How to pick the right month

Every destination has a peak window — the months when weather, crowds, and prices line up best. Travel during peak and you get the easiest version of the trip but pay top dollar. Travel just outside peak (the shoulder month on either side) and you usually get 80% of the experience for 60-70% of the cost.

Three rules of thumb:

  • Northern hemisphere classics (Europe, USA, Japan, China) are at their peak May-September. Shoulder April and October are usually the smartest months.
  • Tropical destinations (Southeast Asia, the Caribbean, much of Africa) flip — peak runs roughly November-April when the weather is dry. Peak overlaps with northern winter, which is why winter beach trips are so popular.
  • Southern hemisphere (Australia, NZ, southern Africa, Patagonia) inverts — December-February is high summer there. Great timing if you want to escape a northern winter.

September is often the smartest travel month — peak weather across most of the northern hemisphere, half the crowds of August, and noticeably softer prices on flights and hotels. May is a close second for the same reasons. October and April round out the four "best balance" months.

What's the cheapest month to travel?

Globally, January and February are the cheapest months for most destinations — flights, hotels, and tours all run noticeably below summer prices. Tropical destinations are an exception (peak season runs Dec-Apr). The trick: pick a destination whose low season aligns with your travel dates.

When should I book a trip for 2026?

Domestic flights book ~3 months out, international flights ~6 months out for the best balance of price and selection. Peak holidays (Christmas, summer European trips, Japan's cherry blossoms) need 6-9 months. Last-minute travel works best in shoulder months (April, May, September, October) when supply outpaces demand.
