How do Koh Phi Phi and Phuket compare?
Koh Phi Phi is six islands in the Andaman Sea between Phuket and Krabi, the most famous of which are Phi Phi Don, the inhabited backpacker hub with no roads and a maze of pedestrian sois, and Phi Phi Leh, the uninhabited limestone fortress whose Maya Bay starred in The Beach, while Phuket — thailand's largest island is a tropical playground of palm-fringed beaches, turquoise Andaman Sea waters, and lively nightlife. Both sit in Thailand, yet the country you encounter at each is barely the same place.
Koh Phi Phi wins on walkability. Koh Phi Phi has a slight edge on nature. Koh Phi Phi is friendlier on the wallet at roughly $90/day mid-range against $115/day for Phuket.
Both peak around the same window (November through February), so a single trip can hit each at its best.

🛡️ Safety
Koh Phi Phi
Phi Phi is broadly safe for foreign travellers, with a heavy tourism economy and police presence. The main hazards are environmental, traffic-on-the-water, and alcohol-related: longtail boat accidents, drowning at unguarded beaches, sun and dehydration, and incidents at the Loh Dalum bars. Petty theft from beach loungers and unsecured rooms exists. Solo female travellers consistently report feeling safe but should exercise standard caution at the late-night Loh Dalum strip.
Phuket
Phuket is generally safe for tourists, but scams, motorbike accidents, and ocean hazards are real risks. The island sees millions of visitors annually and tourism infrastructure is well established, but exercise common sense.
🌤️ Weather
Koh Phi Phi
Phi Phi sits in the Andaman Sea and follows the same monsoon pattern as Phuket and Krabi. The dry season runs November through April with calm, clear seas and the best beach conditions of the year; the wet season runs May through October with frequent rain and rougher seas. Sea temperature stays 27-29°C year-round. Many smaller resorts and dive operators close during the deepest monsoon (September-October).
Phuket
Phuket has a tropical monsoon climate with two main seasons: dry (November-April) and wet (May-October). Temperatures stay warm year-round, hovering between 25-34°C. The southwest monsoon brings heavy rain and rough seas from June to September.
🚇 Getting Around
Koh Phi Phi
Phi Phi Don has no roads, no cars, and no motorbikes. All in-island movement is on foot, by handcart for goods, and by longtail boat between beaches. Inter-island movement is by ferry to Phuket, Krabi, or Koh Lanta, or by speedboat day-tour. Tonsai pier handles all ferry traffic.
Walkability: Tonsai village is entirely walkable — about a 1.5 km maze of pedestrian sois with restaurants, dive shops, and bars. The path to Loh Dalum takes 5 minutes. The viewpoint is a 20-30 minute climb from the village. Long Beach is a 30-minute walk at low tide or a 5-minute longtail. Phi Phi Don is one of the easiest beach destinations in Thailand for a car-free traveller.
Phuket
Phuket has no rail system and limited public buses. Most visitors rely on tuk-tuks, songthaews (shared trucks), Grab ride-hailing, or rented motorbikes. The lack of meters in taxis and tuk-tuks means negotiating fares is standard.
Walkability: Individual beaches and Phuket Old Town are walkable, but the island is large (48 km long) and spread out. Walking between areas is impractical. The hills are steep and sidewalks are scarce outside of town centers.
