Quick Verdict
Pick Delhi if Red Fort sandstone, Chandni Chowk paratha smoke, and Humayun's Tomb gardens beat karst-mountain quiet. Pick Guilin if Li River cruises, Yangshuo bamboo rafts, and Longji terrace mornings outweigh Mughal density.

How do Delhi and Guilin compare?
Two Asian destinations that almost no travelers compare directly, but if you've already done Beijing or Mumbai the question is what's next โ and Delhi and Guilin sit at opposite ends of the Asian travel spectrum. Delhi is Mughal-era density: the Red Fort's sandstone walls at sunset, Chandni Chowk's parathe wali gali where the smoke and ghee hit you a block away, Humayun's Tomb gardens, and a metro that's surprisingly clean and goes everywhere. Guilin is karst-mountain serenity โ the Li River cruise from Guilin to Yangshuo where limestone peaks rise straight out of the water, bamboo rafts on the Yulong River, rice-terrace mornings at Longji, and a quiet broken only by water buffalo and bicycle bells.
Mid-range nights are $75 in Delhi versus $95 in Guilin โ Delhi is cheaper but cleanliness is a real factor (a 1/5 rating versus Guilin's 4/5). Delhi wins on cultural sites and cost; Guilin wins on nature, safety, and air quality. Delhi's window is October through March (winter is chilly but smog still bad); Guilin's is April-May and September-November.
Combine on a 5-hour Delhi-Guangzhou flight then 1-hour Guilin connection. For Delhi, hire a Uber-driver day rate at โน2,000; for Guilin, book the Yangshuo bamboo raft at a hotel desk to skip the tourist-trap pricing.

๐ก๏ธ Safety
Delhi
Delhi is generally safe for tourists who take standard precautions. Petty crime (pickpocketing, scams) is the main concern, particularly in crowded tourist areas and on public transport. Solo female travelers should exercise extra caution, especially after dark. The city's traffic is chaotic and dangerous for pedestrians.
Guilin
Guilin and Yangshuo are very safe destinations for tourists โ violent crime is extremely rare in China, the local police presence is high, and the city is well-organized. The main risks are tourist scams (overpriced taxi tours, fake products, "tea ceremony" scams targeted at solo travellers), road accidents on bicycle and scooter rentals, and altitude/heat-related issues at the rice terraces in summer.
๐ค๏ธ Weather
Delhi
Delhi has an extreme climate with scorching summers (April-June), a humid monsoon (July-September), and cool to cold winters (November-February). October-March is the best period for visiting. Summer temperatures regularly exceed 45ยฐC (113ยฐF).
Guilin
Guilin has a humid subtropical climate โ hot, humid summers (May-September), mild damp winters (December-February), and pleasant transitional seasons. The misty conditions that produce the iconic karst photographs are most common in March-May (spring fog) and after rainfall. Year-round destination but spring (April-May) and autumn (September-November) are optimal.
๐ Getting Around
Delhi
Delhi has excellent public transport anchored by the massive Metro system. Auto-rickshaws, ride-hailing apps (Uber and Ola), and cycle rickshaws fill the gaps. Traffic is notoriously congested, especially during rush hours. The Metro is usually the fastest way to get around.
Walkability: Delhi is not a walkable city overall โ distances are vast, sidewalks are often broken or nonexistent, and traffic is aggressive. However, specific areas are great for walking: Old Delhi (Chandni Chowk to Jama Masjid), Connaught Place, Lodhi Garden area, and Hauz Khas Village. Always carry water and sun protection.
Guilin
Guilin has a city bus network and Didi (Chinese ride-hailing app, equivalent to Uber). Yangshuo is small and best explored by bicycle or electric scooter. High-speed rail connects Guilin to Beijing, Shanghai, Hong Kong, and Guangzhou; the Guilin North railway station is 12 km from city centre. The Li River cruise from Guilin to Yangshuo is itself the main inter-city transport for tourists.
Walkability: Yangshuo town is highly walkable โ West Street, the Li River pier, and most accommodation are within 10 minutes on foot. Guilin city centre (Elephant Trunk Hill, Two Rivers Four Lakes scenic area) is walkable but the city is sprawling and reaching outlying attractions like Reed Flute Cave requires transport.
