Both peak October-March when the heat is tolerable; both punish you in May-June (45°C in Delhi, 40°C in Madurai) and the July-September monsoon can be either dramatic (south) or filthy (north).

These pair well on a longer 14-day India trip — fly into Delhi for the Golden Triangle (Delhi-Agra-Jaipur) over a week, then catch the 2.5-hour direct IndiGo down to Madurai (around $80 each way) for three or four days deeper south. Pro tip: in Madurai, hire a temple guide at the East Tower for around 500 rupees — the iconography on the gopurams is impossible to read on your own; in Delhi, use the Metro for everything you can and pre-book Uber for the rest, never accept a tuk-tuk meter.
