Gobi Desert

The Gobi is one of the safest tourist destinations on Earth from a crime perspective β€” no organised tourism crime, no urban risks, no scam infrastructure. The real safety considerations are environmental and logistical: extreme heat, isolation, unreliable communications, dehydration, and the fact that nearly all travel happens on rough tracks in 4WD vehicles with a single driver. A well-organised tour with an experienced operator effectively eliminates all of these risks.

Zhangjiajie

Zhangjiajie is generally very safe for tourists. China has low violent crime rates and the park is well-managed with clear trails and safety barriers. The main risks are altitude-related fatigue, slippery wet trails, and the physical demands of extensive stair climbing. Scams targeting tourists (overpriced taxis, unofficial guides) are the most common issue.

🌀️ Weather

Gobi Desert

The Gobi is a cold continental desert with one of the most extreme climates of any tourist destination on Earth. Summer days hit 35C; winter nights drop below -30C; spring brings vicious dust storms that can reduce visibility to metres. The realistic visitor window is mid-June through mid-September only β€” outside that, ger camps close, internal flights are unpredictable, and the cold is genuinely dangerous. July is the sweet spot: green pulse on the steppe after the late-June rains, the Yolyn Am ice still intact, and Naadam Festival (July 11-13) overlapping in UB.

Winter β€” Closed (November - March)-30 to -10Β°C
Spring β€” Dust Storms (April - May)-5 to 20Β°C

Zhangjiajie

Zhangjiajie has a humid subtropical climate with four distinct seasons. Mist and fog are common throughout the year, especially in the mornings, and are part of the landscape's ethereal beauty. Summer is hot and humid with frequent rain; winter is cold and damp. Spring and autumn offer the most comfortable conditions.

πŸš‡ Getting Around

Gobi Desert

There is no public transport across the Gobi. Effectively all visitors arrive in an organised tour vehicle (almost always a Russian UAZ-452 minivan, "Furgon," or a Toyota Land Cruiser 4WD) with a driver and English-speaking guide. Distances between sights are large β€” Khongoryn Els to Bayanzag is ~250 km on rough tracks, half a day of driving. Self-driving is technically possible but not recommended without serious off-road and navigation experience.

Walkability: On-foot exploration is limited to the immediate area around each sight β€” the Yolyn Am gorge walk, the Khongoryn Els dune ascent, and the Bayanzag clifftop walk. Distances between sights (50-300 km) are far too great for foot travel; the entire loop is vehicle-based with short walking sections at each stop.

Organised 4WD Tour (UAZ Furgon or Land Cruiser) β€” $100-200 per person/day in a shared UAZ; $250-400/day in a private Land Cruiser
UB to Dalanzadgad Flight + Local Driver β€” $150-250 one-way flight; vehicle hire from $100-180/day with driver
Self-Drive 4WD β€” $120-200/day for the vehicle plus fuel and recovery gear

Zhangjiajie

Getting around Zhangjiajie involves a combination of park shuttle buses, cable cars, elevators, and walking trails. The park areas are spread out, and the city is separate from the park entrance at Wulingyuan. Within the park, free shuttle buses and paid cable cars/elevators connect the various scenic areas.

Walkability: Within the park, extensive well-maintained trail networks connect viewpoints, though they involve significant stair climbing (some routes have 3,000+ steps). The park is enormous β€” plan 2-3 full days minimum to see the highlights without rushing. Zhangjiajie city center is moderately walkable.
