🛡️ Safety
Cape Town
Cape Town is generally safe in tourist areas, but South Africa has high crime rates overall. Violent crime tends to be concentrated in townships and certain suburbs away from tourist zones. Petty theft, car break-ins, and phone snatching are the main risks visitors face in popular areas.
Drakensberg
The Drakensberg is one of the safer parts of South Africa — a rural mountain region with low crime rates and a strong tourism infrastructure. The real risks are weather, terrain, and self-rescue distances rather than personal security. Lightning is the single most underestimated hazard; storms build with terrifying speed in summer afternoons.
🌤️ Weather
Cape Town
Cape Town has a Mediterranean climate with warm, dry summers (December-February) and cool, wet winters (June-August). The notorious "Cape Doctor" southeaster wind blows in summer, keeping the air clean but sometimes making beaches uncomfortable. Remember: seasons are reversed from the Northern Hemisphere.
Drakensberg
Highland subtropical climate — warm wet summers (December-February) with thunderstorms, and cool dry winters (June-August) with bright days and freezing nights. The base camps sit around 1,200-1,500 m; the high passes top 2,800 m. Temperatures drop roughly 1°C per 100 m of elevation, so summit conditions are 15-20°C colder than the valley below.
🚇 Getting Around
Cape Town
Cape Town is a sprawling city and public transit coverage is limited compared to European cities. Uber and Bolt are the most reliable and affordable way to get around. The MyCiTi bus covers key routes well. Renting a car is ideal for the Cape Peninsula and Winelands but not necessary within the City Bowl.
Walkability: The City Bowl, Waterfront, and Sea Point Promenade are pleasant for walking. The Sea Point-to-Camps Bay coastal walk is especially popular. Beyond these areas, distances are too great and infrastructure too spread out for walking to be practical. Always walk in well-populated areas.
Drakensberg
There is essentially no public transit in the Drakensberg. A rental car is required for any serious exploration — distances between the main valley basecamps (Royal Natal, Champagne, Giant's Castle, Underberg) are 1-2 hours of mountain driving. Within each valley, your lodge or hotel is the launch pad and most activities operate from on-site.
Walkability: The lodges and main camps are tiny — usually a single building or cluster within easy walking distance of restaurants and trailheads. There are no walkable "towns" to speak of; the experience is hub-and-spoke from your accommodation. Within the parks, hiking is the primary mode of movement once you have parked.
