Quick Verdict
Pick Beijing for Forbidden City scale, Mutianyu Wall sections, and Da Dong Peking duck in hutong neighborhoods. Pick Guilin if Li River bamboo rafts, Longji terraced fields, and Yangshuo karst-cycling days win.

How do Guilin and Beijing compare?
Most China itineraries hit Beijing and then debate the southern detour β head to Shanghai for skyline, or south to Guilin for karst landscape. Guilin is the slower, scenic answer and probably the more memorable one. The flight from Beijing Capital to Guilin Liangjiang takes 3h15 on Air China for around $180 round-trip, or you can take a high-speed rail south for about 11 hours and roughly $100. Beijing is the imperial-history capital β Forbidden City's 9,999 rooms, the Great Wall at Mutianyu (less crowded than Badaling) or Jinshanling, Temple of Heaven, hutong bike rides through the old neighborhoods, and Peking duck at Da Dong.
Guilin is the karst landscape that fills every China travel poster β the Li River cruise from Guilin city down to Yangshuo (4 hours, $70), the cormorant fishermen at sunset on bamboo rafts, the Longji terraced rice fields a 2.5-hour bus ride north, and Yangshuo's backpacker village as the actual cycling base. Beijing mid-range runs about $120 a day, Guilin about $95. Best months differ: Beijing peaks in April-May and September-October because winter brings smog and summer brings 35Β°C heat. Guilin is best April through November, with September the sweet spot β green rice terraces before harvest, manageable heat, and clear skies for the Li River.
These two pair well as a 10-day arc with internal flights β four Beijing nights, fly south, four Guilin nights split between the city and Yangshuo. The transit is straightforward and the contrast is the entire point. Pro tip: skip the official Li River cruise from Zhujiang dock and take a smaller bamboo raft from Yangdi to Xingping instead β the four-hour mass cruise stops far short of the famous 20-yuan-note view, but a private raft for $40 puts you right at Xingping's reflection point. Pick Beijing if you want the imperial-history backbone of any China trip. Pick Guilin if you want the karst landscape that locals consider the most beautiful place in the country.

π‘οΈ Safety
Guilin
Guilin and Yangshuo are very safe destinations for tourists β violent crime is extremely rare in China, the local police presence is high, and the city is well-organized. The main risks are tourist scams (overpriced taxi tours, fake products, "tea ceremony" scams targeted at solo travellers), road accidents on bicycle and scooter rentals, and altitude/heat-related issues at the rice terraces in summer.
Beijing
Beijing is generally very safe with low violent crime rates. The main concerns for tourists are scams, pickpocketing in crowded areas, air pollution, and navigating internet restrictions.
π€οΈ Weather
Guilin
Guilin has a humid subtropical climate β hot, humid summers (May-September), mild damp winters (December-February), and pleasant transitional seasons. The misty conditions that produce the iconic karst photographs are most common in March-May (spring fog) and after rainfall. Year-round destination but spring (April-May) and autumn (September-November) are optimal.
Beijing
Beijing has a continental monsoon climate with hot, humid summers and cold, dry winters. Spring can bring sandstorms from the Gobi Desert. Autumn is widely considered the best season to visit.
π Getting Around
Guilin
Guilin has a city bus network and Didi (Chinese ride-hailing app, equivalent to Uber). Yangshuo is small and best explored by bicycle or electric scooter. High-speed rail connects Guilin to Beijing, Shanghai, Hong Kong, and Guangzhou; the Guilin North railway station is 12 km from city centre. The Li River cruise from Guilin to Yangshuo is itself the main inter-city transport for tourists.
Walkability: Yangshuo town is highly walkable β West Street, the Li River pier, and most accommodation are within 10 minutes on foot. Guilin city centre (Elephant Trunk Hill, Two Rivers Four Lakes scenic area) is walkable but the city is sprawling and reaching outlying attractions like Reed Flute Cave requires transport.
Beijing
Beijing's metro is massive (27 lines, 470+ stations) and covers most tourist areas. Distances between sights can be large β combine metro with taxis or ride-hailing for efficiency.
Walkability: Moderate β individual areas like the Forbidden City surroundings and hutong neighborhoods are very walkable, but Beijing is enormous and distances between attractions are significant.
