Quick Verdict
Pick Essaouira for blue-boat Skala harbour, port-grilled sardines, and ramparts that played Astapor in Game of Thrones. Pick Ouarzazate if Atlas Studios mythology, Ait Benhaddou ksar, and the Sahara launchpad east are why you came.

How do Essaouira and Ouarzazate compare?
Two Moroccan side-trips from Marrakech that pull in opposite directions and cost roughly the same. Essaouira sits on the Atlantic coast 2.5 hours west by Supratours bus — a breezy walled port with Skala fishing harbor full of blue boats, ramparts that played Astapor in Game of Thrones, kitesurfers on the wide bay, and a medina small enough to learn in a morning. Ouarzazate sits in the south 4 hours over the Tizi n'Tichka pass — Africa's Hollywood, with Atlas Studios as the largest film studio on earth by area, the UNESCO ksar of Aït Benhaddou 30km west, and the High Atlas behind you and the Sahara ahead.
Mid-range budgets are essentially level (about 100 USD/day Essaouira, 80 USD/day Ouarzazate). Essaouira wins on food (grilled sardines straight off the boat, argan-oil co-ops in the surrounding villages), atmosphere, and the breeze that keeps the temperature 10°C below Marrakech in summer. Ouarzazate wins on cinema mythology and on positioning — it is the only sensible launch point for a Sahara trip to Merzouga, a 7 to 8-hour drive east through the Dadès and Todra gorges. Both are cheap one-way bus or shared-taxi rides from Marrakech: Supratours runs Essaouira twice daily for 80 MAD; CTM runs Ouarzazate three times daily for 95 MAD.
Essaouira is best April through October when the Alizé wind blows and the medina is alive; Ouarzazate is best March to May or October to November when the desert temperature sits below 30°C. Pro tip: in Essaouira, eat at the row of fish-grill stalls inside the port (not the restaurants on Place Moulay Hassan) — pick your fish from the ice and they cook it in front of you for a third of the price; in Ouarzazate, sleep in Aït Benhaddou itself rather than Ouarzazate town to wake up inside the ksar before the day-trip buses arrive. Pick Essaouira for an Atlantic windswept break. Pick Ouarzazate if you want film history and the gateway to the Sahara.

🛡️ Safety
Essaouira
Essaouira is one of the safest cities in Morocco for tourists. The medina is compact and well-patrolled, and the relaxed atmosphere contrasts sharply with more hectic cities like Marrakech. Hassle from touts and unofficial guides is minimal compared to other Moroccan destinations.
Ouarzazate
Ouarzazate is one of the calmest and safest cities in Morocco. The permanent military and air-force presence, the small population, and the economic role of film tourism all combine to produce a town where petty crime is rare and street harassment is dramatically milder than in Marrakech, Fez, or Tangier. Women traveling alone consistently report an easier experience here than anywhere else in Morocco outside Rabat. The main risks are environmental (heat, dehydration, sun) rather than human.
🌤️ Weather
Essaouira
Essaouira has a mild, Mediterranean-influenced Atlantic climate. Temperatures are moderate year-round (rarely above 30°C or below 10°C), but the persistent trade winds (alizee) define the experience. Wind picks up most afternoons from April to September. Mornings are typically calm.
Ouarzazate
Ouarzazate has a classic pre-Saharan semi-arid climate: extreme summer heat, mild-to-cold winter nights, and almost no rainfall. Summer daytime temperatures regularly clear 40°C; winter nights drop to 2–4°C (occasionally below freezing). The elevation (1,160 m) moderates the heat relative to the Sahara proper — nights are pleasant even in July, and shade is effective. Annual rainfall is around 100 mm, falling mostly in brief, dramatic bursts between November and April.
🚇 Getting Around
Essaouira
Essaouira's medina is entirely walkable — most visitors never need motorized transport within the town. The medina is car-free and compact enough to cross in 15 minutes. For trips outside town (Sidi Kaouki, argan cooperatives), petits taxis or arranged tours are the best options.
Walkability: Essaouira is one of the most walkable destinations in Morocco. The medina is entirely pedestrian, flat, and safe to wander. The beach stretches for kilometers south of the city for long walks. The only reason to use transport is for trips outside town.
Ouarzazate
Ouarzazate is small and mostly walkable — the spine runs along Avenue Mohammed V for about 2 km, connecting Kasbah Taourirt at the centre to Atlas Studios at the western edge. There is no tram, no metro, and no urban bus system of any use to visitors. Petit taxis (blue) handle short hops; grand taxis (shared or hired) handle day trips to Aït Benhaddou, Fint, and Skoura. Renting a car is a common and sensible choice for visitors planning to continue east to Merzouga or north over Tizi n'Tichka.
Walkability: Central Ouarzazate is small and linear — the main avenue is walkable end-to-end. All sights beyond Atlas Studios and the central kasbah require a taxi or private vehicle. Summer heat is the main limiting factor on walking.
