Taipei vs Guilin

Which destination is right for your next trip?

Quick Verdict

Pick Guilin for Li River bamboo rafts past 20-yuan-note karst, Reed Flute Cave chambers, and Longji rice terraces. Pick Taipei if Shilin pepper buns, Jiufen lantern teahouses, and Beitou hot springs by MRT fit better.

How do Taipei and Guilin compare?

Two cities that share a writing system and basically nothing else. Guilin is the karst-landscape city of southern Guangxi — the Li River cruise toward Yangshuo passing the limestone peaks printed on China's 20-yuan note, Reed Flute Cave's lit chambers, Elephant Trunk Hill, Solitary Beauty Peak inside the city, and the Longji rice terraces two hours north for layered hillsides and Yao village stays. Taipei is Taiwan's friendly capital — Taipei 101's 508m glass tower, Shilin Night Market's pepper buns and stinky tofu, Jiufen's lantern-lit teahouses inspiring Spirited Away, the National Palace Museum's imperial Chinese collection, Beitou hot springs by MRT, and one of Asia's safest, easiest-to-navigate cities.

Taipei runs about $115 a day mid-range against $95 in Guilin, but the experience is in completely different leagues for ease. Taipei wins decisively on transit (the MRT is one of the world's best, contactless EasyCard for everything), English friendliness, food variety (every Asian cuisine is here at high quality), and 24-hour convenience-store culture that just works. Guilin wins on landscape — the Li River and Yangshuo karst valleys are the entire reason to go, and nothing in Taiwan delivers that scale. Both food cultures play hard: Guilin mifen at $1.50, Taipei beef noodle soup at $5–$7, both worth crossing oceans for in their own way.

Both peak in shoulder season — Taipei is best March–May and October–November to dodge typhoons and humidity; Guilin peaks April–May and September–November for clearest karst views. The 2.5-hour direct China Airlines or EVA from TPE to KWL runs $250–$400 round-trip. Pro tip: in Guilin, skip the standard Li River cruise marketing and book the bamboo-raft trip from Yangdi to Xingping (the actual 20-yuan-note view) — it's smaller, slower, and you stop for photos where the big boats don't. Pick Guilin for karst landscapes, the Li River, and a calmer China week. Pick Taipei for night markets, world-class transit, and Asia at its most navigable for first-time visitors.

🛡️ Safety

Taipei90/100Safety Score82/100Guilin

Taipei

Taipei is one of the safest major cities in Asia. Violent crime is extremely rare, and even petty theft is uncommon. The city feels safe to walk around at all hours, including for solo female travelers. The biggest risks are typhoons, earthquakes, and traffic.

Guilin

Guilin and Yangshuo are very safe destinations for tourists — violent crime is extremely rare in China, the local police presence is high, and the city is well-organized. The main risks are tourist scams (overpriced taxi tours, fake products, "tea ceremony" scams targeted at solo travellers), road accidents on bicycle and scooter rentals, and altitude/heat-related issues at the rice terraces in summer.

🌤️ Weather

Taipei

Taipei has a humid subtropical climate with hot, humid summers and mild, damp winters. The city sits in a basin which traps heat and moisture. Typhoon season runs from June to October. Rain is common throughout the year, with the northeast monsoon bringing persistent drizzle in winter.

Spring (March - May)16-28°C
Summer (June - August)26-36°C
Autumn (September - November)18-30°C
Winter (December - February)12-20°C

Guilin

Guilin has a humid subtropical climate — hot, humid summers (May-September), mild damp winters (December-February), and pleasant transitional seasons. The misty conditions that produce the iconic karst photographs are most common in March-May (spring fog) and after rainfall. Year-round destination but spring (April-May) and autumn (September-November) are optimal.

Spring (March - May)12 to 25°C
Summer (June - August)23 to 33°C
Autumn (September - November)15 to 28°C
Winter (December - February)5 to 15°C

🚇 Getting Around

Taipei

Taipei has an excellent MRT system that is clean, efficient, and covers most tourist areas. Combined with buses, YouBike, and affordable taxis, getting around is easy and cheap. An EasyCard is essential for seamless travel across all modes.

Walkability: Central Taipei is very walkable with wide sidewalks and pedestrian-friendly intersections. The Xinyi shopping district, Zhongshan area, and Ximending are excellent on foot. Some older neighborhoods have uneven sidewalks. The riverside bike paths are also popular for walking.

City BusesNT$15 ($0.47) per section

Guilin

Guilin has a city bus network and Didi (Chinese ride-hailing app, equivalent to Uber). Yangshuo is small and best explored by bicycle or electric scooter. High-speed rail connects Guilin to Beijing, Shanghai, Hong Kong, and Guangzhou; the Guilin North railway station is 12 km from city centre. The Li River cruise from Guilin to Yangshuo is itself the main inter-city transport for tourists.

Walkability: Yangshuo town is highly walkable — West Street, the Li River pier, and most accommodation are within 10 minutes on foot. Guilin city centre (Elephant Trunk Hill, Two Rivers Four Lakes scenic area) is walkable but the city is sprawling and reaching outlying attractions like Reed Flute Cave requires transport.
