How do Barcelona and Seoul compare?

These are both top-three Asia/Europe city-break destinations, and choosing between them is mostly about pace tolerance — late-night Mediterranean languor or all-night Korean intensity. Barcelona is Catalan-Modernisme density: Sagrada Família's interior light at 11 AM, La Boqueria's $4 jamón cones, La Barceloneta's 9 PM tapas dinners with the Mediterranean breeze, and Park Güell's mosaic benches looking down at the city. Seoul is Korean megacity hyper-modernism — Gyeongbokgung's morning guard ceremony, Bukchon hanok rooftops, Itaewon's 4 AM Korean BBQ rounds, Hongdae's 3 AM live-music scene, and Han River bike paths lit blue all night.

Mid-range budgets favor Seoul at $135 against $180 Barcelona — Korea has gotten cheaper relative to Europe over the past 5 years. Barcelona wins on walkability (5/5 vs 4/4) and food scene at the budget end (you can eat well for $20). Seoul wins on transit (5/5 — possibly the world's best metro), nightlife duration (it never actually closes), and safety (85 vs 65 — Barcelona's pickpocketing on Las Ramblas is real). Cleanliness ties at 4/5.

These don't combine. Time Barcelona for May-June or September (avoid August when locals leave and prices spike); time Seoul for April-May (cherry blossoms at Yeouido) or October (clear skies, no Yellow Dust). Both fly $400-700 from major hubs if booked 6 weeks out.

🛡️ Safety

Barcelona72/100Safety Score88/100Seoul

Barcelona

Barcelona is generally safe but has one of the highest rates of petty theft in Europe. Pickpocketing is rampant in tourist areas, on the metro, and on Las Ramblas. Violent crime against tourists is rare.

Seoul

Seoul is one of the safest major cities in the world. Violent crime against tourists is extremely rare. You can walk through most neighborhoods at any hour with minimal concern. Petty theft is uncommon compared to European cities. The main "risks" are taxi overcharging and the occasional bar scam in Itaewon.

🌤️ Weather

Barcelona

Barcelona has a Mediterranean climate with warm, dry summers and mild, relatively wet winters. The sea moderates temperatures year-round, making extremes rare. The city averages about 2,500 hours of sunshine per year.

Summer (June - August)21-30°C
Autumn (September - November)14-25°C
Winter (December - February)6-14°C

🚇 Getting Around

Barcelona

Barcelona has an excellent public transit network run by TMB (metro and buses) and FGC (regional rail). The T-Casual card offers 10 rides for €11.35 across metro, bus, tram, and FGC within Zone 1. The city is also very walkable and increasingly bike-friendly.

Walkability: The city center is very walkable and mostly flat, with the exception of hilly Montjuic and the areas near Park Guell. Las Ramblas, the Gothic Quarter, El Born, and the waterfront are best explored on foot. The Eixample grid makes navigation intuitive.

TMB Metro€2.40 single; €11.35 for T-Casual (10 rides)
TMB Buses€2.40 single; covered by T-Casual card
Cabify / Uber / Taxi€8-15 for most trips within the city

Seoul

Seoul has one of the world's best public transit systems. The subway is clean, punctual, and covers virtually everywhere you need to go. Get a T-money card (reloadable transit card) at any convenience store for 2,500 KRW and load it up. It works on subways, buses, and even taxis and convenience stores.

Walkability: Seoul is moderately walkable but spread out. The historic core (Jongno, Insadong, Bukchon) is compact and pleasant on foot. Hilly terrain in some neighborhoods (Bukchon, Itaewon) can be tiring. Use the subway to cover distances between districts and walk within them.

Seoul Metro / Subway1,400-2,500 KRW (~$1.05-1.85) depending on distance with T-money
Seoul City Buses1,200-2,500 KRW (~$0.90-1.85) with T-money; free transfers within 30 min
