Quick Verdict
Pick Key West if Hemingway-house tours, Mallory Square sunsets, and Old Town strolls justify the $350 rate. Pick Memphis if Sun Studio sessions, Stax Records, and the Lorraine Motel pilgrimage trump tropical-island walkability.

How do Key West and Memphis compare?
$350 a night in Key West is the surge — Old Town's small footprint and constant cruise-ship turnover keep rates among the highest in the US South. $150 in Memphis covers a downtown hotel near Beale Street with no surge whatsoever. The cost gap ($200/night) is real and persistent. Key West is 26,000 people on a 4-mile-long coral island at the southernmost tip of the continental US, walkable end-to-end, with Hemingway's house, Mallory Square's daily sunset celebration, and key lime pie from Kermit's. Memphis is 630,000 on the Mississippi — Sun Studio (Elvis, Johnny Cash, Carl Perkins all recorded there), Stax Records, Beale Street's blues clubs, Graceland, and the National Civil Rights Museum at the Lorraine Motel.
Both hit 5/5 walkability in their cores — Old Town Key West and Memphis's Downtown/Beale St. Memphis hits 5/5 cultural sites; Key West runs 4/5. Memphis's safety index of 52 is the bucket low and you'll feel it: stay near downtown or Midtown, skip late-night solo walks. The smell of a Key West February sunset is grilled mahi at Half Shell Raw Bar and frangipani; Memphis in October is dry-rub ribs from Rendezvous and barbecue smoke layered on Beale Street.
Best timing: Key West peaks December–April (hurricane risk June–November is real); Memphis runs April–May and September–October (avoid August's 36°C humidity). Practical tip: Key West EYW airport gets boutique service via Delta and American — most travellers fly into MIA and drive the 4-hour Overseas Highway down US-1. Memphis MEM is 15 minutes from downtown with Delta hub access. Pick Key West if Hemingway-house tours, Mallory Square sunsets, and Conch Republic key lime pie justify the $350 rate. Pick Memphis if Sun Studio, Stax, and the Civil Rights Museum at the Lorraine are the actual pilgrimage.

🛡️ Safety
Key West
Key West is generally a safe small city for tourists. Old Town is well-policed and busy; the main risks are alcohol-related incidents (Duval Street late-night), aggressive scooter rentals on busy streets, sun exposure, and the seasonal hurricane risk. Petty theft from rental scooters and unattended beach belongings does occur. The island's relaxed, party-oriented culture means common sense is your best safety tool.
Memphis
Memphis has one of the higher violent-crime rates among large American cities — but the crime is overwhelmingly concentrated in specific neighbourhoods (Frayser, Hickory Hill, parts of South Memphis) far from the tourist core. Downtown, Beale Street, the South Main Arts District, Midtown, and the Overton Park / Cooper-Young districts are well-patrolled and safe day and night. Use normal urban precautions; Uber/Lyft to and from Graceland and Stax (don't walk) and don't leave valuables in cars.
🌤️ Weather
Key West
Key West has a tropical savanna climate moderated by surrounding water — temperatures stay narrowly between 18°C (winter low) and 32°C (summer high) all year. There is a wet season (May–October, with afternoon thunderstorms and hurricane risk) and a dry season (November–April, which is also peak tourist season). Hurricane risk is real — Hurricane Irma in 2017 caused major damage to the Lower Keys.
Memphis
Memphis has a humid subtropical climate — long, hot, humid summers (32°C+ regular, frequent thunderstorms), short and mild winters (occasional snow but rarely sticks), and short pleasant spring and autumn windows. Summer afternoon thunderstorms are common; tornado season is March–May (Memphis is on the eastern edge of Tornado Alley). Spring (April–May) and autumn (September–October) are dramatically more comfortable than summer.
🚇 Getting Around
Key West
Key West Old Town is small (about 2 miles by 4 miles total island) and the historic centre is almost entirely walkable. Bicycles are the favourite local transport — flat terrain, dedicated bike lanes, and bike racks everywhere. The Duval Loop bus is free; Uber and Lyft operate but are more expensive than in Miami. Renting a car for the week is unnecessary unless you're visiting other Keys; parking in Old Town is scarce and expensive ($4-8/hour, $25/day in city lots).
Walkability: Old Town is one of the most walkable small-city centres in America — flat, compact, shaded by tropical canopy, and full of architectural detail. The full Duval Street walk takes 25 minutes end to end. Bicycles extend the comfortable range to the entire island.
Memphis
Memphis is car-first like most American Sun Belt cities — public transit (MATA buses + the downtown trolley) covers limited useful tourist routes. The classic Main Street trolley loops through downtown and is genuinely useful for hopping between hotels, Beale Street, and South Main. For everywhere else (Graceland, Stax, the airport), Uber/Lyft or a rental car is the answer.
Walkability: Downtown core (Beale Street + South Main + Riverfront) is genuinely walkable. Everything else (Graceland 9 miles south, Stax 3 miles south, Sun Studio just east of downtown but in a transit-light pocket) is rideshare or rental car. The Main Street Trolley extends the walkable downtown north–south.
