Bath

Bath is one of the safest cities in England. Violent crime is rare and the city has a well-established, low-crime character sustained by a combination of tourism, university population, and affluent residents. The main concerns are petty theft in busy tourist areas and the occasional weekend night-time nuisance around Milsom Street and Kingsmead Square.

Ljubljana

Ljubljana is one of Europe's safest capital cities. Violent crime is rare, and the compact, walkable old town is genuinely comfortable at any hour. Pickpockets exist in tourist areas and on public buses but are far less prevalent than in larger European capitals. Solo travelers, including women, consistently report feeling very safe. Metelkova Mesto has a deliberately edgy aesthetic but is not genuinely dangerous β€” the community self-polices effectively.

🌀️ Weather

Bath

Bath sits in a sheltered valley in the West of England and has a mild, maritime climate. It is slightly warmer and drier than nearby Bristol. Rain is spread across the year but rarely heavy. The surrounding hills create a microclimate that can feel warmer on sunny days than the coast. Snow is rare and short-lived. Pack a waterproof layer year-round.

Summer (June – August)12–24Β°C
Autumn / Winter (September – February)3–17Β°C

Ljubljana

Ljubljana sits in a basin between the Alps and the Karst plateau, giving it a continental climate with Mediterranean touches. Summers are warm and occasionally hot; winters are cold with fog that settles in the valley for days at a stretch β€” a local phenomenon known as "meglica." Spring and autumn are mild but can be wet. The surrounding mountains mean weather can shift quickly.

πŸš‡ Getting Around

Bath

Bath is compact and highly walkable β€” virtually every major sight is within 20 minutes on foot from Bath Spa station. The city sits in a valley with steep surrounding hills, making cycling challenging for most visitors. First Bus operates the local bus network; a day ticket (Β£5.50) covers unlimited travel. Park-and-Ride sites on the outskirts are strongly recommended for drivers.

Walkability: Bath's historic centre is exceptionally walkable β€” the Roman Baths, Bath Abbey, Pulteney Bridge, and Milsom Street are all within a 10-minute walk of Bath Spa station. The Royal Crescent and The Circus are a 15-20 minute uphill walk. Cobbled streets and steep gradients make sturdy footwear essential. The city is less accessible for wheelchair users in the historic core.

First Bus (Local Services) β€” Β£2.10 single / Β£5.50 day ticket
Park & Ride β€” Β£3.00 return per car (includes driver and up to 5 passengers)
Hackney Carriages & Apps β€” Β£5–12 within city centre

Ljubljana

Ljubljana's old town is almost entirely car-free and supremely walkable β€” the core can be crossed in 15 minutes on foot. For trips further afield within the city, the LPP city bus network is efficient and cheap. The Urbana contactless card covers buses and provides small discounts. The funicular to Ljubljana Castle is a quick and fun way to reach the hilltop. Electric tourist carts (kavalir) ferry visitors through the old town free of charge.

Walkability: Ljubljana is extremely walkable. The historic old town, riverside market, Triple Bridge, Dragon Bridge, PreΕ‘eren Square, and the castle funicular are all within a five-minute walk of each other. Tivoli Park is a ten-minute walk west of the center. Streets are flat in the core (the castle hill aside), well-maintained, and entirely pedestrianized in the old town. Good shoes suffice β€” heels would manage on main streets but cobblestones in quieter lanes can be uneven.

LPP City Bus β€” €1.30 per ride with Urbana card; €5.20 for a day pass
Bicikelj Bike Share β€” First hour free; €1/hour thereafter
Ljubljana Castle Funicular β€” €4 return; €2.50 one way; free with certain castle passes

The Verdict

Choose Bath if...

you want Britain's most elegant small city β€” 2,000-year-old Roman Baths fed by Britain's only hot spring, the Georgian Royal Crescent, Thermae Bath Spa's rooftop pool, and Jane Austen's adopted hometown, all in a UNESCO World Heritage city the size of a village

Choose Ljubljana if...

you want Europe's greenest capital β€” traffic-free cobblestones, Plečnik architecture, and Lake Bled plus the Julian Alps an hour away
