Algarve

The Algarve is one of the safest tourist destinations in Europe. Violent crime is extremely rare and petty theft is the primary concern โ€” primarily pickpocketing at crowded beach car parks and tourist restaurants. Portugal consistently ranks in the top 5 of the Global Peace Index. Solo female travellers generally find it very comfortable.

Tuscany

Tuscany is one of the safest regions in Italy and Europe. Violent crime is very rare. The main risks for travelers are petty theft in crowded tourist areas of Florence, particularly around the Duomo, train stations, and on buses.

๐ŸŒค๏ธ Weather

Algarve

The Algarve has the sunniest climate in continental Europe โ€” 300 days of sunshine annually, warm dry summers, and mild winters. The sea is warm enough for swimming from May through October (17-24ยฐC). The western Algarve around Sagres and Lagos receives more Atlantic wind and cooler temperatures than the sheltered eastern Algarve around Tavira.

High Summer (June - September)25-35ยฐC
Shoulder Season (April - May & October)18-27ยฐC
Winter (November - March)12-18ยฐC

Tuscany

Tuscany has a Mediterranean climate with hot, dry summers and mild, wet winters. Inland areas like Florence can be significantly hotter than the coast in summer. The hills and valleys create microclimates ideal for winemaking.

๐Ÿš‡ Getting Around

Algarve

A rental car is the most practical way to explore the Algarve โ€” the coast and inland areas are spread over 200km east-to-west, and many of the best beaches and villages are only accessible by car. The IP1/EN125 main coastal road links all major towns. Public buses (Eva Transportes) connect coastal towns adequately, and the Faro-Lagos/Faro-Tavira rail line is useful for town-to-town travel.

Walkability: Individual towns โ€” Lagos Old Town, Tavira, Silves, and central Faro โ€” are pleasant and very walkable on foot. The Fishermen's Trail (Trilho dos Pescadores) is a superb multi-day clifftop walking route from Odeceixe south to Burgau. The coast road is not walkable end-to-end; a car or bus is needed between destinations. Albufeira and Vilamoura resort areas are bikeable but not particularly interesting for walking beyond the beach.

Rental Car โ€” EUR 25-60/day (~$27-65 USD) for a compact car including insurance
Comboios de Portugal (CP) Train โ€” EUR 3-10 (~$3.25-11 USD) for most Algarve coastal hops
Eva Transportes (Regional Buses) โ€” EUR 3-15 (~$3.25-16 USD) depending on distance

Tuscany

A rental car is the best way to explore Tuscany's countryside, hilltop towns, and wine regions at your own pace. Trains connect the major cities well, but many smaller towns require a car or infrequent buses. Be aware of ZTL restricted zones in town centers.

Walkability: Tuscan town centers are compact and best explored on foot. Florence is very walkable despite the crowds. In smaller towns like San Gimignano, Pienza, and Cortona, you can cover the historic center in an hour or two. The countryside requires a car or bike between towns.

Rental Car โ€” โ‚ฌ35-70/day for a compact car; fuel ~โ‚ฌ1.80/liter
Trenitalia Regional & High-Speed โ€” โ‚ฌ8-15 for regional routes; โ‚ฌ25-50 for high-speed
SITA / Tiemme Buses โ€” โ‚ฌ3-10 depending on distance

The Verdict

Choose Algarve if...

you want Europe's most dramatic Atlantic coastline โ€” golden limestone sea stacks at Ponta da Piedade, 300 days of sunshine, Cabo de Sรฃo Vicente where the Age of Discovery launched, Silves' Moorish castle, and cataplana seafood that defines the coast

Choose Tuscany if...

you want Renaissance hill towns, cypress-lined roads, Chianti vineyards, Florence art, and slow-food dinners under the Tuscan sun
