Winters are cold, dark, and snowy, with only 6 hours of daylight in December. The Gulf of Finland regularly freezes in winter, requiring icebreaker ships to keep ferry routes open. Auroras are occasionally visible on clear winter nights north of the city. Spring and autumn are short but beautiful. Pack for rain in any season and extreme cold November through March.

Bath

Bath is compact and highly walkable — virtually every major sight is within 20 minutes on foot from Bath Spa station. The city sits in a valley with steep surrounding hills, making cycling challenging for most visitors. First Bus operates the local bus network; a day ticket (£5.50) covers unlimited travel. Park-and-Ride sites on the outskirts are strongly recommended for drivers.

Walkability: Bath's historic centre is exceptionally walkable — the Roman Baths, Bath Abbey, Pulteney Bridge, and Milsom Street are all within a 10-minute walk of Bath Spa station. The Royal Crescent and The Circus are a 15-20 minute uphill walk. Cobbled streets and steep gradients make sturdy footwear essential. The city is less accessible for wheelchair users in the historic core.

Helsinki

Helsinki has an excellent integrated public transport network operated by HSL (Helsingin Seudun Liikenne), covering metro, trams, buses, local trains, and the ferry to Suomenlinna — all on a single ticketing system. The city center is compact and highly walkable in good weather. Trams are the most useful mode for tourists, running frequently and connecting all the main sights. The metro is useful for longer trips east or west. City Bikes (shared bicycles) are excellent in summer. For winter, the tram and metro keep running regardless of snow.

Walkability: The Helsinki city center peninsula is highly walkable in summer — Senate Square to Market Square to Esplanadi to the Design District is a comfortable 30-minute stroll. In winter, walking is possible but requires proper footwear for icy conditions. Distances between major sights are modest and the flat terrain helps.
