🛡️ Safety

Joshua Tree National Park

Crime is essentially a non-issue in Joshua Tree — the real hazards are environmental and people die from them every year. Heat illness in summer is the leading cause of death; getting lost in the boulder fields is second; falls from climbing are third. Cell service is spotty to nonexistent across most of the park. Tell someone your route and return time, carry far more water than you think you need (4 liters per person per day minimum), and never trust a GPS-only route off-trail because the granite formations look identical and there are no obvious landmarks.

San Francisco

San Francisco is generally safe for tourists in popular areas, but property crime (car break-ins, theft) is notably high. The Tenderloin and parts of SoMa have visible homelessness and open drug use. Use common sense and be vigilant with valuables.

🌤️ Weather

Joshua Tree National Park

Joshua Tree is a high-desert park with brutal extremes between summer and winter, and dramatic temperature swings between day and night in any season. Summer (June through early September) regularly exceeds 38°C with parts of the lower Pinto Basin pushing 45°C — genuinely dangerous for hiking, with deaths from heat exposure most years. Winter brings cool comfortable days (15-20°C) but freezing nights and occasional snow dustings on the higher Mojave side. The shoulder seasons of October-November and March-May are the best windows. There is no potable water inside the park — carry at least 4 liters per person per day.

Spring (March - May)10-28°C
Summer (June - August)24-42°C (peaks 45°C)
Autumn (September - November)12-32°C
Winter (December - February)0-18°C

San Francisco

San Francisco has a mild Mediterranean climate with cool summers and wet winters. The city is famous for its summer fog — Mark Twain may not have actually said it, but the coldest winter really can feel like a San Francisco summer. Microclimates vary dramatically between neighborhoods.

🚇 Getting Around

Joshua Tree National Park

Joshua Tree has no public transit, no shuttle inside the park, and no rideshare coverage in most of the area — you need a car. The park is laid out across roughly 60 miles of paved road from the West Entrance (Joshua Tree town) through to the South Entrance (Cottonwood, off I-10), with a separate North Entrance at Twentynine Palms. The most popular route is West Entrance in, drive Park Boulevard to the central highlights, and either return the same way or continue out the South via Pinto Basin Road. Most rentals are based at LAX, Palm Springs (PSP), or Ontario (ONT) airports.

Walkability: The park itself is not walkable in any conventional sense — it is a driving park with hiking trailheads. Within the gateway towns, Joshua Tree village is the most walkable (a 0.5-mile strip of restaurants, galleries, and shops along Highway 62) while Yucca Valley and Twentynine Palms are spread-out car-dependent strip towns.

Rental car or personal vehicleRental car $50-100/day from PSP/LAX; fuel $40-60 per fill
Guided park tours from Palm Springs / Yucca Valley$120-200 per person for half/full day group tour

San Francisco

San Francisco has a comprehensive public transit system operated by SFMTA (Muni) and BART. The Clipper Card works across all systems and is the easiest way to pay. Driving in the city is difficult due to hills, traffic, and expensive parking — transit, walking, and rideshares are strongly recommended.

Walkability: San Francisco is very walkable in flat areas like the Embarcadero, Marina, and Mission, but the steep hills can be exhausting. North Beach, Chinatown, and the Financial District are easily covered on foot. Wear comfortable shoes with good grip for the hills.

Muni Metro & Bus$2.50 per ride with Clipper Card (90-minute free transfers)
BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit)$2.15-$15.65 depending on distance, SFO to downtown ~$10
Cable Cars$8 per ride
