How do Chengdu and Hong Kong compare?
If you have a free week somewhere in greater China, this is the inland-versus-coast choice that defines the trip. Chengdu is the 9-million-person Sichuan capital and the panda capital of the world — the Giant Panda Breeding Research Base houses over 200 pandas (visit at 7:30 a.m. for the active feeding window), Sichuan cuisine's málà numbing-spice is China's most internationally influential regional cooking, and Sichuan Opera's biàn liǎn face-changing is a UNESCO intangible heritage art performed nightly along Jinli Ancient Street. Hong Kong is the 7.5-million-person vertical city — Victoria Peak's tram up to the world's most photographed skyline, the Star Ferry across the harbour for HK$5, dim sum at Tim Ho Wan, and Lantau's Big Buddha 35 minutes from the airport on the MTR.
The airport gap is the easiest tell on which trip you are taking. Hong Kong (HKG) is the regional Asian hub with cheap fares from anywhere — 5 hours from Sydney, 13 hours direct from London. Chengdu (TFU and CTU) is a 3-hour domestic flight from Shanghai, Beijing, or HKG (around 700 RMB / 100 USD) and almost no one flies in directly from outside Asia. Mid-range budgets diverge: Chengdu runs 80 USD/day, Hong Kong runs 185 USD/day on hotel costs alone. Both peak October-November and March-April, and Hong Kong's English-everywhere infrastructure is far easier than Chengdu where signage and menus assume Mandarin literacy.
Most travellers do not pick — they hop. The 3-hour Cathay Dragon flight from HKG to CTU runs around HK$1,200 (~150 USD) one way and turns this into an easy 10-day combo: 4 nights Hong Kong, fly to Chengdu for 5 with a Leshan Giant Buddha day trip and a panda morning. Pro tip: book the Chengdu panda volunteer programme three months ahead — it is the one Sichuan experience that sells out hard, and feeding bamboo to a 90 kg cub is the photograph of the trip. Pick Hong Kong for skyline, dim sum, and frictionless logistics. Pick Chengdu for pandas, hotpot, and a deeper inland-China week.

🛡️ Safety
Chengdu
Chengdu is a very safe city for tourists. China generally has low violent crime rates and Chengdu specifically is considered relaxed and welcoming. The main issues are scams targeting tourists (tea ceremony scams, "art student" approaches) and traffic (pedestrian crossings are advisory rather than enforced).
Hong Kong
Hong Kong is one of the safest major cities in the world. Violent crime is extremely rare and the city is safe to walk around at any hour. Petty crime like pickpocketing is uncommon but possible in crowded tourist areas. The MTR and public spaces are well-monitored. The main safety considerations are natural (typhoons) rather than criminal.
🌤️ Weather
Chengdu
Chengdu sits in the Sichuan Basin — a climate that is mild year-round but famously overcast. The basin traps moisture from the Tibetan Plateau, resulting in more foggy days than almost any major Chinese city. Summers are hot and humid; winters are mild but grey. Clear blue sky is genuinely rare and celebrated by locals.
Hong Kong
Hong Kong has a subtropical climate with hot, humid summers and cool, dry winters. The monsoon season brings heavy rainfall from May through September. Typhoons are possible June through October. The most comfortable months are October through December with clear skies and pleasant temperatures.
🚇 Getting Around
Chengdu
Chengdu has an excellent metro system with 11+ lines covering the city and reaching the airport. Taxis are cheap and abundant. Didi (Chinese Uber) is the ride-hailing app of choice. The metro is the fastest way to most tourist destinations.
Walkability: Good in historic centre and Jinli. Metro + Didi essential for Panda Base and outer attractions.
Hong Kong
Hong Kong has one of the best public transit systems in the world. The MTR (Mass Transit Railway) is fast, clean, and covers most of the territory. Buses, trams, ferries, and minibuses fill the gaps. An Octopus Card is essential — it works on virtually all transport, plus convenience stores and restaurants.
Walkability: Hong Kong is highly walkable in its urban core, though steep hills on Hong Kong Island can be challenging. The Central-Mid-Levels Escalator (800 m, world's longest outdoor covered escalator) helps with elevation. Kowloon's Tsim Sha Tsui and Mong Kok are flat and easily walkable. Covered walkways and air-conditioned pedestrian tunnels connect many buildings.
