Maldives at $500/day versus Phuket at $85/day is not a comparison — it's a fork. Maldives wins on water clarity (40-meter visibility on a normal day), reef quality, and the unrepeatable feeling of an island that holds 80 people total. Phuket wins on everything else cost-related: a beachfront bungalow in Kata for $40, $3 pad see ew at Lock Tum Tim, day trips to Phang Nga Bay's James Bond Island, and a real Thai food culture the resort circuit can't replicate. Maldives is one trip of a lifetime; Phuket is a yearly habit.
