π‘οΈ Safety
Chicago
Tourist areas of Chicago (Loop, River North, Magnificent Mile, Museum Campus, Lincoln Park, Wicker Park) are generally safe. Gun violence affects specific neighborhoods on the South and West sides that tourists have no reason to visit. Petty crime like phone theft occurs on the "L" and in crowded areas.
Joshua Tree National Park
Crime is essentially a non-issue in Joshua Tree β the real hazards are environmental and people die from them every year. Heat illness in summer is the leading cause of death; getting lost in the boulder fields is second; falls from climbing are third. Cell service is spotty to nonexistent across most of the park. Tell someone your route and return time, carry far more water than you think you need (4 liters per person per day minimum), and never trust a GPS-only route off-trail because the granite formations look identical and there are no obvious landmarks.
π€οΈ Weather
Chicago
Chicago has a humid continental climate with extreme seasonal swings. Winters are brutally cold with wind chill off Lake Michigan, while summers are hot and humid. Spring and fall are glorious but brief. The lake creates its own microclimate β it can be 5-10 degrees cooler lakeside in summer.
Joshua Tree National Park
Joshua Tree is a high-desert park with brutal extremes between summer and winter, and dramatic temperature swings between day and night in any season. Summer (June through early September) regularly exceeds 38Β°C with parts of the lower Pinto Basin pushing 45Β°C β genuinely dangerous for hiking, with deaths from heat exposure most years. Winter brings cool comfortable days (15-20Β°C) but freezing nights and occasional snow dustings on the higher Mojave side. The shoulder seasons of October-November and March-May are the best windows. There is no potable water inside the park β carry at least 4 liters per person per day.
π Getting Around
Chicago
Chicago has an excellent public transit system run by the CTA (Chicago Transit Authority). The "L" (elevated/subway) train and bus network cover most of the city. A Ventra card works on all CTA and Pace buses. Driving downtown is stressful and parking is expensive β transit is the way to go.
Walkability: Downtown Chicago is very walkable and mostly flat. The Loop, Magnificent Mile, Museum Campus, and Riverwalk are easily covered on foot. Neighborhoods like Wicker Park, Lincoln Park, and Pilsen are pleasant to explore by foot. In winter, walking can be treacherous on icy sidewalks.
Joshua Tree National Park
Joshua Tree has no public transit, no shuttle inside the park, and no rideshare coverage in most of the area β you need a car. The park is laid out across roughly 60 miles of paved road from the West Entrance (Joshua Tree town) through to the South Entrance (Cottonwood, off I-10), with a separate North Entrance at Twentynine Palms. The most popular route is West Entrance in, drive Park Boulevard to the central highlights, and either return the same way or continue out the South via Pinto Basin Road. Most rentals are based at LAX, Palm Springs (PSP), or Ontario (ONT) airports.
Walkability: The park itself is not walkable in any conventional sense β it is a driving park with hiking trailheads. Within the gateway towns, Joshua Tree village is the most walkable (a 0.5-mile strip of restaurants, galleries, and shops along Highway 62) while Yucca Valley and Twentynine Palms are spread-out car-dependent strip towns.
