Quick Verdict
Pick Kerala for Alleppey kettuvallam canals, Munnar tea hills, and Fort Kochi spice-port wandering. Pick Leh & Ladakh if Pangong's 134 km turquoise, Khardung La passes, and Buddhist monastery cliff terraces win.

How do Leh & Ladakh and Kerala compare?
These are India's two most photogenic regions and they sit at opposite latitudinal and altitudinal extremes โ Kerala on the tropical Arabian Sea coast at sea level, Ladakh on the Tibetan plateau at 3,500m. Kerala is God's Own Country at 33 million people across a 900 km southwestern coastline โ overnight kettuvallam houseboat cruises out of Alleppey through 1,500 km of palm-fringed backwater canals, tea plantations blanketing the Munnar hills at 1,500m, the colonial spice port of Fort Kochi, Kathakali face-painted dance, and Periyar Tiger Reserve in the Western Ghats. Ladakh is the high-altitude Buddhist kingdom โ 17th-century palaces and 12-storey monasteries terraced up cliff faces, the 134 km turquoise Pangong Lake, Nubra Valley's Bactrian camels, and Khardung La pass at 5,359m as one of the highest paved roads anywhere.
The seasons split cleanly. Kerala (COK, TRV, CCJ) peaks November through March on the Arabian Sea coast and runs 90 USD/day mid-range. Leh (IXL) is reached only June through September because the high passes close in October and the temperature swings 50ยฐC between summer days and winter nights โ mid-range runs 85 USD/day, but acclimatisation to 3,500m takes the first 48 hours of any visit. The two are 2,800 km apart by air and require a connection through Delhi (a 2-leg, 6-7 hour total day) at around 12,000 INR / 145 USD round trip on IndiGo. Both score 75-80 on safety; both reward 7 nights minimum.
Pick Kerala if you want palm shade, Ayurvedic massage, houseboat sunsets, and tropical India at sea level with a December-January window. Pick Leh-Ladakh if you want Himalayan starkness, Buddhist monastery culture, Pangong Lake colour shifts, and a June-July window when the rest of India is monsoon-soaked. Pro tip: combine them on a 3-week trip with Ladakh in the first week (June or September shoulder, before or after the Indian school summer rush) and Kerala in late October when the southwest monsoon has just lifted and prices are still pre-peak.

๐ก๏ธ Safety
Leh & Ladakh
Ladakh is one of the safest destinations in India โ extremely low crime rates, a strong Indian Army presence due to border tensions with Pakistan and China, and a deeply Buddhist culture that discourages aggression. The genuine risks are altitude-related: acute mountain sickness (AMS) affects 30-50% of arriving visitors and high-altitude pulmonary edema (HAPE) and cerebral edema (HACE) can be fatal if ignored. The road network is also dangerous โ narrow mountain passes, landslides, and risky overtaking.
Kerala
Kerala is consistently rated among the safest states in India for tourists, including solo female travelers. Its high literacy rate, organized tourism infrastructure, and strong local governance contribute to a lower crime rate than most Indian states. The primary hazards are environmental โ monsoon flooding, coastal currents, and wildlife in forested areas โ rather than personal safety concerns.
๐ค๏ธ Weather
Leh & Ladakh
Ladakh is a high-altitude cold desert โ extreme temperature swings, intense solar radiation, and very low humidity. Summer (June-September) is the only practical visiting season for most travellers; the overland roads are open and temperatures are tolerable. Winter (November-March) sees Leh drop to -25ยฐC and the overland passes close, but flights operate and the experience is unforgettable for the prepared.
Kerala
Kerala has a tropical climate governed by two monsoon cycles. The southwest monsoon (June-September) is the heaviest in mainland India, bringing thunderous daily rainfall, high humidity, and a dramatic transformation of the landscape into intense green. The northeast monsoon (October-November) brings lighter rains to the south. December to February is the dry, mild peak tourist season. Kerala's highland areas (Munnar, Wayanad) are significantly cooler year-round.
๐ Getting Around
Leh & Ladakh
Leh has no formal public transport โ the city is small enough to walk, and inter-village travel is by hired taxi (the Ladakhi Taxi Union sets fixed rates), shared jeep, or rented motorbike. Inner Line Permits are required for most popular destinations (Pangong, Nubra, Tso Moriri); permits are issued in Leh in 1-2 hours.
Walkability: Leh's old town and main bazaar are easily walkable but the altitude makes any incline tiring for the first few days. Reaching Shanti Stupa, Tsemo Castle, and the upper neighbourhoods involves uphill walking that can trigger AMS symptoms in unacclimatised visitors. Inter-village travel requires hired taxi or shared jeep.
Kerala
Kerala is one of the better-connected Indian states for travel. Indian Railways runs the backbone of the coastal corridor linking Trivandrum, Kochi, and Calicut, with frequent expresses. KSRTC (Kerala State Road Transport Corporation) and private buses reach virtually every district. Kochi and Trivandrum have Uber and Ola. Autorickshaws are ubiquitous for short hops. The backwaters require boats. Munnar and Wayanad are best reached by hired car or bus from Kochi.
Walkability: Walkability varies sharply by location. Fort Kochi is compact and very walkable โ the fishing nets, synagogue, Dutch Palace, and cafes are all within 30 minutes on foot. Alleppey town is flat and bikeable. Trivandrum and Calicut are sprawling and require transport. Munnar town is small but the plantation walks require transport to trailheads.
