Hua Hin is the original Thai royal beach town, picked by King Rama VII for the Klai Kangwon summer palace in 1926 and treated ever since as Bangkok’s long-weekend coast. It sits 200 kilometres south of the capital on the Gulf of Thailand, a 3-hour drive or train ride that ends at a teakwood station with red and yellow gables. The five-kilometre town beach runs south to a clifftop temple at Khao Takiab, and the Cicada and Tamarind night markets on weekends draw the crowd that flies in for golf. Phraya Nakhon Cave, an hour south, hides the Kuha Karuhas pavilion built for King Rama V in 1890. Thailand’s golf capital, eight courses inside city limits.

Hua Hin became Thailand's royal beach town in 1926 when King Rama VII (Prajadhipok) commissioned the Klai Kangwon ("Far From Worries") summer palace at the north end of the beach — the palace remains a working royal residence and the current Thai king still spends weeks there each year
The town sits 200 km south of Bangkok on the western shore of the Gulf of Thailand — a 3-hour drive or 4-hour train ride that ends at the historic Hua Hin Railway Station, a 1926 teakwood structure with red and yellow gables that is itself a tourist attraction
The main town beach runs 5 km south from the fishing pier to the clifftop temple at Khao Takiap, a "chopstick mountain" headland topped with a temple complex and a resident colony of macaque monkeys
Phraya Nakhon Cave, an hour south in Khao Sam Roi Yot National Park, hides the Kuha Karuhas pavilion built for King Rama V in 1890 — the pavilion sits in a vast cave chamber where a hole in the cave roof drops a beam of sunlight onto the gold-roofed structure mid-morning
Hua Hin is Thailand's golf capital with 8 courses inside the city limits and another dozen within 30 minutes — the courses host the annual Hua Hin International Golf Festival in September with green fees discounted up to 50%
The Cicada Market on Friday-Sunday evenings draws the largest weekend art-and-craft crowd in southern Thailand, with live music, gallery shopping, and food stalls running 4pm to 11pm
The Hua Hin night-market scene is particularly strong — Cicada (art-focused), Tamarind (mid-range food and crafts), and the Hua Hin Night Market on Dechanuchit Road (street food and seafood) form a Friday-Sunday triangle that defines the town's evening rhythm
Top Sights
Hua Hin Beach
🏖️The five-kilometre town beach running south from the fishing pier, with soft tan sand, gentle waves, and shallow water. Beach loungers from ฿100 per day; horseback rides along the sand from ฿800 per hour. Cleaner and quieter at the southern end near Khao Takiap. Strong winds make it Thailand's best kitesurfing beach November-March.
Hua Hin Railway Station
📌The 1926 teakwood station with red and yellow gables, dragon-tail eaves, and a separate royal waiting pavilion built for King Rama VII. Still a working station with several daily trains to Bangkok. Free to wander; the platforms are quiet between train arrivals. The most photographed spot in Hua Hin after Phraya Nakhon Cave.
Phraya Nakhon Cave
🌿An hour south in Khao Sam Roi Yot National Park, this vast cave chamber holds the gold-roofed Kuha Karuhas pavilion built for King Rama V in 1890. A hole in the cave roof drops a beam of sunlight onto the pavilion roughly 10am-11am for the famous "shaft of light" photograph. Reach by 30-min boat from Bang Pu beach plus 430-step climb. ฿200 park entry.
Cicada Night Market
🏪Hua Hin's flagship Friday-Sunday market, focused on art, design, handicrafts, and live music rather than mass-produced souvenirs. Galleries sell painting, ceramics, jewellery, and Thai-designer clothing. A 200-stall food court runs central. 4pm-11pm. South of town near the Hyatt Regency.
Khao Takiap (Monkey Mountain)
🏯The clifftop temple at the southern end of Hua Hin Beach, with a 20-metre standing Buddha and panoramic views of the bay. A resident colony of about 200 macaque monkeys lives on the slopes; do not bring food or water bottles in your hands. Free entry. 200-step climb from the parking area.
Klai Kangwon Palace Grounds
📌The royal summer residence built in 1926 by King Rama VII. The palace itself is closed to public when royalty is in residence (signposted), but the grounds and beach in front of the palace are sometimes open to walking visitors. Smart-casual dress required. Closed dates posted at the gate; ask at your hotel.
Hua Hin Hills Vineyard
📌A working vineyard 45 minutes inland from Hua Hin, producing tropical-climate wines from Shiraz, Chenin Blanc, and Colombard grapes. Vineyard tours, wine tastings, and a hilltop restaurant with views over the rice paddies. ฿700-1,200 per person for tour-and-tasting packages. Pre-book transport.
Maruekhathaiyawan Palace
📌A teakwood seaside palace built in 1923 by King Rama VI as a "Palace of Love and Hope," painted pale yellow and connected by airy walkways. ฿30 entry. Smart dress required (long trousers/skirt, no sleeveless tops). Located 10 km north of Hua Hin; the most beautiful royal teakwood structure in Thailand.
Off the Beaten Path
Sunrise at Phraya Nakhon Cave
The famous sun-shaft-on-pavilion view requires you to be in the cave between roughly 10am and 11am — meaning a 6am departure from Hua Hin to catch the first park boat at 8am. Pre-arrange transport the day before through your hotel; the trip pays for itself with the unobstructed photo nobody who arrives at 11am will get.
The shaft of sunlight only hits the pavilion for about 30 minutes a day and only on clear days. Most tour operators schedule arrivals at 10:30am-11am, which is exactly when the crowd peaks; arriving at 9:30am gives you the empty cave for the first 30 minutes of light.
Saturday Morning at the Hua Hin Fishing Pier
The fishing pier at the north end of Hua Hin Beach unloads catch from 5am to about 9am every day, peaking on Saturday and Sunday mornings. The pier-side cafes serve fresh squid, whole grilled fish, and Thai breakfast for ฿80-200 — cheaper than any tourist restaurant and the seafood is hours, not days, off the boat.
Hua Hin started life as a Thai fishing village and the pier is still where the actual catch lands. Eating there at sunrise is the closest you can get to the original town, twenty steps from the boats.
Wat Khao Tao Beach
A small temple complex on a beach 12 km south of Hua Hin, with a row of saffron-robed Buddha statues facing the Gulf, a giant gold reclining Buddha, and a quiet beach almost no foreign tourists know about. Free entry. Best at sunrise or 4pm onwards. Songthaew from town ฿30-50; taxi ฿200-300.
The gold reclining Buddha at Wat Khao Tao is enormous and on its own quiet beach — it's the unhyped southern Hua Hin counterpart to Khao Takiap with none of the monkey-grab risk and almost no other visitors.
Tamarind Market on Friday Night
A smaller, more food-focused alternative to Cicada Market just down the road, with 100+ food stalls, live acoustic music, and craft stalls open Friday-Sunday 4pm-11pm. The grilled-river-prawn stalls and the Northern Thai khao soi noodle stand are local favourites. ฿100-200 per person for a full evening of grazing.
Cicada gets the gallery crowd and the tour-bus visitors; Tamarind keeps the local Hua Hin Friday-night crowd who go for the food. The same evening for half the price and double the seafood quality.
Climate & Best Time to Go
Hua Hin sits on the western shore of the Gulf of Thailand and follows a tropical climate with three loose seasons. The cool dry season runs November through February with the most pleasant weather of the year; the hot dry season runs March through May with high humidity and 35°C-plus afternoons; the wet season runs June through October with afternoon storms but lighter rainfall than Phuket or Krabi (the western mountain range shields Hua Hin from the worst of the southwest monsoon).
Cool Dry Season (Peak)
November - February72-88°F
22-31°C
The classic Hua Hin window. Cool mornings, warm dry afternoons, low humidity, and zero rain. Beach weather is ideal and golf courses are at peak condition. Christmas-New Year sees Bangkok day-trippers and weekend rates spike. Kitesurfing season peaks December-February with steady NE winds.
Hot Dry Season
March - May79-97°F
26-36°C
Temperatures climb steadily. April is the hottest month with daily highs above 35°C and high humidity. Songkran (13-15 April) brings water fights to the streets. Beach activities best in early morning and late afternoon. UV index extreme; pack high-SPF sunscreen.
Wet Season
June - October75-91°F
24-33°C
The southwest monsoon brings afternoon storms, but Hua Hin's western mountain range shields it from the heaviest rain. Mornings remain mostly sunny. October is the wettest month. Hotel prices fall 30-40%. Swimming is possible most days outside afternoon storms.
Northeast Monsoon Edge
October - November75-88°F
24-31°C
The transition between southwest and northeast monsoons can bring brief heavy rain to Hua Hin in October and the first half of November. Most years the weather has cleared by mid-November. The November-December crossover marks the start of high-season pricing.
Best Time to Visit
November through February is the cool dry season — perfect beach weather, no rain, and golf at peak condition. March through May is hot dry. June through October is wet but Hua Hin gets less rain than Phuket and remains beach-able most days. Kitesurfing peaks December-February.

Safety Breakdown
Very Safe
out of 100
Hua Hin is one of Thailand's safest beach towns — long-established as a royal residence and dominated by upscale, family-oriented tourism. Foreign visitors report essentially no street crime risk and most stays are uneventful. The main hazards are traffic on the highway south to Pranburi, monkey encounters at Khao Takiap, jellyfish during monsoon, and standard heat exhaustion. Solo female travellers report feeling safe day and night across the entire town.
Things to Know
- •At Khao Takiap do not bring food, water bottles, or unsecured plastic bags — the macaques will grab; remove eyeglasses if a monkey approaches and do not run
- •Box jellyfish appear occasionally during monsoon (May-October); local pharmacies sell vinegar wash. Stings are rare in Hua Hin but can be serious
- •Highway 4 south to Pranburi has fast-moving long-distance traffic — be cautious if cycling or crossing on foot
- •Renting a motorbike is common and risky — Thailand has one of the world's highest road-fatality rates and your travel insurance probably excludes you without an international license endorsement
- •Be wary of "reduced fare" jet-ski operators on the beach who claim damage at the end of the rental — use only registered operators on the central beach with clear price signs
- •Beach loungers are unattended — use hotel safes for valuables and bring only what you need to the beach
- •Sunburn is severe — UV at this latitude is intense even on overcast days; SPF 50+ and a hat are sensible for full-day beach time
- •Late-evening walking on the unlit dirt roads behind the southern beach hotels is best avoided — stick to the well-lit beach road and main town streets

💡 Money-Saving Tips
- •Eat at the Hua Hin Night Market or Tamarind Market rather than the beachfront tourist restaurants — same Thai dishes for half the price
- •Use songthaews instead of taxis or tuk-tuks — ฿15-30 versus ฿80-300 for short hops along the beach road
- •Stay in town centre rather than beachfront — accommodation is 30-50% cheaper and the beach is 5-10 min walk
- •Visit during May-October wet season for 30-40% off accommodation — Hua Hin gets less rain than Phuket and most days are still beach-able
- •Book Cicada Market visits on Friday rather than Sunday — same vendors, half the crowd
- •Skip the BluPort cinema and small cinemas at the malls; the new IMAX in Bangkok is better and you're heading there anyway
- •Buy beer and water from 7-Eleven rather than from beachfront bars — ฿35-50 versus ฿100-200
- •Take the train rather than minivan to Bangkok — the journey is longer (4 hr vs 3.5 hr) but the carriage views and the historic Hua Hin station departure are part of the experience
Thai Baht
Code: THB
1 THB is approximately 0.03 USD (35 THB to 1 USD as of early 2026). ATMs are common across town and along the beach road; foreign card fees are ฿220 per withdrawal. Exchange booths in town offer competitive rates — Super Rich on Petchkasem Road typically beats hotel and airport exchange. USD cash is sometimes accepted at upscale resorts but at poor rates. Carry smaller bills (฿20, ฿50, ฿100) for songthaew fares, market food, and tipping.
Payment Methods
Credit cards are widely accepted at hotels, restaurants, and shops in tourist areas — Visa and Mastercard everywhere, AmEx less common. Markets, street food, songthaews, and small cafes are cash only. ATMs are abundant. Carry ฿1,000-2,000 in cash for daily street food, market shopping, and transport. The fishing pier morning market and Khao Takiap are cash-only.
Tipping Guide
Not traditionally expected but appreciated. Ten percent is generous at tourist restaurants. Most upscale resorts add a 10% service charge automatically.
No tip expected. Rounding up small change is fine.
฿100-200 per hour for traditional Thai massage at street shops; ฿200-400 at hotel spas. Hua Hin has Thailand's densest concentration of spa resorts; tipping is widespread.
฿20-50 per bag for porters; ฿50-100 per night for housekeeping at mid-range and above; ฿100+ at luxury resorts. Concierge tips ฿200-500 for restaurant bookings or activity arrangements.
฿200-400 per person for a full-day Phraya Nakhon Cave or vineyard tour. Group day-tour guides expect ฿100-200 per person.
Not expected on standard fixed-rate fares. ฿20-50 tip for a longer tuk-tuk hire is appreciated.
Tipping caddies is standard — ฿300-500 for an 18-hole round. Many courses include caddy fees in the rate but tips are still expected.
How to Get There
✈️ Airports
Hua Hin Airport(HHQ)
10 km north of townA small regional airport with limited domestic service from Bangkok and Chiang Mai (3-5 flights weekly on small turboprop aircraft). Taxi to town centre 15 min for ฿250-400. Most visitors use BKK or DMK in Bangkok rather than fly into HHQ.
✈️ Search flights to HHQBangkok Suvarnabhumi (international gateway)(BKK)
230 km north of Hua HinSuvarnabhumi to Hua Hin 3-3.5 hr by pre-arranged transfer (฿2,500-3,500) or taxi (฿2,800-3,500). Public transport requires Airport Rail Link to Bangkok then minivan/train to Hua Hin (4.5-5 hr total, ฿300-500). Most travellers pre-book a private transfer.
✈️ Search flights to BKK🚆 Rail Stations
Hua Hin Railway Station
Town centre, 5-min walk to beachThe famous 1926 teakwood station with red and yellow gables, with daily trains to Bangkok's Hua Lamphong (4 hr, ฿250-1,500), south to Surat Thani (8-10 hr, for Koh Samui ferry connection), and connecting trains to Malaysia. The royal waiting pavilion is beside the main building. Limited daily services; book ahead at peak holidays.
Hua Lamphong (Bangkok)
The Bangkok terminus and the main departure for trains to Hua Hin. 6-8 daily departures take 4 hr; the new SRT class trains have aircon and reserved seats from ฿250-450. Buy tickets at the counter or via the SRT app.
🚌 Bus Terminals
Hua Hin Bus Terminal
Located 2 km west of the town centre. Minivan services to Bangkok's Mo Chit and Sai Tai Mai terminals run every 30 min from 5am to 9pm (3.5 hr, ฿280-350). Long-distance buses to Surat Thani, Krabi, and Phuket. Songthaew to town centre ฿30-50.
Getting Around
Hua Hin is a long, narrow town strung along the beach road and Highway 4 inland. There is no public bus inside the town; songthaews (shared pickup taxis) run fixed routes for ฿15-30, and tuk-tuks and metered taxis handle longer trips. The town is too long to walk end-to-end (about 8 km from Klai Kangwon north to Khao Takiap south), but individual neighbourhoods are walkable. Many travellers rent a scooter for the south-coast day trips.
Songthaew
฿15-100 (~$0.40-3) per ridePickup-truck shared taxis run fixed routes along the beach road and Petchkasem Highway. Standard fare ฿15-30 in town, ฿50-100 to Khao Takiap or Cha-Am. Drivers stop on signal and you pay the driver through the cab window when you alight. Most useful daytime transport.
Best for: In-town transit, Khao Takiap day trips, Cha-Am hops
Metered Taxi & Grab
฿80-300 (~$2.30-9) per ride in townMetered taxis are common and fares run ฿80-300 within town. Grab (rideshare app) works in Hua Hin and is often the easiest choice for hotel pickups. Fixed-rate taxis at the train station and major hotels are more expensive than metered.
Best for: Hotel pickups, restaurant dinners, rainy-day transit
Tuk-Tuk
฿80-200 (~$2.30-6) per ride in townBrightly painted tuk-tuks are tourist-oriented and 50-100% more expensive than songthaews. Negotiate the fare before boarding. ฿80-200 within town. Useful for luggage runs from train station to beach hotels.
Best for: Luggage transfers, short tourist hops with negotiation
Motorbike Rental
฿200-300 (~$6-9) per dayScooter rentals from many shops on the beach road for ฿200-300 per day, ฿1,200-1,800 per week. Helmet included. Useful for south-coast day trips to Pranburi, Khao Sam Roi Yot, and Wat Khao Tao. International driving license required by law.
Best for: South-coast exploration, Pranburi, Khao Sam Roi Yot day trips
Walking
FreeThe beach road from the fishing pier south to the Hilton is walkable in 30 minutes; the entire 8 km stretch from Klai Kangwon to Khao Takiap is too long for most. Within neighbourhoods (town centre, central beach, Cicada Market area) walking is the most efficient choice. Use songthaew or taxi between neighbourhoods.
Best for: Within town centre, beach road strolls, market hops
Walkability
The town centre around the train station and the fishing pier is walkable in 15-20 minutes; the central beach hotel strip from Hilton to Hyatt is another 15 minutes. End-to-end town (Klai Kangwon to Khao Takiap) is 8 km and requires transport. Cicada and Tamarind night markets are 4 km south of town centre — songthaew or taxi.

Visa on Arrival
Tips
- •Keep your TM.6 departure card stapled in your passport — required when leaving Thailand
- •Hua Hin has no immigration office — extensions require a Bangkok day trip to Chaeng Wattana
- •For stays longer than 60 days, apply for a 60-day tourist visa at a Thai embassy before travel, or consider the Destination Thailand Visa (DTV) for remote workers
- •Dress smart-casual at Klai Kangwon Palace grounds and Maruekhathaiyawan Palace — long trousers/skirt, no sleeveless tops
- •Shoes off when entering the inner viharn at Khao Takiap and any working temple; outdoor temple grounds do not require shoe removal
Shopping
Hua Hin shopping spans three distinct categories: night markets (Cicada for art/design, Tamarind for food, Hua Hin Night Market for street food and seafood), modern malls (BluPort Hua Hin and Market Village for international brands and aircon retreat from the heat), and the traditional fishing pier morning market for fresh seafood. Cicada is the standout — Friday-Sunday only, art-and-design focused, and unlike anything else in southern Thailand.
Cicada Market
art and design night marketHua Hin's flagship Friday-Sunday market focused on art, design, handicrafts, and live music. Galleries sell painting, ceramics, jewellery, and Thai-designer clothing. A 200-stall food court runs central. Open 4pm-11pm. South of town near the Hyatt Regency.
Known for: Original art, Thai-designer clothing, ceramics, live music, indie film screenings
Tamarind Market
food night marketA smaller food-focused market just down the road from Cicada, with 100+ food stalls, live acoustic music, and craft stalls. Open Friday-Sunday 4pm-11pm. The grilled-river-prawn stalls and the Northern Thai khao soi stand are favourites. Less crowded than Cicada.
Known for: Street food, grilled seafood, khao soi, acoustic live music
Hua Hin Night Market (Dechanuchit Road)
street food marketThe town centre night market runs nightly along Dechanuchit Road from 6pm to midnight. Pad Thai, grilled seafood, fresh juices, and tourist-priced bars. Cash only. Convenient if you stay in town centre but more touristy than Cicada or Tamarind.
Known for: Pad Thai, grilled seafood, mango sticky rice, late-night drinks
BluPort Hua Hin
shopping mallA modern 6-floor mall on the south side of town with international brands (Uniqlo, Adidas, Marks & Spencer), a cinema, and aircon food court. Useful for rainy days and last-minute shopping. Open 10am-10pm daily.
Known for: International brands, cinema, aircon retreat, food court
Hua Hin Fishing Pier Morning Market
fish marketThe fishing pier at the north end of town unloads catch from 5am-9am daily, with morning seafood vendors selling fresh squid, snapper, prawns, and crab from 5am-10am. Pier-side cafes serve fresh-grilled breakfasts. Best on Saturday and Sunday mornings.
Known for: Fresh-off-the-boat seafood, sunrise grilled breakfast

Language & Phrases
Thai has five tones — the same word spoken with a different pitch can mean something different. English is widely spoken at hotels, restaurants, and golf clubs in Hua Hin given the heavy international tourism; less so at street stalls and the fishing pier. Adding "kha" (female speaker) or "khrap" (male speaker) to the end of sentences softens any phrase and shows respect.
