How do AlUla and Dubai compare?
Two visions of the modern Arabian Peninsula, and the choice is starker than the map suggests. AlUla is the new tourism crown jewel of Saudi Arabia β Hegra's 111 Nabataean tombs cut into honeyed sandstone outcrops, the mirrored Maraya concert hall vanishing into the desert at golden hour, Elephant Rock silhouetted against star-thick night skies, and a luxury-lodge build-out led by Habitas and Banyan Tree. Dubai is the four-decade-old version β Dubai Marina yacht slips, the Burj Khalifa tipping the skyline at 828m, Madinat Jumeirah's faux-souk canals, and the steady hum of a city that opened to global tourism long before Saudi did.
Daily mid-range budgets are wildly different β $350 in AlUla against $150 in Dubai. AlUla is intentionally upmarket and capacity-controlled, with no backpacker scene and limited mid-tier hotels; Dubai has every price point from $40 hostel beds in Deira to $3,000 Atlantis suites. Dubai wins on food variety, nightlife, shopping, and connectivity. AlUla wins on landscape and exclusivity β Hegra is genuinely better preserved than Petra and you may share the site with twenty other people instead of two thousand. Both score 80β90 on safety and feel completely calm at any hour.
Riyadh to AlUla is a 1-hour Saudia flight for around SAR 400, and the easiest pairing flies Dubai to Riyadh (2 hours, $200) then connects. November through March is the only sane window β AlUla is brutal from May to September. Pro tip: book the Hegra guided tour and the Sharaan Nature Reserve helicopter drop-off at the same time, since both run on capped daily slots and the helicopter sells out two months ahead at peak. Pick Dubai for an easy, polished Gulf city break with everything on tap. Pick AlUla for a landscape-and-archaeology splurge that did not exist as a tourism option five years ago.

π‘οΈ Safety
AlUla
Saudi Arabia is one of the safest countries in the world for tourists in terms of violent crime β street crime is extremely rare and AlUla itself is a tightly managed heritage destination with strong security presence. The primary risks are environmental: extreme heat, sandstorms, and flash floods. Cultural sensitivities are important to understand and respect.
Dubai
Dubai is one of the safest cities in the world for tourists. Violent crime is virtually nonexistent, and petty theft is rare. However, cultural and legal norms differ significantly from Western countries β what might be acceptable at home can be illegal here.
π€οΈ Weather
AlUla
AlUla has a hot desert climate with extremely hot summers and mild, pleasant winters. The oasis valley sits at around 900 meters elevation, which moderates temperatures slightly compared to the surrounding lowland desert. The primary tourist season runs October through April. Summer months are brutal and most outdoor sites become difficult to visit safely.
Dubai
Dubai has a hot desert climate with scorching summers and pleasantly warm winters. Rain is extremely rare (fewer than 20 days per year). Summer heat is extreme β outdoor activity becomes impractical from June to September without air conditioning.
π Getting Around
AlUla
AlUla's heritage sites are spread across a wide valley and desert area β a rental car or organized transport is essential for seeing the region. The old town is walkable but the main sites (Hegra, Elephant Rock, Dadan) are 10-25 km from each other and from AlUla town.
Walkability: AlUla Old Town and the AlJadidah Arts District are walkable. All major heritage sites β Hegra, Elephant Rock, Dadan, Jabal Ikmah β are too far apart to walk and require transport. The Ashar Valley and Sharaan Reserve require either a rental car or organized transfer.
Dubai
Dubai has a modern and expanding public transit system centered on the driverless Dubai Metro. However, the city is spread out and designed around cars. A Nol card (rechargeable transit card) works across metro, buses, trams, and water buses. Ride-hailing apps are popular and affordable.
Walkability: Dubai is not a walking city β distances are vast and summer heat makes walking impractical for much of the year. Exceptions include JBR Walk, Dubai Marina promenade, Al Fahidi Historical District, and the Downtown Dubai loop around Burj Khalifa. Indoor shopping malls are connected to metro stations via air-conditioned walkways.
