๐Ÿ›ก๏ธ Safety

Granada55/100Safety Scoreโœ“62/100New Orleans

Granada

Granada is generally safe for tourists, particularly within the well-traveled historic center. Nicaragua as a whole has lower crime rates than its Central American neighbors. Exercise standard precautions, especially at night and near the lake area. Political protests have occasionally caused unrest in the past.

New Orleans

New Orleans has higher violent crime rates than most US tourist cities, but crime is heavily concentrated in specific neighborhoods. Tourist areas (French Quarter during day, Garden District, Warehouse District, Frenchmen Street) are generally safe. Pickpocketing and phone theft on Bourbon Street are common. After-hours crime spikes outside these zones.

๐Ÿš‡ Getting Around

Granada

Granada's colonial core is compact and easily walkable. For destinations outside the center, cheap taxis, horse-drawn carriages, and local buses are readily available. Chicken buses connect to Managua and other cities. Tourist shuttles run to major destinations.

Walkability: Granada's colonial center is flat, compact, and best explored on foot. The Parque Central, Calle La Calzada, and all major churches are within a 10-minute walk of each other. Sidewalks are uneven and streets can be dusty. Carry water โ€” it gets very hot.

City Taxis โ€” C$20-50 ($0.55-1.40) within the city; C$200-400 ($5.50-11) to Masaya
Chicken Buses โ€” C$15-50 ($0.40-1.40) per ride; Managua C$35 ($1)
Tourist Shuttles โ€” $15-35 per person per trip (Leรณn, San Juan del Sur, Ometepe)

New Orleans

New Orleans is compact and walkable in its tourist core. The Regional Transit Authority (RTA) runs historic streetcars, buses, and ferries. A Jazzy Pass offers unlimited rides. Driving downtown is difficult โ€” streets are narrow, parking is scarce and expensive, and the one-way grid is confusing.

Walkability: The French Quarter, Marigny, CBD, and Warehouse District are highly walkable. The Garden District, Bywater, and Mid-City are walkable once you've arrived, but you'll want a streetcar or rideshare to get between districts. Sidewalks in the Quarter can be uneven โ€” watch for broken flagstones, especially at night.

St. Charles & Canal Streetcars โ€” $1.25 per ride, $3 for a 1-day Jazzy Pass
RTA Bus โ€” $1.25 per ride, $3 day pass, $9 three-day pass
Uber / Lyft โ€” $8-20 for most trips within the city, $35-50 from the airport

The Verdict

Choose Granada if...

you want colonial charm, volcanoes, and Lake Nicaragua islands at rock-bottom backpacker prices

Choose New Orleans if...

you want America's most culturally distinct city โ€” Creole and Cajun food, jazz on Frenchmen Street, and French Quarter magic
