The headline things to do in Kochi
From the Kochi guide β these are the items that anchor a 2-day visit. For the full breakdown, read the Kochi travel guide.
- Chinese Fishing Nets at Vasco da Gama Square β Fort Kochi
The iconic cantilevered shore-operated lift nets along the Fort Kochi waterfront, introduced by Chinese traders in the 14th or 15th century. Each net is operated by a team of four to six fishermen who lower it into the water for a few minutes at a time. Best photographed at sunset, with the silhouettes against the Arabian Sea.
- St Francis Church β Fort Kochi
The 1503 Portuguese-built church and the oldest European church in India. Vasco da Gama died in Kochi in 1524 and was buried inside the church for 14 years before his remains were moved to Lisbon. The original gravestone is still set into the floor near the altar.
- Mattancherry Palace (Dutch Palace) β Mattancherry
A two-storey Portuguese palace gifted to the Cochin Raja in 1555, later renovated by the Dutch in 1663 - hence the misnomer "Dutch Palace." The interior holds 17th-century murals depicting scenes from the Ramayana and Krishna Leela in vivid Kerala-style narrative panels covering 300 square metres.
- Paradesi Synagogue & Jew Town β Mattancherry
The 1568 synagogue in the heart of Jew Town, with hand-painted Cantonese floor tiles (each one different), a Belgian glass chandelier, and Hebrew scrolls. The surrounding lanes are lined with antique shops, spice warehouses, and the few remaining Cochin Jewish families.
- Santa Cruz Cathedral Basilica β Fort Kochi
A neo-Gothic Catholic cathedral originally founded by the Portuguese in 1505, demolished by the British in 1795, and rebuilt in its current form in 1905. The pastel pink-and-white interior with frescoes by Italian artist Antonio Moscheni is considered one of the most beautiful church interiors in India.
- Kerala Folklore Museum β Thevara, Ernakulam
A privately built three-storey museum in Thevara, modelled on a Kerala traditional house, holding over 4,000 artefacts of Kerala folk and ritual culture - Theyyam masks, Kathakali costumes, ritual lamps, wood carvings, and a working performance space on the top floor.
- Kathakali performance at Kerala Kathakali Centre β Fort Kochi
Nightly classical Kerala dance-drama performances in Fort Kochi with on-stage make-up application visible from 5pm and the show running 6pm to 8pm. Sit close to see the elaborate facial expressions (mudras) that drive the storytelling.
- Alleppey Backwater Houseboat (day trip) β Alleppey, 53 km south
The standard launching point for Kerala's backwater houseboats is Alleppey (Alappuzha), 90 minutes south by road. Day-cruise houseboats run lunch trips from 11am to 5pm; overnight houseboats include dinner, breakfast, and sleeping cabins. Book through your Kochi hotel for the best rates.
Frequently asked
Is 2 days enough in Kochi?
2 days is the minimum for a satisfying visit β you'll see the headline sights but won't have flex time. If you can stretch to 4, you unlock a day trip and the food walks that make the trip memorable.
Is 6 days too long in Kochi?
6 days is for travellers who want to slow down β eat at neighbourhood spots tourists don't reach, take repeat day trips, and live in the city. If you're a tick-the-list traveller, 4 is enough.
What's the ideal trip length for first-time visitors to Kochi?
4 days is the sweet spot for a first visit β long enough to cover the must-sees, eat at three good spots, take one day trip, and not feel like you're racing a checklist. Less than 2 usually feels rushed; more than 6 is into slow-travel territory.
Should I add Kochi to a longer regional trip?
Yes β Kochi works well as a 2-4-day stop on a longer regional itinerary. Pair it with a nearby destination via the trip planner so the transit days don't compress your time on the ground.
