Praia do Sancho, accessed by a steep ladder down a cliff face, is consistently rated the world's best beach. Baia dos Golfinhos hosts the largest known resident colony of spinner dolphins on Earth, who arrive every dawn to rest after night feeding.

🌋

Fernando de Noronha is a 21-island volcanic archipelago lying 350 km off the northeastern coast of Brazil, halfway to Africa

🚦

The Brazilian government caps the visitor population on the main island at 470 people at any one time, enforced via a daily environmental preservation fee (TPA)

🥇

Praia do Sancho is consistently rated the world's best beach by TripAdvisor and Flight Network - access is via a steep iron ladder bolted into the cliff face

🐬

Baia dos Golfinhos shelters the largest known resident colony of spinner dolphins on Earth - they arrive every dawn to rest after night feeding offshore

🌊

The entire archipelago became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2001 alongside the Atol das Rocas, recognised as the most important reproductive habitat for sea life in the South Atlantic

🏡

There is no all-inclusive resort. All accommodation is in pousadas (small inns) on the main island, and many run by families who have been on Noronha for generations

Off the Beaten Path

Praia do Cachorro at low tide

A small black-rock beach below Vila dos Remedios with natural tide pools that fill at low tide. Locals come here for sundowners with the village above and the ocean roaring beyond. Look for the natural sea-pool known as the "jacuzzi".

Free, walkable from Vila, and you can sit alone with a cold beer in a natural Atlantic infinity pool at sunset.

Vila dos Remedios

Sunset at Forte de Sao Pedro do Boldro

A small ruined fort on the cliff above Baia do Boldro with the single best sunset on the island - Morro do Pico in silhouette, dolphins surfacing offshore. Most visitors go to the Forte dos Remedios; this one is quieter.

Locals' sunset spot. Bring a beer, sit on a wall, watch Morro do Pico turn orange.

Baia do Boldro

Cacimba do Padre at Surf Season

A long beach with twin offshore rock formations called the Dois Irmaos. From December to March, when the swell arrives, this is the best surf wave in Brazil and hosts the WSL world tour.

Almost empty outside surf season; world-class wave and pro surf event when the swell hits.

Western coast

Mergulho com Tubaroes (shark snorkel/dive)

Divers and intermediate snorkellers can see lemon, nurse, and reef sharks year-round at Caieira and Pedras Secas. Daily Atlantis dive shop trips. Even on snorkel trips you will see them at the surface.

Routine, safe shark encounters in clear water - the only Brazilian shark dive of this calibre.

Multiple dive sites

Restaurante Mergulhao

A casual oceanfront restaurant on Praia do Porto serving the catch of the day, ceviche, and the famous moqueca de peixe with a seat about 10 m from the breaking surf.

The freshest fish on the island in the most relaxed setting. Reservations essential in season.

Climate & Best Time to Go

Noronha sits 4 degrees south of the equator and has a tropical climate with two distinct seasons: a wet season from February to July (heavy short rains) and a dry season from August to January (clear skies). Sea temperature stays between 26 and 29 C year-round. Surf season (Dec-Mar) and dry-season visibility (Aug-Dec) are the two windows to choose between.

Dry season

August - January

75-86 F

24-30 C

Rain: 0-30 mm/month

Sunny, clear skies, calm seas, best underwater visibility (up to 50 m). The peak diving and snorkelling season. The Brazilian summer holidays (Dec-Feb) bring the highest demand.

Surf season

December - March

77-86 F

25-30 C

Rain: Variable (overlap with wet)

Long-period north Atlantic swells produce the best surfing waves in Brazil at Cacimba do Padre, Boldro, and Cacimba. WSL pro surf events happen in this window.

Wet season

February - July

73-82 F

23-28 C

Rain: 100-300 mm/month

Short heavy tropical rains, often clearing within an hour. The island turns vivid green. Visibility for diving drops to 20-30 m. Lower visitor numbers and rates.

Rain: Variable

Hawksbill and green sea turtles nest on Praia do Leao and Praia do Sueste. Hatchings begin in February. ICMBio runs free evening turtle-nesting watching tours.

Best Time to Visit

August to December for the dry season - clear skies, calm seas, peak underwater visibility (up to 50 m). December to March for surfers chasing the north Atlantic swell. Avoid Brazilian school holidays (Dec 20-Feb 10, July) when prices peak and the visitor cap means flights book months ahead.

Dry & calm (August - November)

Crowds: Moderate

The connoisseur's window - sunny, clear, calm, with the year's best diving visibility. Crowds and prices reasonable. Sea temperature 26-27 C.

Pros

  • + Best underwater visibility (40-50 m)
  • + Calmest seas for boat tours
  • + Stable sunny weather
  • + Fewer crowds than holiday season

Cons

  • No surf swell
  • Some sea turtles already nested
  • Pousada rates climbing toward December

Surf & sun (December - March)

Crowds: High - peak Brazilian holidays

Brazilian summer holiday season - peak demand, peak prices. Surf at Cacimba do Padre is world-class. Sea turtle hatchings begin in Feb.

Pros

  • + World-class surf at Cacimba do Padre
  • + Sea turtle hatchings begin
  • + Long sunny days
  • + WSL surf events

Cons

  • Peak pousada rates
  • Visitor cap means flights book 4-6 months ahead

  • + Hatchings on the beach
  • + Conservation activities open to visitors

Cons

  • Some beach access restricted around nests
  • Cannot photograph with flash

Late January - February

World Surf League pro tour event at Cacimba do Padre. Limited spectator access. The wave can hit 4-5 m on the right swell.

Festival do Vento Sul

September

A small local music and culture festival celebrating the south wind season - traditional Pernambuco music, food, and capoeira on the beach.

Festa de Sao Pedro dos Pescadores

June 29

Very Safe

out of 100

Noronha is one of the safest destinations in Brazil. The 470-visitor cap and small island population (around 3,100 residents) mean crime is essentially absent - no muggings, almost no theft, no nighttime risk. The real hazards are sea-related: strong currents off some beaches, sea urchins on volcanic rocks, and the steep ladder access to Sancho.

Things to Know

  • Always swim where ICMBio rangers and local guides advise - currents off Cachorro, Atalaia, and Bode are dangerous in any swell
  • The Sancho Beach ladder requires both hands free - leave your bag with the cliff-top guard, descend slowly, do not attempt with vertigo
  • Wear water shoes on volcanic rock at Atalaia and Cachorro - sea urchins are common
  • Stay on the marked boardwalks above Baia dos Golfinhos - the cliffs are crumbling and signage is in Portuguese only
  • Stick to ICMBio permits and posted entry windows - rangers do enforce, and overstaying carries fines
  • Bring all medications - the island has only a basic clinic; emergencies fly to Recife

Natural Hazards

⚠️ Strong rip currents off the windward (eastern) coast year-round⚠️ Sea urchins on volcanic rock at Atalaia, Cachorro, Pedras Secas⚠️ Wet-season tropical squalls can be sudden and intense - shelter and wait 30 minutes⚠️ Sun is intense year-round at 4 degrees south - reef-safe SPF 50+ is essential⚠️ Reef sharks are present and rarely aggressive - ICMBio confirms zero incidents in decades

💡 Money-Saving Tips

  • Visit during the wet season (Feb-Jul) for 30-40% cheaper pousadas - rains are short and the island is greener
  • Use the free public bus (or BRL 1-3 token) instead of a buggy if budget is tight
  • Pack picnic lunches from Vila for beach days - restaurant lunches at the beach are 2-3x more expensive
  • Book pousadas direct (not through booking sites) for better rates
  • Combine beach access with the boardwalk between Mirante do Sancho and Mirante dos Golfinhos - both are free with park entry
  • Praia do Cachorro, Praia do Meio, and Praia da Conceicao are walkable from Vila and free
  • Sunset at Forte de Sao Pedro do Boldro is a free island ritual
  • Stock dry goods (snacks, water) on the supermarket day - prices are island-inflated
💴

Brazilian Real

Code: BRL

1 USD is approximately 5.4 BRL as of early 2026. There is a single ATM in Vila dos Remedios (Banco do Brasil) - bring extra cash or a card with no foreign-transaction fee. Almost everywhere accepts cards now, including pousadas, restaurants, and dive shops.

Payment Methods

Cards (Visa, Mastercard) accepted nearly everywhere. Pix (the Brazilian instant-pay system) is universal but requires a Brazilian bank account. Carry BRL 200-400 cash for the bus, small purchases, and the few cash-only spots.

Tipping Guide

Restaurants

10% service charge (taxa de servico) is usually added to the bill - it is optional but customary to leave it.

Pousadas

No tipping expected at the pousada, but BRL 10-30 to cleaning staff at the end of the stay is appreciated.

Dive guides

BRL 30-50 per diver after a successful day is appropriate.

ICMBio guides at Atalaia

These are park rangers, not tipped.

Buggy rental drivers

No tip expected.

How to Get There

✈️ Airports

Fernando de Noronha Airport(FEN)

4 km from Vila dos Remedios

Pousada transfers (often included), taxi BRL 30-50, or the public bus that loops the island. Two airlines fly daily: Azul direct from Recife (1 hr 20 min) and GOL/Voepass direct from Recife or Natal (1 hr-1 hr 20 min). No international flights.

✈️ Search flights to FEN
§08

Getting Around

The main island is just 17 km2 - small enough that buggies, bikes, and one main road can cover everything. There is one circular road (BR-363), a few smaller branches, and one local bus that runs the full length every 30 minutes. Most visitors rent a buggy or hire a guided 4WD tour. No Uber operates.

🚀

Buggy or compact 4WD rental

BRL 350-600/day buggy; BRL 500-900/day 4WD

The standard way to get around. Open-sided beach buggies are the local favourite. Several rental agencies in Vila dos Remedios; book ahead in high season.

Best for: Independent exploration of the western beaches and viewpoints

🚌

Linha de Onibus (local bus)

Free / BRL 1-3 token

A single yellow public bus loops the island every 30-40 minutes from 5 AM to 10 PM, stopping at every major beach. Free or token charge.

Best for: Budget travel, late-evening returns, no-buggy days

🚕

Local taxis

BRL 30-80 between most points; BRL 150 for an island circuit

A small fleet of 4WD taxis. Negotiate the fare before getting in - rates are higher than the mainland because everything must be flown in.

Best for: Late-night returns, transfers from the airport, no-bus runs

🚀

Ilha Tour 4WD

BRL 200-300 per person

A guided full-day open-sided 4WD tour around the island's viewpoints, beaches, and historical sites. The standard first-day orientation tour.

Best for: First-day orientation, historical context, Portuguese-speaking only locals

🚶

On foot

Free

Vila dos Remedios is fully walkable. The boardwalks at Mirante do Sancho/Golfinhos are walkable. Beaches connect via clifftop paths in the dry season.

Best for: Vila dos Remedios, boardwalk viewpoints, sunset hikes

Walkability

Vila dos Remedios is small and walkable. The clifftop boardwalk between Mirante do Sancho and Mirante dos Golfinhos is the iconic walk on the island. Outside Vila and the boardwalk, distances on foot are long and the equatorial sun makes walking heavy. Most visitors rent a buggy.
