe and well-organised tourist destination — violent crime against visitors is extremely rare and the tourist police are visible around Ölüdeniz and the Fethiye harbour. Standard concerns are physical (paragliding, boat-cruise sun exposure, gorge hiking) rather than crime-related. The ageing British and German expat communities (Hisarönü is sometimes nicknamed "Little Britain") give the area an additional layer of foreign-language tourist services.
🌤️ Weather
Athens
Athens has a hot Mediterranean climate with long, dry summers and mild, wet winters. Summer temperatures regularly exceed 35°C and the Acropolis bakes in the sun. Spring and autumn are ideal for sightseeing. Winter is mild with some rain but temperatures rarely drop below 5°C.
Fethiye
Fethiye has one of Turkey's most reliable Mediterranean climates — warm dry summers (June–September often 32–38°C), mild wet winters (December–March 10–18°C), and 300+ sunny days per year. The Bey Mountains rising directly behind the coast moderate the heat. Sea temperatures stay swimmable from May to November. Babadağ paragliding operates April–October.
🚇 Getting Around
Athens
Athens has a modern metro system (built for the 2004 Olympics), extensive bus and trolleybus network, and a tram line to the coast. A single ticket costs €1.20 and is valid for 90 minutes on all modes. The 5-day tourist ticket (€9) is excellent value.
Walkability: Central Athens is very walkable, though hilly in places. The pedestrianized Dionyssiou Areopagitou walkway around the Acropolis is one of Europe's finest urban walks. Plaka, Monastiraki, and Syntagma are all within easy walking distance of each other. The heat in summer can make walking exhausting — carry water.
Fethiye
Fethiye and the surrounding Lycian coast are served by extensive dolmuş (minibus) networks running between Fethiye centre, Hisarönü, Ölüdeniz, Çalış, and Kayaköy. Distances are short (Ölüdeniz is 14 km from Fethiye centre) and minibuses are constant. For day trips along the Lycian coast (Saklıkent, Tlos, Pinara), a rental car is significantly more flexible than organised tours; rentals are widely available from €25–€40/day.
Walkability: Fethiye centre is walkable — the harbour, the Tomb of Amyntas hillside, the bazaar, and the Yacht Marina fit in a 1.5 km strip. Ölüdeniz beachfront is walkable along the promenade. Hisarönü is walkable end-to-end in 20 minutes. Between these areas, dolmuş is the standard.
