๐Ÿ›ก๏ธ Safety

Guangzhou78/100โœ“Safety Score70/100Madurai

Guangzhou

Guangzhou is generally safe but is a busy commercial city where petty theft is more common than in other Chinese cities. Crowded markets and metro stations require vigilance.

Madurai

Madurai is generally safe for travelers, including solo women. The main concerns are typical of busy South Indian pilgrimage cities: aggressive auto-rickshaw drivers, temple touts, and petty scams near tourist sites. The city is overwhelmingly focused on pilgrimage and is culturally very conservative. Dress modestly around temples.

๐Ÿš‡ Getting Around

Guangzhou

Guangzhou has an excellent and expanding metro system with 16 lines. Combined with affordable taxis and ride-hailing, the city is easy to navigate despite its size.

Walkability: Moderate โ€” the old Liwan and Yuexiu districts are walkable, but the city is large and hot in summer. Metro + walking is the best strategy.

Guangzhou Metro โ€” 2-12 CNY ($0.28-1.65)
Taxis & Didi โ€” 12-60 CNY ($1.65-8)
City Buses โ€” 2 CNY (~$0.28)

Madurai

Madurai's city centre and all major temples are within reasonable distance of each other. Auto-rickshaws are the primary way to get around โ€” expect to negotiate fares as meters are rarely honoured. Ola and Uber both operate and are far more reliable for price transparency. The city is not walkable in summer heat but manageable in cooler months.

Walkability: The area immediately around the Meenakshi Temple โ€” including Puthu Mandapam, the flower market lanes, and the old town bazaars โ€” is walkable and best explored on foot in the early morning or evening. Avoid walking during peak afternoon heat (11 AMโ€“4 PM) between April and June when temperatures regularly exceed 38ยฐC. Streets near the temple are narrow and busy with pilgrims, vendors, and vehicles.

Ola / Uber โ€” INR 80-200 (~$1-2.40 USD) for most city trips
Auto-rickshaws โ€” INR 50-150 (~$0.60-1.80 USD) negotiated
City Buses & SETC Buses โ€” INR 10-30 (~$0.12-0.35 USD) city; INR 250-600 (~$3-7 USD) intercity AC bus

The Verdict

Choose Guangzhou if...

you want Cantonese food's home base โ€” Shamian Island colonial, Canton Tower, Pearl River cruise, dim sum breakfasts, and high-speed rail to Hong Kong in 48 minutes

Choose Madurai if...

you want South India's great temple city โ€” Meenakshi Amman's 33,000-statue gopurams, the 24-hour living temple, Gandhi's assassination dhoti, and South Indian banana-leaf meals at $1.50 that embarrass every restaurant in the world
