How do Beijing and Guilin compare?

Most China itineraries hit Beijing and then debate the southern detour — head to Shanghai for skyline, or south to Guilin for karst landscape. Guilin is the slower, scenic answer and probably the more memorable one. The flight from Beijing Capital to Guilin Liangjiang takes 3h15 on Air China for around $180 round-trip, or you can take a high-speed rail south for about 11 hours and roughly $100. Beijing is the imperial-history capital — Forbidden City's 9,999 rooms, the Great Wall at Mutianyu (less crowded than Badaling) or Jinshanling, Temple of Heaven, hutong bike rides through the old neighborhoods, and Peking duck at Da Dong.

Guilin is the karst landscape that fills every China travel poster — the Li River cruise from Guilin city down to Yangshuo (4 hours, $70), the cormorant fishermen at sunset on bamboo rafts, the Longji terraced rice fields a 2.5-hour bus ride north, and Yangshuo's backpacker village as the actual cycling base. Beijing mid-range runs about $120 a day, Guilin about $95. Best months differ: Beijing peaks in April-May and September-October because winter brings smog and summer brings 35°C heat. Guilin is best April through November, with September the sweet spot — green rice terraces before harvest, manageable heat, and clear skies for the Li River.

These two pair well as a 10-day arc with internal flights — four Beijing nights, fly south, four Guilin nights split between the city and Yangshuo. The transit is straightforward and the contrast is the entire point. Pro tip: skip the official Li River cruise from Zhujiang dock and take a smaller bamboo raft from Yangdi to Xingping instead — the four-hour mass cruise stops far short of the famous 20-yuan-note view, but a private raft for $40 puts you right at Xingping's reflection point. Pick Beijing if you want the imperial-history backbone of any China trip. Pick Guilin if you want the karst landscape that locals consider the most beautiful place in the country.
