The city center and major tourist areas have remained largely operational, but air raid alerts are frequent and all visitors must know how to access shelter. Most Western governments advise against non-essential travel to Ukraine. If you do travel, monitor official advisories daily, know your nearest shelter, and have contingency plans. Auroras are occasionally visible on clear winter nights north of the city. Spring and autumn are short but beautiful. Pack for rain in any season and extreme cold November through March.

Helsinki has an excellent integrated public transport network operated by HSL (Helsingin Seudun Liikenne), covering metro, trams, buses, local trains, and the ferry to Suomenlinna — all on a single ticketing system. The city center is compact and highly walkable in good weather. Trams are the most useful mode for tourists, running frequently and connecting all the main sights. The metro is useful for longer trips east or west. City Bikes (shared bicycles) are excellent in summer. For winter, the tram and metro keep running regardless of snow.
Walkability: The Helsinki city center peninsula is highly walkable in summer — Senate Square to Market Square to Esplanadi to the Design District is a comfortable 30-minute stroll. In winter, walking is possible but requires proper footwear for icy conditions. Distances between major sights are modest and the flat terrain helps.

Kyiv has an excellent and very affordable public transport system — the Soviet-built metro is fast and logical, trolleybuses and buses fill the gaps, and Bolt/Uklon ride-hailing apps work reliably. The city's hilly topography means some areas require transport or steep walking.
Walkability: Moderate. The historic upper city is compact and walkable; the descent to Podil involves significant elevation change. Most major sights cluster within 3–4 km of Maidan.
