How do Chengdu and Guilin compare?

If you've already booked Beijing and Shanghai and want a third Chinese stop with a softer pace, this is the classic split between panda-and-spice city and karst-river landscape. Chengdu is the Sichuan capital — the Giant Panda Breeding Research Base with 200-plus pandas at 7:30am feeding, mouth-numbing Sichuan hotpot, biàn liǎn face-changing opera at Shufeng Yayun, Jinli Ancient Street tea houses, and a day trip to the 71-metre Leshan Giant Buddha. Guilin is the karst landscape on the back of the 20-yuan note — the Li River bamboo-raft cruise to Yangshuo, Xianggong Hill viewpoint, the 800-year-old Longji Rice Terraces, Reed Flute Cave, and Elephant Trunk Hill in town.

Cost is essentially tied — $80-95 a day mid-range — and both score 3 for English, 5 for nature access, and 4 for food. The transit reality: Chengdu has a major international airport (CTU and TFU) with direct hubs from across Asia, Europe, and the US; Guilin (KWL) typically requires a connection through Guangzhou, Shanghai, or Beijing. Direct flight Chengdu-Guilin is about 90 minutes for $80-120, or 8 hours by high-speed rail. Most travelers do both: Chengdu for two nights with the panda morning and a Sichuan hotpot night, then a quick flight to Guilin for three nights split between Guilin city and Yangshuo riverside. Both peak April-May and September-October; July-August is hot and humid.

Pro tip: in Guilin, skip the city centre after one night and take the morning bamboo raft from Yangdi to Xingping (the actual 20-yuan note view is at Xingping), then base in Yangshuo for two nights with the Yulong River bike ride and the Impression Sanjie Liu light show. Pick Chengdu for pandas, Sichuan food at the source, and a major-city base for west China. Pick Guilin for the most photographed karst landscape on Earth, slower river days, and the kind of scenery that looks Photoshopped until you see it.
