Macau vs Guilin

Which destination is right for your next trip?

Quick Verdict

Pick Guilin for Li River cormorant fishermen, the 20-yuan-note karst stretch, and Longji rice-terrace overnights. Pick Macau if Senado Square cobbles, ruins of St. Paul's, and the Cotai Strip's biggest casino floor on earth fit the Hong Kong combo.

How do Macau and Guilin compare?

Two southern China decisions on opposite ends of the spectrum. Guilin is the karst-landscape town in Guangxi where the Li River cruise to Yangshuo passes bamboo-grove limestone peaks straight off the back of the 20-yuan note. Macau is the former Portuguese colony 65km west of Hong Kong, the only place in the world where Cantonese culture and pastel Portuguese architecture genuinely fused — Senado Square's wave-pattern cobblestones, the ruins of St. Paul's facade, Portuguese egg tarts at Lord Stow's, and the Cotai Strip megacasinos that out-Vegas Vegas. The two are 1,200km apart and rarely paired — Guilin sits inside a Yangshuo nature loop, Macau sits inside a Hong Kong city loop.

Costs split clearly: Guilin runs $35/$95 budget/mid-range, Macau is $60/$180 with rooms ranging from cheap guesthouses in Taipa Village to $400 weekend rates at Wynn Palace. Macau gets you 5/5 nightlife and food scene, walkable UNESCO heritage center, and the world's largest casino floor at the Venetian. Guilin gives you 5/5 nature access, cormorant fishermen at dusk, and Longji rice-terrace stays in Ping'an village. Macau is reachable by 1-hour ferry from Hong Kong's Sheung Wan terminal or 30-minute bus across the world's longest sea-crossing bridge. Guilin needs a 2-hour flight from Guangzhou or Shenzhen. Both peak October–November; Macau also works December–March.

Different reasons for being there entirely. The case for combining is a 10-day Greater Bay Area loop — Hong Kong four nights, Macau weekend, fly Macau direct to Guilin for three karst nights, exit via Guilin or fly back to Hong Kong. Pro tip: in Macau use the free shuttle buses between casinos to dodge taxi fares, and in Guilin negotiate a private bamboo raft from Yangdi to Xingping rather than booking the standard tour-boat Li River cruise. Pick Guilin for karst mountains, river slowness, and Yangshuo cycling. Pick Macau for casino-meets-UNESCO contrast, Portuguese-Chinese food fusion, and the easiest weekend break from Hong Kong.

🛡️ Safety

Macau85/100Safety Score82/100Guilin

Macau

Macau is very safe with low crime rates. The casino areas are heavily monitored with security. The main concerns are gambling-related debt scams and typhoon-season weather.

Guilin

Guilin and Yangshuo are very safe destinations for tourists — violent crime is extremely rare in China, the local police presence is high, and the city is well-organized. The main risks are tourist scams (overpriced taxi tours, fake products, "tea ceremony" scams targeted at solo travellers), road accidents on bicycle and scooter rentals, and altitude/heat-related issues at the rice terraces in summer.

🌤️ Weather

Macau

Macau has a humid subtropical climate similar to Hong Kong. Summers are hot and wet with typhoon risk, while autumn and winter are the most comfortable seasons for exploring on foot.

Spring (March - May)18-27
Summer (June - September)26-33
Autumn (October - November)20-28
Winter (December - February)12-18

Guilin

Guilin has a humid subtropical climate — hot, humid summers (May-September), mild damp winters (December-February), and pleasant transitional seasons. The misty conditions that produce the iconic karst photographs are most common in March-May (spring fog) and after rainfall. Year-round destination but spring (April-May) and autumn (September-November) are optimal.

Spring (March - May)12 to 25°C
Summer (June - August)23 to 33°C
Autumn (September - November)15 to 28°C
Winter (December - February)5 to 15°C

🚇 Getting Around

Macau

Macau is small enough to explore largely on foot and by bus. Free casino shuttle buses are a popular hack for getting between major areas. The new LRT light rail serves the Taipa-Cotai area.

Walkability: High on the Macau Peninsula — the UNESCO Historic Centre, Senado Square, and Ruins of St. Paul's are all within walking distance. Taipa Village is also very walkable.

Free Casino ShuttlesFree
Macau LRT3-6 MOP ($0.37-0.75)

Guilin

Guilin has a city bus network and Didi (Chinese ride-hailing app, equivalent to Uber). Yangshuo is small and best explored by bicycle or electric scooter. High-speed rail connects Guilin to Beijing, Shanghai, Hong Kong, and Guangzhou; the Guilin North railway station is 12 km from city centre. The Li River cruise from Guilin to Yangshuo is itself the main inter-city transport for tourists.

Walkability: Yangshuo town is highly walkable — West Street, the Li River pier, and most accommodation are within 10 minutes on foot. Guilin city centre (Elephant Trunk Hill, Two Rivers Four Lakes scenic area) is walkable but the city is sprawling and reaching outlying attractions like Reed Flute Cave requires transport.
