How do Flores and Lombok compare?

Flores — a long volcanic spine of an island in Indonesia's Lesser Sundas chain east of Bali, anchored by the harbour town of Labuan Bajo where every Komodo National Park live-aboard and day boat departs, while Lombok — bali's quieter neighbor offers pristine beaches, world-class surf, the challenging Mount Rinjani trek, and the idyllic Gili Islands just offshore. Both sit in Indonesia, yet the country you encounter at each is barely the same place.

Flores has a slight edge on cultural depth. Lombok has a slight edge on nightlife. Lombok is friendlier on the wallet at roughly $60/day mid-range against $85/day for Flores.

Both peak around the same window (May through September), so a single trip can hit each at its best.

🛡️ Safety

Flores72/100Safety Score72/100Lombok

Flores

Flores is one of the safer parts of Indonesia for visitors — low petty crime, almost no scams, predominantly Catholic and very local in feel. Real risks are road crashes on the Trans-Flores highway, dragon encounters when hiking off-trail in Komodo NP, and live-aboard boat fires (multiple incidents 2018-2023). Wear a helmet on any scooter and only book live-aboards with verifiable safety records.

Lombok

Lombok is generally safe but more rural and less touristically developed than Bali. Road conditions, seismic activity, and ocean currents are the main concerns.

🌤️ Weather

Flores

Flores has a tropical monsoon climate with two pronounced seasons — dry from April to October and wet from November to March. Coastal Labuan Bajo is hot and humid year-round (28-32°C); the Bajawa, Ruteng and Moni highlands run 5-8°C cooler and can drop to 12°C overnight in July-August. The Komodo region is among Indonesia's driest, in the rain shadow of the Lesser Sunda chain.

Wet Season (November - March)24-31°C

Lombok

Lombok has a tropical climate with a dry season and a wet season. The dry season (May-October) is the best time to visit for trekking, diving, and beach activities.

🚇 Getting Around

Flores

Flores has no trains and very limited public buses — getting around the island means either hiring a driver-and-car for the Trans-Flores highway, renting a scooter for Labuan Bajo and short hops, or flying the Wings Air island hops. In Labuan Bajo and Maumere, Grab and Gojek work but coverage drops to zero in the highland villages.

Walkability: Labuan Bajo town is a 10-minute walk end to end along the waterfront strip — most dive shops, restaurants and guesthouses cluster on Jl Soekarno-Hatta. Moni village is a single 500-metre street. Outside these compact centres, walking is impractical due to distances and the lack of footpaths on highway shoulders.

Grab / GojekIDR 10,000-50,000 (~$0.65-3.25) for in-town trips
Scooter RentalIDR 80,000-120,000/day (~$5-8)
Hired Car & Driver (Trans-Flores)IDR 5,500,000-8,000,000 for 5 days inc fuel (~$360-525) for car + driver

Lombok

Lombok has limited public transport. Most travelers use motorbike rentals, private drivers, or shared minivans. The Gili Islands are car-free with bikes and walking as the main options.

Walkability: Low for Lombok island itself — distances are large and there are no sidewalks. The Gili Islands are highly walkable (Gili Air can be walked around in 1.5 hours).

Motorbike Rental60,000-80,000 IDR ($3.85-5.15) per day
Private Driver/Car500,000-700,000 IDR ($32-45) per day
Boats to Gili Islands15,000-85,000 IDR ($1-5.50) public boat; 150,000-350,000 IDR ($10-23) fast boat
