How do Córdoba and San Sebastián compare?

Spain's Andalucía-vs-Basque-Country debate at €140 in Córdoba against €230 in San Sebastián — a 64% jump that reshapes the trip. Córdoba is a UNESCO old town walked across in 25 minutes: the Mezquita's red-and-white striped arches, three medieval synagogues in the Judería, and the May Patios festival when courtyards open with the smell of jasmine and orange blossom. San Sebastián is the inverse trip type — Concha Bay's perfect crescent beach, pintxos bars in Parte Vieja where bartenders just hand you what's good, and the highest Michelin-star density in the world (3 three-stars within 30 minutes).

Mid-range €140 vs €230 — San Sebastián runs 64% more, partly because Basque country food culture has driven hotel pricing through the roof. A Córdoba salmorejo lunch is €12; a Parte Vieja pintxos crawl through 6 bars hits €40 a head with txakoli wine pours. Córdoba wins on UNESCO density (Mezquita, Alcázar, Roman Bridge, Judería all in 1km), cost, and the Patios festival that's singular in Spain; San Sebastián wins on food (4/5 vs 5/5 — but the depth gap is enormous), cleanliness (5/5 vs 4), the Atlantic surf at Zurriola Beach, and the Mendizorrotz hike with Bay of Biscay views.

Practical tip: Renfe high-speed rail Madrid–Córdoba takes 1h45m for €30 — combine with Seville for a 5-day Andalucía run; San Sebastián is 5h+ by train so most travelers fly into Bilbao (1-hour drive) or Biarritz (45 minutes). Time Córdoba for early May (Patios festival) or October before summer's 40°C inland heat; San Sebastián peaks late June and September before August Semana Grande crowds.

🛡️ Safety

Córdoba85/100Safety Score85/100San Sebastián

Córdoba

Córdoba is one of the safer cities in Spain — small (320,000 population), low violent-crime rate, and the historic centre is well policed and well lit. The main risks are pickpockets in the Mezquita queue and cathedral interior, the genuine summer heat (which is dangerous for the unprepared and the elderly), and the standard taxi-overcharging issues at the train station. Solo female travellers consistently report Córdoba as comfortable.

San Sebastián

San Sebastián is one of the safest cities in Spain. Violent crime is very rare, and the city has a relaxed, walkable atmosphere even late at night. The main risks are minor — petty theft in crowded pintxos bars and ocean safety at the surf beach.

🌤️ Weather

Córdoba

Córdoba has the most extreme summer climate of any major European city — a continental Mediterranean pattern with very hot dry summers and mild wet winters. July–August daytime highs regularly reach 42–46°C (107–115°F); the city has set the all-time Spanish heat record. Spring and autumn are extraordinary; winter is mild and the only time when an inland Andalucía city is comfortably visitable mid-day. Annual rainfall ~530mm, almost all between October and April.

Spring (March - May)8 to 28°C
Summer (June - September)17 to 42°C
Autumn (September - November)8 to 30°C
Winter (December - February)4 to 15°C

San Sebastián

San Sebastián has an oceanic climate — milder and wetter than the Mediterranean coast. Summers are warm but rarely scorching, winters are cool but mild. Rain is frequent year-round, especially in autumn and spring. The Basque coast is greener than southern Spain for a reason.

Spring (March - May)9-18°C
Summer (June - August)15-25°C
Autumn (September - November)10-21°C
Winter (December - February)5-12°C

🚇 Getting Around

Córdoba

Córdoba's historic centre is small (1km × 700m, walkable end-to-end in 25 minutes) and densely packed — virtually all attractions are within walking distance once you're in the Casco Histórico. The 8km trip to Medina Azahara is the only longer journey most travellers make. The city bus network covers the modern outskirts but is rarely needed; the AVE high-speed train station is a 15-minute walk from the cathedral. Bolt and Cabify operate; Uber has fewer drivers.

Walkability: Córdoba's historic centre is one of the most walkable in Spain — flat, dense, and the major sights are clustered within 10 minutes' walk of the Mezquita. The summer heat is the only obstacle; even in May, the 14:00–18:00 hours are genuinely unpleasant for walking and the city eats lunch indoors. Comfortable shoes recommended; cobbles get slippery in rare rain.

San Sebastián

San Sebastián is wonderfully compact and best explored on foot. The entire city from Monte Igueldo to Zurriola beach is walkable within 40 minutes. Local buses cover the wider metropolitan area, and the historic funicular climbs Monte Igueldo.

Walkability: San Sebastián is one of Spain's most walkable cities. The entire center — from the old town to Gros, La Concha to Monte Urgull — is flat and pedestrian-friendly. The elegant waterfront promenade is a joy to walk day or night. Only Monte Igueldo requires a climb (or funicular).
