Quick Verdict
Pick Hakone for Lake Ashi pirate-ship loops, sulfur ryokan baths, and kaiseki dinners with Mount Fuji on the skyline. Pick Hiroshima for the A-Bomb Dome's preserved silhouette, the Peace Memorial Museum, and Miyajima's tide-floating torii.
The real difference is price
These two play in different price tiers: Hiroshima runs roughly 53% cheaper day to day ($150 vs $230 per day mid-range). Start with your budget — everything else on this page is secondary to that gap.

How do Hakone and Hiroshima compare?
These are two of the most popular Tokyo follow-ups, but they sit on opposite ends of the trip. Hakone is the one-night onsen exhale 90km southwest of the city — a ryokan with kaiseki dinner, a soak in a sulfur bath while the snow falls, and a Lake Ashi pirate ship loop with Mount Fuji on the horizon if the cloud cover cooperates. Hiroshima is the deeper pilgrimage 800km west — the A-Bomb Dome standing exactly as it did at 8:15 a.m. on August 6, 1945, the Peace Memorial Museum that takes a long quiet morning to absorb, and Miyajima's vermilion torii floating at high tide.
The transit math is the giveaway. The Odakyu Romancecar from Shinjuku to Hakone-Yumoto runs 85 minutes and ¥2,470 (~$16.50) one way — easy overnight. Hiroshima is 4 hours on the Nozomi Shinkansen from Tokyo, around ¥18,000 (~$120) each way without the JR Pass, which makes it a two-night minimum unless you fly into Hiroshima airport directly. Mid-range budgets diverge sharply too: Hakone runs $280/day on ryokan economics (rooms include dinner and breakfast, and the cheapest decent ryokan starts around $200), versus $110/day in Hiroshima where business hotels and okonomiyaki dinners stay reasonable.
Pick Hakone if you want sensory recovery — onsen, kaiseki, mountain air, and a Fuji photo. Pick Hiroshima if you want the weight of 20th-century history and Miyajima's shrine in the same trip. Pro tip: a Hakone Free Pass at ¥6,100 covers the Tozan switchback train, Sounzan ropeway, Owakudani cable car, and Lake Ashi sightseeing boat — buy it before boarding at Shinjuku.

🛡️ Safety
Hakone
Hakone is among the safest travel destinations in the world. Japan's exceptionally low crime rates apply fully here — petty theft, scams, and harassment are vanishingly rare. The primary safety considerations are natural rather than human: volcanic gas at Owakudani can cause periodic closures, earthquakes are a background reality, and the mountain weather can change rapidly. Visitors with tattoos should be aware that most public baths prohibit them, though private in-room baths (kashikiri) are widely available.
Hiroshima
Hiroshima is extremely safe, reflecting Japan's overall reputation as one of the safest countries for travelers. Violent crime is virtually nonexistent, theft is rare, and the city is well-maintained with excellent infrastructure. The biggest risks are natural disasters (typhoons, earthquakes) and heat exhaustion in summer.
🌤️ Weather
Hakone
Hakone has a mountain temperate climate, noticeably cooler and wetter than Tokyo year-round due to its elevation (500-700 m in most resort areas). Summers are pleasantly mild compared to the city's oppressive heat. Winters bring occasional snow and the clearest Mount Fuji views. Autumn foliage (koyo) in November is spectacular. Rainfall is relatively high due to orographic lift from Pacific weather systems — a clear day for Fuji views is genuinely special and not guaranteed.
Hiroshima
Hiroshima has a humid subtropical climate with four distinct seasons. Summers are hot and humid, winters are mild compared to northern Japan, and spring cherry blossoms and autumn foliage are spectacular. The rainy season (tsuyu) runs from mid-June to mid-July.
🚇 Getting Around
Hakone
The Hakone Free Pass is the essential tool for getting around. A 2-day pass (¥6,100 from Shinjuku including Odakyu round-trip) or 3-day pass (¥6,500) covers virtually all transport within Hakone: the Tozan railway, Tozan cable car, Hakone Ropeway gondola, sightseeing ships on Lake Ashi, and Tozan bus routes. Most visitors plan their itinerary around the classic loop: Hakone-Yumoto → Gora by Tozan train → Sounzan by cable car → Togendai by ropeway → Moto-Hakone by pirate ship → back by bus.
Walkability: Within individual resort towns like Hakone-Yumoto, Gora, and Moto-Hakone, walking is easy and pleasant. The distances between the main attractions of the circuit require the pass-covered transport. The old Tokaido road between Moto-Hakone and Hakone-machi is a beautiful 8 km forest walk along the original Edo-period highway.
Hiroshima
Hiroshima has an extensive streetcar (tram) network — the oldest and largest in Japan — supplemented by buses and a good cycling infrastructure. The tram system connects the station to Peace Park, the castle, and the Miyajima ferry terminal. An IC card (ICOCA/Suica) works on all public transport.
Walkability: Hiroshima is very walkable within the central area. Peace Memorial Park, the Atomic Bomb Dome, Hiroshima Castle, and Shukkeien Garden are all within a 25-minute walk of each other. The flat river delta terrain and well-maintained sidewalks make walking easy. The Hondori shopping arcade provides covered walking in any weather.
