How do Key West and Louisville compare?

$350 mid-range in Key West versus $180 in Louisville — that gap is the difference between a Gulf-Stream tropical island and a Kentucky river city. Key West is the southernmost-US Conch Republic vibe: Hemingway House cats with six toes, Mallory Square's nightly sunset celebration with jugglers, and key lime pie at Kermit's where they sell it on a stick dipped in chocolate. Louisville is bourbon distillery country (Heaven Hill, Evan Williams, Jim Beam, Maker's Mark all on the Bourbon Trail), Churchill Downs Derby pageantry, and the Louisville Slugger Museum's giant bat against the brick warehouse.

Best-month windows are inverted. Key West is December-April — 75-80°F afternoons, water at 75°F, hurricane risk gone. Louisville is April-May (Derby) and September-October. Walkability splits hard: Key West is a 5/5 island you can bike across in 25 minutes; Louisville is a 2/5 car-required city where you'll Uber between NuLu, the Highlands, and Old Louisville. Food differs as the prices suggest: conch fritters, grouper sandwiches, and rum runners in Key West; bourbon flights, hot brown sandwiches at the Brown Hotel, and chargrilled oysters at Eddie Merlot's.

Pro tip: Key West is best reached by driving the Overseas Highway (US-1) from Miami — 113 miles and 7-mile bridge views. Louisville requires a Derby decision: first weekend in May ($800/night premium) or any other time at half the price. Pair Louisville with a Bourbon Trail weekend (50-mile loop). Pick Key West for the Caribbean-adjacent winter break; pick Louisville for the bourbon-and-Derby weekend at $170 less per night.

🛡️ Safety

Key West75/100Safety Score58/100Louisville

Key West

Key West is generally a safe small city for tourists. Old Town is well-policed and busy; the main risks are alcohol-related incidents (Duval Street late-night), aggressive scooter rentals on busy streets, sun exposure, and the seasonal hurricane risk. Petty theft from rental scooters and unattended beach belongings does occur. The island's relaxed, party-oriented culture means common sense is your best safety tool.

Louisville

Louisville is generally safe for visitors in the tourist neighbourhoods — Downtown, Whiskey Row, NuLu, the Highlands, Old Louisville, and Cherokee Park are all well-policed and comfortable day and night with normal urban precautions. Some west-of-9th-Street neighbourhoods have higher crime concentration but visitors have no reason to enter them. Derby weekend brings 300,000+ visitors to the city; the Churchill Downs infield is famously rowdy but well-managed.

🌤️ Weather

Key West

Key West has a tropical savanna climate moderated by surrounding water — temperatures stay narrowly between 18°C (winter low) and 32°C (summer high) all year. There is a wet season (May–October, with afternoon thunderstorms and hurricane risk) and a dry season (November–April, which is also peak tourist season). Hurricane risk is real — Hurricane Irma in 2017 caused major damage to the Lower Keys.

Winter (Dry Season Peak) (December - February)18 to 26°C
Spring (March - May)21 to 30°C
Summer (Wet Season) (June - August)25 to 32°C
Autumn (Hurricane Season Peak) (September - November)23 to 31°C

Louisville

Louisville sits at the northern edge of the Upper South — humid subtropical climate with hot, humid summers (regularly 32°C+ in July–August), mild winters with occasional ice storms, and dramatic spring weather including thunderstorms and tornado risk in March–May. Spring (April–May, peaking with Derby weekend) and autumn (September–October) are the best windows.

Spring (March - May)8 to 25°C
Summer (June - August)20 to 32°C
Autumn (September - November)5 to 24°C
Winter (December - February)-3 to 9°C

🚇 Getting Around

Key West

Key West Old Town is small (about 2 miles by 4 miles total island) and the historic centre is almost entirely walkable. Bicycles are the favourite local transport — flat terrain, dedicated bike lanes, and bike racks everywhere. The Duval Loop bus is free; Uber and Lyft operate but are more expensive than in Miami. Renting a car for the week is unnecessary unless you're visiting other Keys; parking in Old Town is scarce and expensive ($4-8/hour, $25/day in city lots).

Walkability: Old Town is one of the most walkable small-city centres in America — flat, compact, shaded by tropical canopy, and full of architectural detail. The full Duval Street walk takes 25 minutes end to end. Bicycles extend the comfortable range to the entire island.

Louisville

Louisville is a driving city with a walkable downtown core. Inside downtown + Whiskey Row + NuLu (a 2-mile strip), walking and the free LouLift downtown trolley work fine. To reach Churchill Downs, the Highlands, Old Louisville, or distilleries on the Bourbon Trail, you'll need a car or rideshare. TARC bus service exists but is slow and visitor-unfriendly. Uber and Lyft operate everywhere with reasonable prices.

Walkability: Downtown + Whiskey Row + NuLu is genuinely walkable (about 2 miles end-to-end with most attractions on Main Street and Market Street). The Big Four Bridge pedestrian crossing of the Ohio River is one of the best urban walks in the South. Outside this corridor, Louisville is built for cars and you'll rideshare or drive.
