π‘οΈ Safety
Chicago
Tourist areas of Chicago (Loop, River North, Magnificent Mile, Museum Campus, Lincoln Park, Wicker Park) are generally safe. Gun violence affects specific neighborhoods on the South and West sides that tourists have no reason to visit. Petty crime like phone theft occurs on the "L" and in crowded areas.
Jacksonville
Jacksonville has a higher violent-crime rate than the national average and a higher rate than most Southern beach destinations β concentrated in specific neighborhoods on the Northside, Westside, and parts of the Southside that tourists rarely have a reason to visit. The tourist zones (downtown core, Riverside, San Marco, the Beaches, Amelia/Fort George) are markedly safer. The biggest visitor risks are car break-ins (a citywide problem), Atlantic rip currents, and seasonal hurricanes.
π€οΈ Weather
Chicago
Chicago has a humid continental climate with extreme seasonal swings. Winters are brutally cold with wind chill off Lake Michigan, while summers are hot and humid. Spring and fall are glorious but brief. The lake creates its own microclimate β it can be 5-10 degrees cooler lakeside in summer.
Jacksonville
Jacksonville has a humid subtropical climate with hot humid summers, mild winters, and Atlantic hurricane exposure peaking August-October. It is the only major Florida city north of the freeze line β winter cold snaps occasionally drop below 32Β°F, brief but real. The clear sweet spots are March-May and October-November. Avoid Aug-Sep hurricane peak and the worst July-Aug humidity.
π Getting Around
Chicago
Chicago has an excellent public transit system run by the CTA (Chicago Transit Authority). The "L" (elevated/subway) train and bus network cover most of the city. A Ventra card works on all CTA and Pace buses. Driving downtown is stressful and parking is expensive β transit is the way to go.
Walkability: Downtown Chicago is very walkable and mostly flat. The Loop, Magnificent Mile, Museum Campus, and Riverwalk are easily covered on foot. Neighborhoods like Wicker Park, Lincoln Park, and Pilsen are pleasant to explore by foot. In winter, walking can be treacherous on icy sidewalks.
Jacksonville
Jacksonville is a sprawling, car-dependent city built around 875 square miles of roads, bridges, and waterways. Public transit (JTA) runs buses and a downtown Skyway monorail, but neither is practical for tourists. A rental car or rideshare is essentially required. Downtown, Riverside, and San Marco are walkable individually but separated by river crossings.
Walkability: Downtown is reasonably walkable along the Northbank and Southbank Riverwalks, especially during events. Riverside's Five Points and San Marco Square are individually walkable for a half-day each, but the city as a whole is built for cars. Sidewalks are inconsistent in many residential neighborhoods.
