🛡️ Safety

Aswan70/100Safety Score75/100Siwa Oasis

Aswan

Aswan is among the safest cities in Egypt for tourists — visible police and tourist police presence, the Nubian population is famously hospitable, and the tourism economy depends on safety. Violent crime against visitors is essentially non-existent; the main hassles are persistent felucca touts, taxi overcharging, and high-pressure souvenir sellers. The Egypt-wide travel cautions about the Sinai and Western Desert do not apply to Upper Egypt cities. The Abu Simbel road runs in police-mandated convoys for safety — formality more than active threat.

Siwa Oasis

Siwa itself is one of the safest places in Egypt — extremely low crime, a tight-knit traditional community, and a heavy military checkpoint presence on the road in (the area is sensitive due to the proximity to the Libyan border). The biggest risks are heatstroke, desert navigation hazards, and the occasional sensitivity around photographing local women.

🌤️ Weather

Aswan

Aswan has the driest climate of any inhabited city on Earth — annual rainfall is essentially zero (a few millimetres in some years). Summer temperatures regularly exceed 42°C and can reach 48°C in July; winter days are warm and pleasant (22-28°C) with cool nights. November to February is the only season most travellers will tolerate the heat for full-day temple visits. The Nile and Lake Nasser moderate humidity slightly but it remains a dry desert climate.

Winter (peak season) (November - February)10 to 28°C
Spring (March - April)15 to 36°C
Summer (avoid) (May - September)25 to 45°C
Autumn (October)18 to 38°C

Siwa Oasis

Siwa has an extreme hot desert climate with virtually no rainfall (the 1926 storm that destroyed Shali was unprecedented). Summer days are brutally hot — often above 40°C — but desert nights cool sharply. Winter days are warm and sunny (20-25°C) with cold nights that can drop to 5-10°C. October-March is the only practical visiting window for most travellers.

The cross-Nile public ferry to Elephantine Island and the West Bank is the cheapest fun ride in Egypt (LE 5).

Most visitors get around by bicycle (rented for around EGP 50/day from every guesthouse), donkey cart (the local taxi), or by hiring a driver-and-pickup for the day to reach the springs and desert sites. There is no formal taxi service and Uber does not operate.
